SOURCE AND SEASONALITY OF EPIZOOTIC MYCOPLASMOSIS IN FREE-RANGING PRONGHORN (ANTILOCAPRA AMERICANA).

Mycoplasma bovis is an economically important bacterial pathogen of cattle (Bos taurus) and bison (Bison bison) that most commonly causes pneumonia, polyarthritis, and mastitis. It is prevalent in cattle and ranched bison; however, infections in other species are rare. In early 2019, we identified M. bovis in free-ranging pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in northeastern Wyoming. Here, we report on additional pronghorn mortalities caused by M. bovis, in the same approximately 120-km2 geographic region 1 yr later. Genetic analysis by multilocus sequence typing revealed that the mortalities were

Iodine-129 in mule deer thyroids in the Rocky Mountain West.

Thyroids from mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were collected in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho and 129I/127I atom ratios were determined. Iodine-129/127 atom ratios were significantly (P less than 0.005) different among states. Ratios in Wyoming and Idaho control thyroids were significantly (P less than 0.05) larger than ratios in New Mexico and Colorado. Fallout from past atmospheric nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site is suggested as a possible explanation for the differences in ratios. Average 129I/127I ratios in thyroids of other large mammals collected 54 km west and 116 km nor

Tularemia (Francisella tularensis) in a Black-Tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) Colony.

Tularemia is a bacterial zoonosis caused by Francisella tularensis. We conducted a serosurvey of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming, US, following an epizootic in voles ( Microtus spp.) due to F. tularensis. Only 1 of 44 (2%) sampled prairie dogs was seropositive for F. tularensis, providing evidence of survival and potentially limited spread among free-ranging prairie dogs.

Plague in a black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes).

Diagnosis of sylvatic plague in a captive black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) was based on gross and microscopic lesions, fluorescent antibody tests, culture of Yersinia pestis, and immunohistochemistry. Gross lesions consisted of acute hemorrhage and necrosis associated with cervical and mesenteric lymph nodes, subcutaneous hemorrhages, and pulmonary edema. Acute edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis with numerous bacteria in blood vessels and sinusoids characterized microscopic lesions. Occurrence of fatal plague in a black-footed ferret potentially has significant implications for recovery of

Isolation of Pilobolus spp. from the northern elk herd in Yellowstone National Park.

Pilobolus spp. were recovered from all fecal samples collected from an elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) herd in Yellowstone National Park (USA) with a high prevalence of Dictyocaulus viviparus infection. Pilobolus spp. have been shown to be important in the epizootiology of D. viviparus infections in cattle because these fungi aid in dissemination of larvae away from feces to areas where animals are more likely to ingest them, and protect larvae against dehydration and thus prolong survival. The same mechanism of dissemination of D. viviparus larvae may play a role in the epizootiology of these in

The prevalence of farmer's lung in an agricultural population.

Four hundred seventy-one persons associated with farming or dairy production were surveyed by means of a questionnaire for evidence of hypersensitivity lung disease due to inhalation of moldy hay or grain (farmer's lung). Of these, 172 were evaluated with spirometry, serologic studies, and chest roentgenographs. A history typical of the farmer's lung syndrome was given by 14 of the 471 subjects (3.9 per cent). Precipitating antibodies to Micropolyspora faeni were identified in sera from 2 of these 14 subjects (14 per cent), and spirograms were abnormal in 4 (28 per cent). The prevalence of far

Effects of Pregnancy Prevention on Brucella abortus Shedding in American bison (Bison bison).

Products of parturition are the predominant source of Brucella abortus for transmission in bison (Bison bison). Our objective was to assess whether preventing pregnancy in Brucella-seropositive bison reduced B. abortus shedding. Brucella-seropositive and -seronegative bison from Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA were used in a replicated experiment. Each of two replicates (rep1, rep2) included a group of seropositive females treated with a single dose of gonadotropin-releasing hormone-based immunocontraceptive (Treatment rep1, n=15; Treatment rep2, n=20) and an untreated group (Control r

Gross primary production responses to warming, elevated CO2 , and irrigation: quantifying the drivers of ecosystem physiology in a semiarid grassland.

