Journal of refractive surgery (Thorofare, N.J. : 1995)1996eng
BACKGROUND: We previously described a simple test which evaluates image degradation in post-excimer laser (PRK) patients under scotopic conditions. After refractive surgery, corneal haze, ablation zone decentration, ablation zone/pupillary diameter disparity, and under-correction each result in a characteristic pattern on the Night Vision Recording Chart.
METHODS: Using the same method, further studies evaluated night vision image degradation in 118 un-operated emmetropic, myopic, hyperopic, and astigmatic eyes and in 26 contact lens wearers.
RESULTS: Scotopic image degradation increases wit

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sex-based disparities in vision impairment are a major global health concern. This study quantifies these disparities across major blinding diseases and assesses their association with national-level gender inequality.
METHODS: In this repeated ecological analysis of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 data, we analysed sex-disaggregated age-standardised years lived with disability (YLD) rates and prevalence for major blinding diseases. Temporal trends were assessed using average annual per cent change (AAPC). Linear regression examined associations between sex differences an

AIM: Fixation disparity (FD) is a sensitive marker of binocular vision stress and is often assessed in patients with asthenopia. Working distance alters accommodative and vergence demands. However, its effect on FD under routine clinical settings is not well established.
PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of working distance on FD measured using the Wesson fixation disparity card (WFDC) at 25 cm and 40 cm in symptomatic young adults, and to explore associations with selected binocular vision and accommodative measures.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 25 symptomatic particip

While continuous monocular deprivation (MD) of patterned vision causes severe loss of visual cortical responses and visual acuity in the affected eye, these effects can be avoided by providing brief daily periods of binocular exposure [BE; D.E. Mitchell et al. (2003) Curr. Biol., 8, 1179-1182; D.E. Mitchell et al. (2006) Eur. J. Neurosci., 23, 2458-2466; D.S. Schwarzkopf et al. (2007) Eur. J. Neurosci., 25, 270-280]. Clinical relevance: Several parameters are likely to affect the magnitude of fixation disparity (FD) and FD curve characteristics. Presence of a central fusion lock may have an important effect on clinical testing of FD and interpretation of its results. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate FD curve parameters using the modified near Mallett unit (with a central fusion lock) and the Sheedy disparometer (without a central fusion lock) in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 147 patients with a mean age of 22.5 years who presented

PURPOSE: To study the pattern of facilitatory and suppressive binocular interactions in stereodeficient patients with strabismus and in healthy controls.
METHODS: Visual evoked potentials were recorded in response to a Vernier onset/offset pattern presented to one eye, either monocularly or paired dichoptically with a straight vertical square-wave grating, which, when fused with the target in the other eye, gave rise to a percept of a series of bands appearing in depth from an otherwise uniform plane or with a grating that contained offsets that produced a standing disparity and the appearanc

The perception of a binocular rivalry (BR) stimulus can be influenced by other stimuli in temporal or spatial proximity. Here, we investigate how spatial (surround inhibition [SI]) and temporal context (flash suppression [FS]) interact. Previously, we modulated these influences by varying surround contrast in SI and timing parameters in FS. In the present study, we make use of the fact that the strengths of the two contexts can also be manipulated in the same way, namely by modulating ocularity. We varied FS strength by showing the prime to the same eye as the identical probe or to the other e

Binocular rivalry (BR) is an intriguing phenomenon that occurs when two different images are presented, one to each eye, resulting in alternation or rivalry between the percepts. The phenomenon has been studied for nearly 200 years, with renewed and intensive investigation over recent decades. The rate of perceptual switching has long been known to vary widely between individuals but to be relatively stable within individuals. A recent twin study demonstrated that individual variation in BR rate is under substantial genetic control, a finding that also represented the first report, using a lar

The influence of measuring heterophoria on a subsequent associated phoria measurement was investigated in 50 subjects. After refraction, heterophoria was measured by either von Graefe's technique or Maddox rod and wing. The effect of these procedures was assessed by associated phoria measurements taken before and after the dissociated measures. It is shown that subjects with a history of unstable binocular vision are likely to have an associate phoria induced or changed by the previous dissociated phoria measurement, particularly if von Graefe's technique is employed. It is recommended that, e

Vergence adaptation is an important element of comfortable binocular single vision and probably contributes to the high incidence of orthophoria or small angles of heterophoria in the normal population. Where binocular single vision has been absent for a period of time, restoration of good visual acuity appears to enable the vergence adaptation mechanism to become active again. A case is presented in which a moderate to large angle of deviation rapidly 'disappeared' once good visual acuity was restored and the disparate images could be fused. Known factors concerning vergence adaptation are di

