CO2 laser stapedotomy.

This clinical study was preceded by two laboratory experiments. The first experiment compared temperature changes in the vestibule while vaporizing a 0.6-mm stapedotomy with Argon, KTP-532, and CO2 lasers. Data demonstrated that the CO2 laser possesses superior tissue characteristics for stapedotomy. In the second experiment safe energy parameters were established for various Sharplan CO2 laser models. Using these safe power settings, 153 consecutive CO2 laser stapedotomies were performed under local anesthesia. No patient experienced intraoperative dizziness during or immediately following th

Variation of the stapes and its surrounding anatomical structures based on micro-computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Stapedotomy is the most efficient treatment for otosclerosis. The anatomical structure of the operation area is complex, but it has a great impact on the postoperative effect. We measure the anatomical parameters of the stapes and its surrounding structures to provide an anatomical reference for stapes surgery in otosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen adult cadaver heads (30 samples) were scanned using micro-CT. The stapes, facial nerve and external auditory canal were reconstructed by image processing. The stapes parameters and relationships between the stapes and surroundi

Evolution and development of the fish jaw skeleton.

The evolution of the jaw represents a key innovation in driving the diversification of vertebrate body plans and behavior. The pharyngeal apparatus originated as gill bars separated by slits in chordate ancestors to vertebrates. Later, with the acquisition of neural crest, pharyngeal arches gave rise to branchial basket cartilages in jawless vertebrates (agnathans), and later bone and cartilage of the jaw, jaw support, and gills of jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes). Major events in the evolution of jaw structure from agnathans to gnathostomes include axial regionalization of pharyngeal elements

Morphological Variations of Middle Ear Ossicles and its Clinical Implications.

INTRODUCTION: The middle ear ossicles form a semi rigid chain in the middle of the ear for conduction and amplification of sound waves from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. Although, our knowledge of the ear ossicles dates back to the 15th century, and various studies have been carried out on their morphometry, morphology, anomalies, embryology, function and structure throughout the world, information about the morphology of middle ear ossicles is meagre in Indian subjects. AIM: To find out the morphological variations of middle ear ossicles of right and left sides. MATERIALS AND METH

Laser-assisted fixation of a nitinol stapes prosthesis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Otosclerosis is an inner ear bone disease characterized by fixation of the stapes and consequently progressive hearing loss. One treatment option is the surgical replacement of the stapes by a prosthesis. When so called "smart materials" like nitinol are used, prosthesis fixation can be performed using a laser without manual crimping on the incus. However, specific laser-prosthesis interactions have not been described yet. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the thermo-mechanical properties of the NiTiBOND® prosthesis as a basis for handling instructions for

Active middle ear implant application in case of stapes fixation: a temporal bone study.

HYPOTHESIS: Driving the oval window directly with an active middle ear implant (AMEI) can produce high levels of input to the inner ear. BACKGROUND: Treatment of otosclerosis bypasses the stapes with a piston that penetrates the vestibule. Although this treats the conductive component of hearing loss, it does not treat the sensorineural part, which can be improved using an additional conventional hearing aid. Active middle ear implants have been proposed to be an alternative in treating otosclerosis in cases of mixed hearing losses. METHODS: Seven temporal bones were prepared to expose the s

"Ontogenetic Scaling of the Primate Middle Ear".

The study of primate auditory morphology is a significant area of interest for comparative anatomists, given the phylogenetic relationships that link primate hearing and the morphology of these auditory structures. Extensive literature addresses the form-to-function relationship of the auditory system (outer, middle, and inner ear) in primates and, by extension, provides insight into the auditory system of extinct primates and even modern humans. We add to this literature by describing the ontogenetic trajectory of the middle ear cavity and ossicular chain (malleus, incus, and stapes) due to t

Handheld laser-fiber vibrometry probe for assessing auditory ossicles displacement.

SIGNIFICANCE: Measurements of auditory ossicles displacement are commonly carried out by means of laser-Doppler vibrometry (LDV), which is considered to be a gold standard. The limitation of the LDV method, especially for in vivo measurements, is the necessity to expose an object in a straight line to a laser beam operating from a distance. An alternative to this approach is the use of a handheld laser-fiber vibrometry probe (HLFVP) with a curved tip. AIM: We evaluate the feasibility of an HLFVP with a curved tip for measuring sound-induced displacement of the auditory ossicles. APPROACH: A
