Comparison of techniques for detection of domestic infestations with Triatoma infestans in Brazil.

The detection of infestations of Triatominae in houses in regions endemic for Chagas's disease is a criterion frequently used in the selection of areas, or of individual houses, for treatment in insecticide campaigns as well as in the evaluation of insecticide performance. Several different methods for detecting domestic infestations with Triatominae were compared: night capture, capture of five bugs with the aid of a flushing-out agent and use of card boxes of the Gómez-Núñez type. The flushing-out and Gómez-Núñez box methods were found to be equally sensitive, although each failed to detect

Acute Chagas Disease Presenting as Preseptal Cellulitis.

Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite transmitted by hematophagous triatomine insects (subfamily Triatominae) belonging to the Reduviidae family, order Hemiptera. Infection occurs through contact with the feces of the infected vector at the site of its bite or on intact mucosa. [Pediatr Ann. 2023;52(10):e394-e397.].

Epidemiology of Chagas disease in Ecuador. A brief review.

Chagas disease is a complex public health problem that has been underestimated in Ecuador. Here we review the relevant published information, and present unpublished and new data that help to understand the current Chagas disease epidemiological situation and its evolution in the country. Three main characteristics have been identified: (i) persistence of Trypanosoma cruzi transmission in already known foci; (ii) a marked endemicity in some urban areas of Guayaquil; and (iii) the transformation of new Amazon foci into truly endemic areas. The situation in other suspect areas remains uncertain.

Triatomine Fauna and Natural Infection by Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) cruzi (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatidae) in the Caribbean Region of Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela: A Systematic Review.

Chagas disease (CD) is a zoonosis caused by the hemoflagellate Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted by insects of the subfamily Triatominae. Studies to identify the vectors involved in the transmission of T. cruzi have been conducted in the Caribbean regions of Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama. However, retrospective studies and comprehensive reviews covering these three countries are still lacking, limiting our understanding of this issue. This study used the PRISMA method to conduct a systematic review of studies on the triatomine fauna and its natural infection by T. cruzi in the Caribbea

Beyond blood: the flexibility of triatomine bug food search and recognition.

Kissing bugs are known for being skilled blood-feeders on warm-blooded hosts, using cues like carbon dioxide, infrared radiation, and skin odors to locate them. They depend on heat to direct their bites and use gustatory signals for feeding decisions. Recent evidence suggests that they also feed on cold-blooded animals and insects. This implies that they may respond to other sensory cues, such as slight temperature changes, vibrations, and/or odors, to trigger biting attempts. Besides, new studies reveal that triatomines can ingest plant or fruit fluids, showing a broader dietary flexibility t

[Comparison of methods for the capture of triatomines ( Hemiptera: Reduviidae ) in Attalea butyracea palms in the Eastern Plains of Colombia].

INTRODUCTION: Studying triatominae in their natural ecotopes has great significance in the epidemiology of Chagas disease. Gathering live insects and the establishment of insectaries allows countless studies. Therefore, effective methods are needed for capturing wild triatomines, especially intrusive species such as Rhodnius prolixus . OBJECTIVE: To compare four methods of capturing triatomines in palms to measure their effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study was conducted in Maní, department of Casanare, Colombia, with a predominance of A. butyracea . We compared four methodologies

Seasonality and Temperature-Dependent Flight Dispersal of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and Other Vectors of Chagas Disease in Western Argentina.

Flight dispersal of Triatominae is affected by climatic conditions and determines the spatiotemporal patterns of house invasion and transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae). We investigated the detailed time structure and temperature dependencies of flight occurrence of Triatoma infestans Klug (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and other triatomine species in a rural village of western Argentina by taking advantage of the attraction of adult triatomines to artificial light sources. Most of the village's streetlight posts were systematically inspected for triatomines twi

Protocol for in vivo tracking of lipoproteins in developing oocytes of multiple species of Chagas disease vectors using fluorescent probes.

In insects, the circulating lipoproteins vitellogenin and lipophorin function as yolk protein precursors during oogenesis. Here, we present a protocol for tracing vitellogenin and lipophorin pathways during egg development in three species of Chagas disease vectors (Triatominae, Hemiptera: Reduviidae). We describe steps for purifying and fluorescent labeling of lipoproteins, their injection into vitellogenic females, and analysis using confocal microscopy. This approach enables the fate of lipoprotein particles and their lipid cargo in ovarian tissues to be tracked at the subcellular level. Fo

The Body of Chagas Disease Vectors.

Morphometry is an effort to describe or measure the morphology of the body, or parts of it. It also provides quantitative data on the interactions of living organisms with their environment, external or internal. As a discipline, morphometrics has undergone significant developments in the last decade, making its implementation more visual and less laborious. Chagas disease vectors, often referred to by the common name of "kissing bugs", belong to the subfamily Triatominae. Due to their apparent morphological plasticity, they have been the subject of numerous morphometric studies. Most of these

Elimination of vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease.

