Ticks parasitizing humans in Georgia and South Carolina.

From 1990 through 1995, 913 ticks removed from 460 human patients in Georgia or South Carolina were identified and recorded. The majority of these specimens (758, 83.0%) were lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum. One hundred and four (11.4%) American dog ticks Dermacentor variabilis, 36 (3.9%) blacklegged ticks Ixodes scapularis, 9 (1.0%) Gulf coast ticks Amblyomma maculatum, and 6 (0.7%) brown dog ticks Rhipicephalus sanguineus were also recovered. All active stages (larvae, nymphs, and adults) of A. americanum were represented, whereas nymphs and adults of D. variabilis and I. scapularis an

Multifocal neuropathy and vocal cord paralysis in relapsing fever.

A 19-year-old soldier developed multifocal neuropathy following an infection with tick-borne Borrelia. He suffered from involvement of the right accessory nerve, the right brachial plexus and the left recurrent laryngeal nerve. As was expected, all these complications were reversible. In contrast to louse-borne relapsing fever, neurological manifestations in the tick-borne variants are not common. To the best of our knowledge, vocal cord paralysis has never been described before.

What tick-borne encephalitis may look like: clinical signs and symptoms.

Tick-borne encephalitis is a zoonosis, endemic in a vast area of Europe and Asia. Clinical spectrum of the disease ranges from mild meningitis to severe meningoencephalitis with or without paralysis. Rare clinical manifestations are an abortive form of the disease and a chronic progressive form. A post-encephalitic syndrome, causing long-lasting morbidity that often affects the quality of life and sometimes also forces the individual to a change in lifestyle, develops in 35-58% of patients after acute tick-borne encephalitis. Clinical course and outcome vary by subtype of tick-borne encephalit

Tick toxicity in cats caused by Ixodes species in Australia: a review of published literature.

Tick toxicity in cats caused by Ixodes holocyclus and related species is a common medical condition on the east coast of Australia. Intoxication typically causes a flaccid ascending neuromuscular paralysis and clinical signs can include anxiety, dysphonia, hind limb weakness and/or ataxia, pupillary dilation, respiratory signs and possible bladder voiding dysfunction. Diagnosis is made with a combination of appropriate clinical signs and visualisation of tick(s) on a thorough body search. Cases are classified clinically using a scoring system, which grades neuromuscular weakness and respirator

[Incidence of Borrelia burgdorferi infection in isolated facial paralysis. A prospective study].

Between the causes of facial paralysis, similar to Bell's palsy, recently are included those due to some families of spirochaeta (Borrelia burgdorferi) transmitted through tick-bite. These bacteria, besides de facial palsy, may produce several degrees of lymphocytic meningitis and subsequently the paralysis of the face, sometimes clumsy or recurrent. The treatment being the antibiotic drugs, never the corticoids. In the paper are explained prospectively the incidence of this disease in the AA's environment.

Efficacy of combination products containing sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel (Simparica Trio™) or afoxolaner and milbemycin (NexGard Spectra®) against induced infestations of Ixodes holocyclus in dogs.

BACKGROUND: The Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, causes tick paralysis in dogs and cats in the eastern coastal regions of Australia. Prevention is the best option to protect dogs against this potentially fatal disease and sarolaner provides rapid and sustained efficacy against I. holocyclus. In this laboratory study, the efficacy of two combination endectocides containing sarolaner + moxidectin + pyrantel (Simparica Trio™) and afoxolaner + milbemycin (NexGard Spectra®) was evaluated against an artificial infestation of I. holocyclus. METHODS: Twenty-four (n =24) foxhounds were ra

The California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is the largest North American land bird and an endangered species. In September 2024, the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge reported a heavy soft tick infestation on three juvenile condors that were to be released to the wild. One was transported to Los Angeles Zoo for treatment because it showed clinical signs associated with tick paralysis, a neurotoxin-mediated paralytic syndrome. The others had slight weight loss and extensive scabbing in the areas that had previous tick burdens. Eight ticks found on perches in the flight pen were identif

The Lyme Disease Vaccine Paradox.

