BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Preoperative prediction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) gusher is important for stapes surgery. According to the current opinion settled among otologists and radiologists, the issues of whether enlarged cochlear aqueduct might be a cause of CSF gusher in stapes surgery and which segment of the aqueduct should be taken into account to diagnose enlarged cochlear aqueduct in computerized tomography (CT) are controversial. The case we encountered led us to hypothesize that enlarged cochlear aqueduct might cause CSF gusher in stapes surgery and that shape and diameter of medial

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Stapes fixation combined with fixation, absence, or malformation of the malleus-incus complex requires an uncommon surgical reconstruction and offers a unique combination of challenges and hazards. This situation may occur in the presence of severe tympanosclerosis, otosclerosis, congenital ossicular malformations, and revision surgery for either stapedectomy or chronic ear disease. In previous reports, this procedure has been grouped with total ossicular reconstruction without much distinction. However, the challenges unique to this problem deserve special consideration

An ameloblastoma is a locally aggressive odontogenic tumour that commonly develops from the odontogenic epithelium within the jawbone. Here we present for the first time a case of a rare primary ameloblastoma in the middle ear cavity, along with some consideration of its treatment and a new classification. A 65-year-old woman presented with a left middle ear cavity tumour. Pathological examination led to the diagnosis of an ameloblastoma. We resected the tumour along with an extensive part of the middle ear mucosa, which made it difficult to have an adequate margin. It is recommended that the

Conductive hearing loss (CHL) commonly results from middle ear fluid and inflammation (otitis media). Less commonly in patients with CHL, the middle ear cleft is well aerated or 'dry' with absence of soft tissue or fluid clinically and on imaging. There are numerous causes for this but they can be clinically challenging to diagnose. This pictorial review aims to illustrate and discuss the CT features of both common and less common causes of CHL in patients with a "dry middle ear cavity".

The middle ear is a sophisticated and complex structure with a variety of functions, yet a delicate organ prone to injuries due to various reasons. Both, understanding and reconstructing its functions has always been an important topic for researchers from medical and technical background. Currently, human temporal bones are generally used as model for tests, experiments and validation of the numerical results. However, fresh human preparations are not always easily accessible and their mechanical properties vary with time and between individuals. Therefore we have built an anatomically based

We produced drill-induced damage of the auditory ossicles of guinea pigs to study changes over time in the permeability of the blood vessels of the stria vascularis to horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In group A, the stimulus was applied for 10 seconds after intravenous injection of HRP. In group B, it was applied for 30 seconds, and in group C, for 60 seconds. The cochlea was fixed with 2% glutaraldehyde perfused through the round window, and the guinea pigs were then decapitated. The stria vascularis of the basal and third turns was examined. The leakage of HRP from the blood vessels of the str

The tympanic membrane (TM) is a thin, semi-transparent structure whose morphology and optical appearance provide important diagnostic cues. In the early stages of middle-ear pathology, subtle shape and compliance alterations may precede overt clinical signs, making them valuable early indicators of disease. Such structural changes are difficult to assess reliably using conventional (micro-)otoscopy, which lacks quantitative depth information and is operator-dependent. Data-driven monocular image analysis could enable quantitative assessment of TM geometry and compliance, but the limited availa