The control of the vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease in Brazil was organized as a national program in 1975, when two large entomological and sero-epidemiological surveys were conducted in the country in order to identify areas at highest risk of transmission and to guide interventions regarding the chemical treatment of domestic vectors of the disease. The authors present the baseline data gathered through these studies and compare them with more recent data. The evaluation performed shows that the transmission by Triatoma infestans is virtually interrupted and that the transmission

Cutaneous Reactions to Triatomine (Kissing Bug) Bites and the Risk for Chagas Disease.

Triatomine bugs are widely distributed globally and are important vectors of trypanosomiasis in the New World. The Romaña sign, characterized by unilateral swelling of the eyelid, is common in triatomine and bedbug bites. The range of Trypanosoma cruzi, the cause of Chagas disease has expanded with the organism detected in triatomine reduviids in suburban areas of the southwestern United States.

A new genus and species of a terrestrial cavernicolan planarian from Barro Colorado Island, Panama (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Cavernicola).

The paper provides a taxonomic description of a new genus and species of terrestrial cavernicolan triclad flatworm from Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Molecular sequences of this species were already deposited in GenBank several years ago under the provisional taxon name Cavernicola sp. Animals have the following characteristics: absence of pigmentation and eyes; mouth opening located halfway in the pharyngeal cavity; few, ventral testes extending from a position far posterior to the ovaries to directly behind the pharyngeal cavity; strongly recurving sperm ducts, thus forming a loop; horizont

After the systematization and re-dimension of the vectorial control in all the Country by 1975, it was considered necessary to have an up-to-date information on the distribution of vectors in Brazil, and differentiate precisely the role of each of the different species on the intra-domiciliary transmission of Chagas disease. For this purpose, sampling regional surveys for regions with non reliable information were performed, as well as, a house by house search for vectors on those areas considered at risk. For this last, 1,942 municipalities from 19 states were searched, as by the political di

Current situation of Chagas disease in Central America.

Chagas disease in Central America is known since 1913 when the first human case was reported in El Salvador. The other Central American countries reported their first cases between 1933 and 1967. On October 1997 was launched the Central American Initiative for Chagas Disease Control (IPCA). The objectives of this sub-regional Initiative are: (1) the elimination of Rhodnius prolixus in Central America; (2) the reduction of the domiciliary infestation of Triatoma dimidiata; and (3) the elimination of the transfusion transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi. Significant advancements being close to the e

Predicting triatoma dimidiata abundance and infection rate: a risk map for natural transmission of chagas disease in the yucatan peninsula of Mexico.

Chagas disease, a major public health problem in Latin America, is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by hematophageous insects from the Triatominae subfamily. Control of this disease is based on domestic vector control with insecticides and improvements in housing. As with other vector-borne diseases, the identification of areas of high risk of disease transmission is a major prerequisite for the planning and implementation of cost-effective control programs. In this study, we explored the relationship between Triatoma dimidiata geographic distribution and bioc

Natural ecotopes of Triatoma infestans dark morph and other sylvatic triatomines in the Bolivian Chaco.

A survey of natural ecotopes of Triatoma infestans dark morph and other triatomine sylvatic species was performed in an uninhabited area of the Bolivian Chaco. Among the 321 triatomines collected by light trapping, only 4 T. infestans dark morph specimens were identified. Predominant flying species were T. guasayana and T. sordida group 2 (51.7% and 37.1% of capture, respectively). The same species prevailed in terrestrial and epiphytic bromeliads where scarce T. infestans dark morph nymphal instars were also detected. In parrot nests T. delpontei prevailed broadly over other species (90.2% of

Rural Triatoma rubrovaria from southern Brazil harbors Trypanosoma cruzi of lineage IIc.

Triatoma infestans, the main vector of Chagas disease, has nearly been eliminated from Brazil. Nevertheless, other triatominae species are involved in the domiciliation process, including Triatoma rubrovaria in Rio Grande do Sul State (RS). Previous studies showed that 1.6% of the T. rubrovaria specimens collected at the rural district of Quaraí, RS, were naturally infected by Trypanosoma cruzi. In this study, five T. cruzi isolates obtained from infected triatomines were characterized molecularly and biologically. Genotyping of the T. cruzi isolates showed that they belong to lineage IIc of T

An agent-based model for predicting the prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi I and II in their host and vector populations.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, an endemic human parasitosis in Latin America. This protozoan is transmitted to human and other mammals by blood-feeding bugs belonging to the Triatominae subfamily. There are two strains (T. cruzi I and T. cruzi II) presenting different biological and ecological characteristics. An original agent-based model (ABM) was designed for predicting the prevalence (i.e., proportion of infected individuals in the total population at a given time) of T. cruzi I and II during single and mixed infections. The ABM was calibrated from experimental