Determining whether the terrestrial biosphere will be a source or sink of carbon (C) under a future climate of elevated CO2 (eCO2 ) and warming requires accurate quantification of gross primary production (GPP), the largest flux of C in the global C cycle. We evaluated 6 years (2007-2012) of flux-derived GPP data from the Prairie Heating and CO2 Enrichment (PHACE) experiment, situated in a grassland in Wyoming, USA. The GPP data were used to calibrate a light response model whose basic formulation has been successfully used in a variety of ecosystems. The model was extended by modeling maximum

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Routine Pediatric Vaccination Rates in 7 Upper Midwestern States.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic stressed healthcare systems by increasing patient loads and creating shortages of both staffing and medical supplies. As a result, the process of administering routine pediatric vaccinations was affected. Multiple studies have reported ongoing decreases in vaccination opportunities. Completed vaccinations on the vaccination schedule for the pediatric population is a highly effective public health intervention and therefore should be maintained at high rates. Decreases in routine pediatric vaccinations could lead to the spread of multiple infectious diseases.

Bartonella and Rickettsia from fleas (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) of prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) from the western United States.

Fleas of prairie dogs have been implicated in the transmission of Bartonella spp. We used PCR to test DNA extracts from 47 fleas of prairie dogs from 6 states. We amplified DNA from 5 unique genotypes of Bartonella spp. and 1 Rickettsia sp. from 12 fleas collected in North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. Sequences from the Bartonella spp. were similar, but not identical, to those from prairie dogs and their fleas in Colorado.

Using infodemiology metrics to assess patient demand for oculoplastic surgeons in the United States: insights from Google Search Trends.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare state-by-state concentrations of oculoplastic surgeons against patient demand using Google Search Trends data, in order to identify potential areas of unmet need. METHODS: Google Trends data from 2004 to 2019 was collected to determine relative search volumes for the keyword "blepharoplasty" in each US state and the District of Columbia. Oculoplastic surgeon density was calculated by dividing the number of active American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons members in 2019 by the State Census Bureau population estimates. Relative search

Screening for celiac disease in a North American population: sequential serology and gastrointestinal symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of diagnosed celiac disease is <1 in 2,000 in the United States, but screening studies undertaken in European and other populations have revealed a much higher prevalence. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of celiac disease and the utility of screening in the general adult population of a geographically isolated area. METHODS: Serum tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG-IgA) were measured in volunteer health-care participants aged ≥ 18 years at the annual Casper, Wyoming, Blue Envelope Health Fair blood draw. Subjects with positive tTG-Ig

Prairie Dog Poisoning in Northern Great Plains:An Analysis of Programs and Policies.

This paper describes the programs and policies regarding prairie dog control in the northern Great Plains states of Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The poisoning programs of federal and state agencies are described, along with the statutes and legal mandates that shape agency management of prairie dogs. Current policies on National Grasslands and other federal lands typically limit prairie dogs to small percentages of available potential habitat, to the detriment of prairie dogs and associated species. State programs to assist landowners in prairie dog control differ greatly, employing cos

Combined effects of energy development and disease on greater sage-grouse.

Species of conservation concern are increasingly threatened by multiple, anthropogenic stressors which are outside their evolutionary experience. Greater sage-grouse are highly susceptible to the impacts of two such stressors: oil and gas (energy) development and West Nile virus (WNv). However, the combined effects of these stressors and their potential interactions have not been quantified. We used lek (breeding ground) counts across a landscape encompassing extensive local and regional variation in the intensity of energy development to quantify the effects of energy development on lek count

Oldest evidence for grooming claws in euprimates.

Euprimates are unusual among mammals in having fingers and toes with flat nails. While it seems clear that the ancestral stock from which euprimates evolved had claw-bearing digits, the available fossil record has not yet contributed a detailed understanding of the transition from claws to nails. This study helps clarify the evolutionary history of the second pedal digit with fossils representing the distal phalanx of digit two (dpII), and has broader implications for other digits. Among extant primates, the keratinized structure on the pedal dpII widely varies in form. Extant strepsirrhines a
