We aimed to compare the Ishihara pseudoisochromatic colour vision test with a colour vision test from a popular smartphone application (EyeHandBook [EHB]) using digital image processing to simulate colour vision deficiencies. Three digital versions of the Ishihara and EHB slides were created: full colour; 32 bit- greyscale (removing all colour information); and blue channel (to simulate red-green colour vision deficiencies). BACKGROUND: A surprisingly high 15 per cent of women in Caucasian societies are carriers of the genes for abnormal colour vision but there is no clinical method to identify them. It has long been known that heterozygotes for the protan colour vision deficiencies can demonstrate a reduced luminous sensitivity to red light. This is known as Schmidt's sign, which is thought to arise from mosaicism (Lyonisation). The Medmont C-100 colour vision test measures relative spectral sensitivity using flicker photometry to differentiate protans and deutans. It should be able to diagnose Schmidt's sign.

We tested 1002 persons, 572 divers (including 38 who had diving accidents) and 430 nondivers, for defects of the blue-sensitive system during the years 1988 and 1989. Recent research has shown functional disorders of color vision in divers, linked to previously described alterations of the retinal capillary system and pigment epithelium. Dogs are important large animal models of human retinal disorders. Visual navigation ability is an important outcome measure with relevance to real-world conditions. Here we describe methods to conduct behavioral assessment of dog visual navigation ability in a variety of luminance conditions.
