Use test with l-carvone in toothpaste on sensitized individuals.

BACKGROUND: The mint flavour carvone (l-carvone) is considered a weak contact allergen. However, contact allergy to carvone is more prevalent in patients with oral lichen planus or oral lichenoid lesions (OLP/OLL). OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate how carvone affects sensitized individuals through a use test with toothpaste containing carvone. Non-flavoured toothpaste served as control. METHODS: Subjects were patch tested prior to the use test-14 subjects allergic to carvone (11 with OLP/OLL), 20 subjects with OLP/OLL and 3 healthy controls. The month-long use test comprised of using to

Green dentistry: Organic toothpaste formulations. A literature review.

Dentistry as a profession should take into account the goals of sustainable development in daily practice and encourage the transition to a green economy. Consumers are becoming more conscious about the impact of self-care products, including toothpastes, on the environment. Organic toothpastes are considered very safe. A broad literature review was conducted to: (i) identify the ingredients in available organic toothpastes; (ii) classify them into active and inactive; and (iii) evaluate each ingredient's purpose and the adverse events that may be associated with its use. A comprehensive list

Follicular mucinosis with novel dermoscopic finding: the toothpaste sign.

We describe a case of follicular mucinosis presenting with patchy alopecia affecting the eyebrows. On dermoscopy, white gelatinous material (presumed to be mucin) was visible along the hair shafts of the eyebrow lesions. We propose to call this novel dermoscopic finding the 'toothpaste sign'.

Skeletal fluorosis due to excessive tea and toothpaste consumption.

We describe the case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with a metatarsal fracture and was found to have a bone mineral density (BMD) T-score of +11 in the lumbar spine and +7.6 in the hip. Subsequent investigation revealed very high serum, urine and tissue fluoride levels, associated with excessive tea and toothpaste consumption. The case emphasises the need to exclude fluorosis in individuals with unexpectedly high BMD levels.

Is there a role for triclosan/copolymer toothpaste in the management of periodontal disease?

Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common oral conditions experienced by adults today. The treatment of these diseases by the dental team can only be performed when patients attend dental practices. There is recognition that the preventive measures patients perform at home between dental visits is of vital importance in the control of these diseases. Water fluoridation and fluoridated toothpastes have made enormous progress into the prevention of dental caries worldwide. However, prevention of periodontal disease is yet to enjoy the same success. A number of toothpastes have be

Oral malodor reduction from a zinc-containing toothpaste.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the anti-malodor efficacy of toothpaste containing 0.2% zinc sulphate after a single brushing and following extended use. METHODS: Two clinical studies of common design but different malodor assessment were carried out. In the first study, volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) were measured with a Halimeter; in the second, breath freshness was assessed by odor judges (organoleptic score). At the start of the study, suitable subjects were assigned at random to either the test toothpaste (containing 0.2% zinc sulphate) or the placebo toothpaste (no zinc), and oral breath asses

An unusual presentation of oropharyngeal mucosal plasmacytosis related to toothpaste.

OBJECTIVE: We present the case of a 59-year-old Chinese patient with an unusual presentation of mucosal plasmacytosis involving the oropharynx, related to the use of toothpaste. METHOD: Case presentation and review of English medical literature involving mucosal plasmacytosis. RESULTS: Mucosal plasmacytosis is an uncommon disease process and has been associated with hypersensitivity reactions. Most cases involve the gingival mucosa, although there have been reports of cases involving other oral mucosal sites and the upper aerodigestive tract. Our case provides an example of oropharyngeal pla

Fluorosis risk from early exposure to fluoride toothpaste.

UNLABELLED: Swallowed fluoride toothpaste in the early years of life has been postulated to be a risk factor for fluorosis, but the epidemiological evidence is weakened by the fact that most of the relevant studies were done in developed countries where an individual is exposed to multiple sources of fluoride. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the risk of fluorosis from fluoride toothpaste in a population whose only potential source of fluoride was fluoride toothpaste. METHODS: Case-control analyses were conducted to test the hypothesis that fluoride toothpaste use before the age of 6 years increased

Sensitivity to cinnamic aldehyde in a toothpaste. 2. Further studies.

The authors carried out further studies to assess the significance of the findings of patients sensitive to cinnamic aldehyde in a toothpaste. Selected groups of patients in whom sensitivity to this might have been overlooked were patch-tested. With the exception of three patients, two with cosmetic sensitivity and one with hand eczema, the results were negative. The frequency of use of the original toothpaste was assessed among patients attending the clinic and this was followed by a circular letter to general practitioners and dentists inviting referral of patients with oral symptoms. Caries-preventive effect of anti-erosive and nano-hydroxyapatite-containing toothpastes in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate the caries-preventive effect of newly developed fluoride and fluoride-free toothpastes specially designed for erosion prevention. The hypothesis was that these products might also show superior caries-inhibiting effect than regular fluoride toothpastes, since they were designed for stronger erosive acid challenges. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enamel specimens were obtained from bovine teeth and pre-demineralized (pH = 4.95/21 days) to create artificial caries lesions. Baseline mineral loss (ΔZB) and lesion depth (LDB) were determined using transv

Inhibitory effects of children's toothpastes on Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

AIM: As suppression of Streptococcus mutans in young children may prevent or delay colonisation of the oral cavity, toothbrushing with dentifrices containing anti-S. mutans activity may aid in preventing caries. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of children's dentifrices on the growth of S. mutans and non-mutans bacteria (Streptococcus sanguinis and Lactobacillus acidophilus). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The agar diffusion assay at neutral pH was used to examine the antibacterial activity of commercial dentifrices and their major constituents. RESULTS: Dentifrices containing 1,45

Fluoride toothpastes of different concentrations for preventing dental caries in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Caries (dental decay) is a disease of the hard tissues of the teeth caused by an imbalance, over time, in the interactions between cariogenic bacteria in dental plaque and fermentable carbohydrates (mainly sugars). The use of fluoride toothpaste is the primary intervention for the prevention of caries. OBJECTIVES: To determine the relative effectiveness of fluoride toothpastes of different concentrations in preventing dental caries in children and adolescents, and to examine the potentially modifying effects of baseline caries level and supervised toothbrushing.