Lyme disease causes a significant financial and health burden. Recent advances in developing new Lyme disease vaccines have renewed optimism that vaccination may serve as an additional strategy to reduce this burden. Vaccination alone will not address the broader relevant public health challenges posed by ticks. Our experience with prior Lyme disease vaccines suggests that even an effective vaccine would not fully reduce the incidence of human disease. Importantly, vaccination against Borrelia genospecies would not affect tick abundance or exposure risk. It would also not mitigate the transmis

Dual infection of Ixodes ricinus ticks with two viruses of the tick-borne encephalitis complex.

Ixodes ricinus female ticks were inoculated with Skalica (SK) virus (non-pathogenic for adult albino mice by subcutaneous route) and 14 days later they were challenged with strain 198 of Tick-borne Encephalitis (TBE) virus (highly pathogenic for adult albino mice by subcutaneous route). After additional 14 days of incubation, 42.9 to 65.0% of the adult (10-12 g) albino mice infested with these double infected ticks developed antibodies to TBE without signs of sickness (transmission of SK virus), while paralysis or death was registered in 35.0 to 57.1% of infested mice (transmission of strain 1

Biodiversity, prevalence, and risk factors associated with tick infestation of Indigenous Nigerian breed of hunting dogs in Kwara State, Nigeria.

Ticks are hematophagous arthropods that cause paralysis, toxicosis, and more importantly, they harbor and transmit different pathogens affecting humans and animals. This study was aimed to investigate the species composition, richness, diversity indices, prevalence, and risk factors associated with tick infestation of indigenous Nigerian breed of hunting dogs in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study was conducted on 240 hunting dogs from six local government areas in Kwara State. The dogs were subjected to integumentary examinations and the collected ticks were collected in 70% ethanol and transport

Studies on the ability of different strains or populations of female Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (Acarina:Ixodidae) to produce paralysis in sheep.

Simultaneous infestation of 3-6 month-old Black-head sheep with 15 South African wild strains of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi males and females as well as a strain from Rwanda clearly showed that all strains are capable of inducing paralysis. Assessment of the infestation-rate of engorging female ticks during the period that their mass ranged between 15 and 21 mg/kg sheep body mass indicated that toxicity is quantitatively identical and exhibits no intraspecific gradations. The period between the beginning of infestation to the manifestation of the first clinical symptoms is, however, strain

The 'teabag method': tick feeding protocol and the effects of tick feeding on hematological parameters in the canine host.

BACKGROUND: Hard tick infestation occurs naturally in humans, domestic animals, and livestock species. Upon feeding, ticks transmit a wide variety of pathogens that may result in serious diseases with severe public health and economic impacts. While tick-borne diseases significantly impact human and animal health and agricultural production worldwide, as ectoparasites, ticks can also cause serious tissue injury, tick paralysis, or exsanguination from mass infestation. Experimental tick feeding is necessary to study tick-borne diseases and effectively test novel vaccines and therapeutics. Such

[Tick-bite meningoradiculitis (author's transl)].

Meningoradiculitis due to tick-bite is rare and poorly documented. Its etiology remains hypothetical, but is thought to be caused by a viral infection carried by the tick. It is characterized by a striking clinical picture, especially symptoms of a subjective nature. The involved area extends asymmetrically from the site of the bite with variable latency. The CSF is characteristic, showing definite lymphocytosis and a moderate protein reaction. The prognosis is excellent although recovery may take several months. In the event of facial paralysis, there is a risk of postparalytic spasms. Treatm

Nonpolio causes of polio-like paralytic syndromes.

In a study of patients with suspected poliomyelitis, but from whom poliovirus was not isolated, a variety of causes of the paralysis was found. Injury of the spinal column sometimes followed by periostitis or osteomyelitis was relatively common. Exotic causes included paralysis due to snake bite, spider bite, scorpion sting, and tick bite and schistosomiasis involving the spinal cord. Chemical poisons, such as arsenic, triorthocresyl phosphate, and organophosphorus insecticides, were responsible for paralysis affecting groups of people. Paralysis in individual patients with porphyria followed

Are ticks venomous animals?

INTRODUCTION: As an ecological adaptation venoms have evolved independently in several species of Metazoa. As haematophagous arthropods ticks are mainly considered as ectoparasites due to directly feeding on the skin of animal hosts. Ticks are of major importance since they serve as vectors for several diseases affecting humans and livestock animals. Ticks are rarely considered as venomous animals despite that tick saliva contains several protein families present in venomous taxa and that many Ixodida genera can induce paralysis and other types of toxicoses. Tick saliva was previously proposed
