Chronic cholecystitis: Diagnostic and therapeutic insights from formerly bile-farmed Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus).

Across Southeast Asia and China, more than 17000 Asian bears are kept under suboptimal conditions and farmed for their bile to meet the consumer demand for traditional medicine products. Years of unsterile and repetitive bile extraction contribute to the development of chronic sterile or bacterial cholecystitis, a pathology commonly diagnosed in formerly bile-farmed bears. In both human and veterinary medicine, the diagnostic value of the macroscopic bile examination for assessing gallbladder disease is unclear. The objective of this study is to identify the role of gallbladder bile color, vis

The emergence and expansion of sarcoptic mange in American black bears (Ursus americanus) in the United States.

Mange was historically rare in American black bears (Ursus americanus). Since the 1990s, however, sarcoptic mange has become more widespread in black bears with hundreds of reports in 2018 from eight states. This emerging disease has potential implications regarding human and animal health and on future black bear management.

Trichinella Surveillance in Black Bears ( Ursus americanus ) from the Dehcho Region, Northwest Territories, Canada, 2002-15.

We used muscle digestion to test black bears ( Ursus americanus ) from the southwestern Northwest Territories, Canada, for Trichinella. Results showed a prevalence of 4.1%. Some bears had infection intensities of more than one larva per gram of muscle tissue; this level in meat is considered to pose a human consumption safety risk.

Fatal disseminated blastomycosis in a free-ranging American black bear (Ursus americanus).

An aged, free-ranging, female, radio-collared American black bear (Ursus americanus) died after an approximately 5 month long period of weight loss. Gross necropsy findings included severe diffuse pyogranulomatous bronchopneumonia, marked granulomatous lymphadenitis of tracheobronchial lymph nodes and multiple intra-abdominal lymph nodes, chronic focal jejunal ulceration, and widespread alopecia. Histopathologic examination revealed abundant fungal organisms morphologically compatible with Blastomyces sp. within pyogranulomatous inflammatory lesions in the lungs, multiple lymph nodes, liver, k

Trichinellosis acquired in Nunavut, Canada in September 2009: meat from grizzly bear suspected.

Five cases of trichinellosis with onset of symptoms in September 2009, were reported in France, and were probably linked to the consumption of meat from a grizzly bear in Cambridge Bay in Nunavut, Canada. Travellers should be aware of the risks of eating raw or rare meat products in arctic regions, particularly game meat such as bear or walrus meat.

Estrus monitoring in giant pandas revisited: The importance of assay selection.

Accurate and early prediction of ovulation is critical in captive breeding of giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) as both natural mating and the use of artificial insemination require major logistical preparations, and the narrow fertile window limits breeding opportunities. Estrus monitoring traditionally relies on parallel measurement of urinary estrogens and progestogens to identify the estrogen-progestogen cross-over point, which marks the onset of the follicular phase 1-2 weeks before ovulation. To increase this window as much as possible, this study aimed to investigate whether differe

Unique occurrence of trichilemmal carcinoma in the scrotal skin of a giant panda: a pathological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Trichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is a rare cutaneous appendage malignancy with scarce human cases and very few animal cases have been documented in the available literature, especially in giant pandas. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male captive giant panda had 4-week scrotal hyperplasia and ulceration, with a 4.5 cm×4 cm irregular lesion and neutrophils were elevated. Pathology revealed dermal lobular/cord-like invasive atypical clear cells, squamous nests and outer root sheath cysts. PAS staining was positive. Immunohistochemistry showed Her-2 (+), CK5/6 (++), p63 (++), Ki-67 (+),

Trichinellosis after Raw Bear Eyeball Consumption.

Trichinellosis, a zoonotic parasitic disease, is usually transmitted through raw or undercooked muscle tissue. We report a 25-year-old hunter from Hokkaido, Japan, who acquired trichinellosis by consuming a raw bear eyeball, a tissue previously presumed to be parasite-free. He developed fatigue and rash within 3 days, followed by fever and myalgia 9 days after consumption. Serology confirmed trichinellosis, and treatment with albendazole led to full recovery. Among five hunters who consumed meat from the same bear, only the two who ate raw eyeballs developed the disease, whereas those who ate

ANESTHESIA IN CAPTIVE GIANT PANDAS (AILUROPODA MELANOLEUCA) WITH MEDETOMIDINE-KETAMINE.

One male and one female giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) from a Belgian zoo were anesthetized on eight different occasions over a course of 4 yr for electro-ejaculation (n = 3) or artificial insemination (n = 5). Medetomidine (0.03-0.04 mg/kg) and ketamine (2.5-3 mg/kg) were administered by intramuscular remote injection. Animals gained sternal recumbency with the loss of response to external stimuli after 4.9 ± 1.6 min (mean ± SD). The trachea was intubated with a 14-mm-internal diameter endotracheal tube; anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in oxygen adjusted according to the requi

Case study: Modifying repetitive behavior in a polar bear (Ursus maritimus).

Stereotypic pacing in zoo-housed carnivores has been intensively researched for decades, revealing that it is a subtly complex behavior with a highly variable etiology. While pacing can be an indicator of poor welfare, it can also be anticipatory in nature, or even have a completely different motivating operation. In this case study, the pacing of a zoo-housed polar bear, "Tundra," was maintained through inadvertent reinforcement. Baseline data revealed that in 86% of afternoon observations, Tundra paced when the door to shift him off-exhibit was opened. Upon changing the contingencies of rein

Seroprevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in Free-Ranging Black Bears (Ursus americanus) in Eastern North Carolina, USA.

Recent sarcoptic mange epizootics have affected free-ranging black bears (Ursus americanus) in the northeastern US, but not in North Carolina. To determine whether black bears in eastern North Carolina have exposure to Sarcoptes scabiei, serum samples from hunter-harvested black bears (n=45) were collected and evaluated for antibodies using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay previously validated in black bears. No dermal lesions consistent with sarcoptic mange were identified in the sampled bears. The seroprevalence among these asymptomatic bears was 18%, with no significant differ

Comparative review of the distribution and burden of contaminants in the body of polar bears.

Historical (or legacy) contaminants, such as metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs; e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls) have been measured in circumpolar subpopulations of polar bears, especially from Hudson Bay, East Greenland, and Svalbard, but substantially less is currently known about new and/or emerging contaminants such as polychlorinated naphthalenes, current-use pesticides, organotins, and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is an apex Arctic predator that accumulates high levels of bioaccumulative POPs and mercury (Hg), but there is currently

Potential Mechanism of Detoxification of Cyanide Compounds by Gut Microbiomes of Bamboo-Eating Pandas.

Gut microbes can enhance the ability of hosts to consume secondary plant compounds and, therefore, expand the dietary niche breadth of mammalian herbivores. The giant and red pandas are bamboo-eating specialists within the mammalian order Carnivora. Bamboo contains abundant plant secondary metabolites (e.g., cyanide-containing compounds). However, Carnivora species, including the giant panda, have deficient levels of rhodanese (one of the essential cyanide detoxification enzymes) in their tissues compared with the same tissues of herbivores. Here, we make a comparative analysis of 94 gut metag