In the subjective measurement of fixation disparity (FD), the subject fuses contours presented in the peripheral macular areas of both eyes (fusion lock). The position of the eyes relative to each other is monitored by means of two haploscopically seen vertical lines presented in the central macular area, one above and one below a binocularly seen horizontal line. The subject is instructed to shift one of the vertical lines horizontally until the two are aligned, while fixating their intersection with the horizontal line. It has recently been questioned whether the foveolae really are pointed

Stereoscopic systems present binocular images on planar surface at a fixed distance. They induce cues to flatness, indicating that images are presented on a unique surface and specifying the relative depth of that surface. The center of interest of this study is on a second problem, arising when a 3D object distance differs from the display distance. As binocular disparity must be scaled using an estimate of viewing distance, object depth can thus be affected through disparity scaling. Two previous experiments revealed that stereoscopic displays can affect depth perception due to conflicting a

The synoptophore was used to measure torsional interocular disparity. This, in turn, was used to compute how much the angle between the Listing's plane (LP) of the two eyes changes as a function of the vergence angle. The ratio of these two angles was defined as G. We measured G in normals and in patients suffering from intermittent horizontal strabismus. Consistent with previous search-coil experiments and with our previous visual test measures, the results using the synoptophore suggest that, for normals, G is less than 1. In the patient group the mean G was similar in magnitude but more var

After presenting the components of this electronic eikonometer (device schematic and organizational chart) for the analysis and measurement of perceptive effects of binocular disparity, we review the specifics (tests with incorporated magnifications seen in polarized light) and the advantages of this device as compared to existing eikonometers (absence of any intermediary optical system). We provide a list of available tests in the test library and their parametric characteristics: Ogle Spatial Test for Aniseikonia, Fixation Disparity Test: binocular nonius, and Linear and Random stereoscopic

A literature review reveals old references to an association between migraine headache and binocular vision anomalies, but a lack of scientific evidence evaluating these claims. In a masked case control study, we investigated binocular vision using standard clinical tests in people with migraine and in controls. Some test results suggest that heterophoria and fixation disparity are more common in the migraine group. The migraine group also had slightly reduced stereopsis. We found significant correlations between some migraine variables and some binocular vision variables (e.g., duration of wo

PURPOSE: The maximum binocular vertical disparity that can be fused with disparity vergence (vertical-fusion amplitude or VFA), varies with convergence angle. VFA is larger for convergence responses to near than to far viewing distances; however, the clinical norms for changes in VFA with convergence have not been established. VFA at several convergence angles was measured to obtain a quantitative description of the changes in VFA with convergence.
METHODS: Fifty-six adults took part in the study. Horizontal and vertical disparity stimuli were presented on a computer monitor by using the red-

Disparity matching in stereo vision is often limited by feature information, especially when dealing with textureless scenes. To address this challenge, we propose a polarization-vector-guided stereo matching framework. By exploiting the strong correlation between the polarization properties of the reflected light field and the geometric features of object surfaces, a matching model based on minimizing the inner product of polarization normal vectors is established to solve stereo matching problems for weak-texture and textureless scenes. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that th

This study sought to test the hypothesis that significant differences would be observed in clinical measures, symptoms, and objective assessments of vergence eye movements between children with typically developing convergence insufficiency (TYP-CI) and children with persistent post-concussion symptoms with convergence insufficiency (PPCS-CI). Data from age-matched binocularly normal controls (BNC) were used for comparison. Data from three groups of children 11 to 17 years of age are presented: BNC (N = 11), TYP-CI (N = 10), and PPCS-CI (N = 15). Clinical measures of vergence, accommodation, a

Particularly promising studies on visual awareness exploit a generally used perceptual bistability phenomenon, "binocular rivalry"--in which the two eyes' images alternately dominate--because it can dissociate the visual input from the perceptual output. To successfully study awareness, it is crucial to know the extent to which eye movements alter the input. Although there is convincing evidence that perceptual alternations can occur without eye movements, the literature on their exact role is mixed. Moreover, recent work has demonstrated that eye movements, first, correlate positively with pe

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that crossed disparities give better stereoacuity than uncrossed. When near phoria is considered, exophores had a better crossed stereoacuity and esophores had a better uncrossed stereoacuity. The current study investigated the effect of heterophoria on distant crossed and uncrossed stereoacuity.
METHODS: Seventy-two subjects were recruited and their distant heterophoria measured. Heterophoria within two prism dioptres was considered as orthophoric. Esophoric group had esophoria greater than two prism dioptres. Exophoric group had exophoria greater than
