Dermatosis contributing factors in bilateral lower limb war-amputees.

This study conducted to assess the factors related to skin lesions in bilateral lower limb war-amputees. This is a clinical based, cross-sectional study of 335 bilateral amputees who injured during Iran-Iraq War. Their demographics and injuries detail, amputation, prosthesis and gait-aid characteristics, stump hygiene and skin problems, have been investigated. Through logistic regression analysis, the three factors of the shape of the stumps, the length of the stumps and excessive perspiration were recognized to have an independent association in skin lesions development, among the population

Bilateral transfemoral/transtibial amputations due to battle injuries: a comparison of Vietnam veterans with Iraq and Afghanistan servicemembers.

BACKGROUND: Multiple limb loss from combat injuries has increased as a proportion of all combat-wounded amputees. Bilateral lower-extremity limb loss is the most common, with bilateral transfemoral amputations being the most common subgroup followed by bilateral amputations consisting of a single transfemoral amputation and a single transtibial amputation (TFTT). With improvements in rehabilitation and prostheses, we believe it is important to ascertain how TFTT amputees from the present conflicts compare to those from the Vietnam War. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We compared self-reported (1) health

Surgery under fire: war injuries and the consequences of delayed care in Ethiopia's Tigray region.

BACKGROUND: The armed conflict in Ethiopia, particularly in the Tigray region, has caused a substantial burden of war-related injuries in the context of a fragile and disrupted health system. Restricted access to timely surgical care has resulted in delayed presentation and may contribute to secondary complications, contractures, peripheral nerve dysfunction, and long-term disability. However, the consequences of delayed surgical treatment for conflict-related extremity trauma in active war settings remain insufficiently described. This study aimed to characterize conflict-related injuries in

Proposed explanations for excess injury among veterans of the Persian Gulf War and a call for greater attention from policymakers and researchers.

INTRODUCTION: Death rates among US veterans of the Persian Gulf War were lower than rates among non-deployed veterans and the US population at large, with the exception of injury deaths; returning veterans were at significantly greater risk of injury mortality. Similar patterns of excess injury mortality were documented among US and Australian veterans returning from Vietnam. In spite of these consistent findings little has been done to explain these associations and in particular to determine whether or not, and how, war related exposures influence injury risk among veterans returning home af

ResQFoam for the Treatment of Non-Compressible Hemorrhage on the Front Line.

Noncompressible torso hemorrhage is the leading cause of potentially survivable death on the battlefield. While medical advances have decreased the rate of "died of wounds" to less than 5%, significant treatment limitations in pre-hospital care remain. To address this persistent capability gap, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency launched the Wound Stasis System program in 2010. Under that program, Arsenal Medical, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, developed a novel, self-expanding polyurethane foam that rapidly treats major abdominal bl

Management of vena caval injuries: the Vietnam vascular registry review.

Injuries to major vessels during combat have been associated with high mortality and morbidity, despite optimal triage and management. Eighty-two vena caval injuries from the Vietnam Vascular Registry (VVR) series have been studied. The nature of the wounding agents, location of wounds, and associated injuries have been documented and are contrasted with those of recent civilian series. Seventy-eight abdominal vena caval injuries were associated with mortality in 18 (23%), in whom 56 underwent repair of the injury and 15 had ligation of the inferior vena cava. This is the largest series report

Static and dynamic postural stability in veterans with combat-related mild traumatic brain injury.

Persistent post-concussive symptoms are reported by 10-15% of individuals who suffer mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), but their basis is often uncertain. One such symptom is disequilibrium, a sensation of impaired balance during standing and walking. The hypothesis for this study was that this subjective symptom is associated with objective and measurable deficits in static and dynamic postural stability. An infrared motion tracking system was used to record body motion during quiet standing and in response to waist perturbations in fourteen veterans (age 22-40 years, 13 male) of the Operat

Severe and penetrating traumatic brain injury in the context of war.

Our data suggests that traumatic brain injury (TBI) may account for up to one third of battle-related injuries in today's war. Although the majority of these injuries are classified as mild in severity, service members with severe or penetrating TBI can be faced with many challenges. Injuries sustained on the battlefield require a slightly different approach than the TBI care that is traditionally seen in a civilian setting. This article presents the range of care that occurs beginning on the battlefield and continuing to state-of-the-art rehabilitation within the Department of Defense and Vet

Evolution of spinal cord injury treatment in military neurosurgery.

During the mid-1900s, military medicine made historical advancements in the diagnosis, stabilization, and treatment of spinal cord injuries (SCIs). In particular, World War II was an inflection point for clinical practice related to SCIs because of the vast number of devastating injuries to soldiers seen during World War I (WWI). The unprecedented rate of SCI along with growth in the field served as a catalyst for surgical and interdisciplinary advancements through the increased exposure to this challenging pathology. Initially, a tragic fate was assumed for soldiers with SCIs in WWI resulting
