Subcision versus 100% trichloroacetic acid in the treatment of rolling acne scars.

BACKGROUND: Acne scarring is common but surprisingly difficult to treat. Newer techniques and modifications to older ones may make this refractory problem more manageable. The 100% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) chemical reconstruction of skin scars (CROSS) method is a safe and effective single modality for the treatment of atrophic acne scars, whereas subcision appears to be a safe technique that provides significant improvement for rolling acne scars. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of the 100% TCA CROSS method with subcision in treating rolling acne scars. METHODS: Twenty patients of skin ty

The efficacy of 5% trichloroacetic acid cream in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic disease in Iran. Based on the results of our previous study, this study was designed as a pilot trial to evaluate the effect of 5% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) cream in the treatment of leishmaniasis lesions. METHODS: 16 patients with positive smear for leishmaniasis were randomly selected for treatment with 5% TCA cream, twice a day for 8 weeks or up to complete healing of the lesions. Scar size was measured 6 months after complete epithelization of the lesions. RESULTS: Mean area of the lesions was 38.81+ 81.9 mm(2) before treatment an

Role of trichloroacetic acid in treating posterior conjunctival cyst in an anopthalmic socket.

Orbital cysts in anophthalmic socket are infrequent. Most of the cysts reported are anterior and the inability to retain a formerly well-fitted prosthesis is the most common symptom. We present a posterior conjunctival cyst developed after a dermo-fat graft reconstruction in an eviscerated socket. Eleven years after evisceration surgery due to irreparable ocular trauma an extrusion of the orbital implant occurred. Removal of the orbital implant and a socket reconstruction with dermis fat graft was done. Three years later, the patient again returned back to the treating ophthalmologist with com

Uptake, translocation and fate of trichloroacetic acid in a Norway spruce/soil system.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a secondary atmospheric pollutant formed by photooxidation of chlorinated solvents in the troposphere--it has, however, recently been ranked among natural organohalogens. Its herbicidal properties might be one of the factors adversely affecting forest health. TCA accumulates rapidly in conifer needles and influences the detoxification capacity in the trees. The aim of the investigations--a survey of which is briefly given here--was to elucidate the uptake, distribution and fate of TCA in Norway spruce. For this purpose young nursery-grown plants of Norway spruce (

Trichloroacetic acid model to accurately capture the efficacy of treatments for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) occurs following cutaneous injury and is common following resolution of acne especially in patients with skin of color. The objective of this study was to further validate a trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-induced PIH model and compare it to acne-induced PIH using topical bakuchiol, a botanical extract that has been shown to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiacne properties. A prospective, non-randomized clinical trial was conducted on subjects with skin phototypes IV-VI with a history of acne-induced PIH. Subjects applied bakuchiol

Use of trichloroacetic acid for management of oral lesions caused by human papillomavirus.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) has an affinity for squamous cells of stratified keratinized epithelium, thus affecting the lower genital, nasal, and oral tracts. In the oral cavity, HPV is associated with pathoses such as the verruca vulgaris (common wart), squamous cell papilloma, condyloma acuminatum (venereal wart), and focal epithelial hyperplasia (Heck disease). Among the treatments available for these lesions are cryotherapy, electrosurgery, surgical removal, laser therapy, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). The objective of this research was to determine the behavior of HPV-associated oral

Development of a trichloroacetic acid precipitation assay for covalent adducts of thymidylate synthase.

The use of trichloroacetic acid as a protein precipitant and denaturant in the quantitative measurement of covalent complexes of thymidylate synthase is described. Enzyme inactivated with N[3H]ethylmaleimide and inhibitory ternary complex (formed with native enzyme, 5-[6-3H]fluoro-2'-deoxyuridylate, and methylenetetrahydrofolate) served as reagents which were used to establish the conditions under which trichloroacetic acid precipitation, washing, and solubilization steps provided quantitative results. The ternary complex formed by dihydrofolate reductase with [3H]methotrexate and NADPH was us

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitability of 125I in the blood of mice fed 125I.

A recent study showed that after feeding 125I-labelled proteins or free 125I to mice, as much as 40% of total radioactivity in the circulation precipitated upon mixing whole blood with 10% trichloroacetic acid. We examined this potential limitation to the use of radiolabelled tracers for studies on intestinal digestion of proteins and protein uptake, and identified its mechanism. BALB/c mice were gavage-fed or injected intravenously (i.v.) with Na125I. Blood obtained at 15 min was added directly to 10% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or was processed to obtain serum or plasma. On mixing with 10% TC

Effect of dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid on DNA methylation in liver and tumors of female B6C3F1 mice.

Dichloroacetic acid (DCA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) are found in drinking water and are metabolites of trichloroethylene. They are carcinogenic and promote liver tumors in B6C3F1 mice. Hypomethylation of DNA is a proposed nongenotoxic mechanism involved in carcinogenesis and tumor promotion. We determined the effect of DCA and TCA on the level of DNA methylation in mouse liver and tumors. Female B6C3F1 mice 15 days of age were administered 25 mg/kg N-methyl-N-nitrosourea and at 6 weeks started to receive 25 mmol/liter of either DCA or TCA in their drinking water until euthanized 44 weeks
