Proximal hypospadias repair with bladder mucosal graft: Our 10 years experience.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: A great variety of different surgical techniques has been described for proximal hypospadias repair and an ideal tissue has not been determined yet. We present our 10 years of surgical experience using a bladder mucosal graft for urethroplasty. STUDY DESIGN: Bladder mucosal graft urethroplasty was performed between 2005 and 2015 in 50 patients with severe proximal hypospadias. The mean age of patients was 45.1 months (range 24-164 months). Hypospadias were perineal in 18 patients, scrotal in 22, and penoscrotal in 10. In all cases a chordee correction was performed

Penile metastases of rectal adenocarcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Penile metastases are very rare and arise most frequently from genitourinary cancers. Penile metastases from rectal adenocarcinoma are less common and only 50 or so cases have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 43-year-old man with penile metastases from a rectal adenocarcinoma. Two years before admittance to our department, abdomino-perineal resection of the rectum (Miles operation) was performed for a Dukes B (T3N0M0) rectal adenocarcinoma; the surgical resection margins wee negative. Adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment were administered. One year afte

A standardised mini pig model for in vivo investigations of anticholinergic effects on bladder function and salivation.

PURPOSE: The objective was to validate an in vivo model for evaluation of pharmacological effects on bladder function taking the most predominant anticholinergic side effect (hyposalivation) into account. Therefore, two anticholinergic properties (propiverine hydrochloride and tolterodine-L(+)-tartrate) were used to test the in vivo model. Sacral anterior root stimulation (SARS) was performed to induce reproducible and standardized bladder contractions. To evaluate hyposalivation standardised salivavary flow measurements by stimulating the lingual nerve was performed in addition to SARS. MATE

[Functional outcomes of surgical treatment of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia].

AIM: To compare the functional outcomes of various surgical procedures, to assess the rate of complications and urination disorders after surgery, and to identify possible risk factors and predictors of unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The functional outcomes of surgical treatment were evaluated in 398 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Patients were divided into 3 groups depending on the surgical method: bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate, laser enucleation of the prostate, and laparoscopic simple prostatectomy. The groups were comparable

Management of pelvic fracture urethral injury.

Pelvic fracture urethral injury (PFUI) represents one of the most challenging entities in reconstructive urology. It predominantly affects the bulbomembranous junction because of its anatomical vulnerability to shearing and compression forces during pelvic trauma. These injuries often result from high-energy accidents, with associated pelvic instability and concomitant injuries, and frequently necessitate a multidisciplinary initial approach. Early management typically involves prompt suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) to divert urine, prevent further contamination, and allow stabilization of the pat

Clinical Outcomes of Total Peri-Adventitial Cystectomy Compared to Conventional Techniques in Pediatric Pulmonary Hydatid Disease.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric pulmonary cystic echinococcosis (PCE) frequently necessitates surgical intervention, but the optimal surgical technique remains a subject of debate. Total peri-adventitial cystectomy (TPAC) is a radical surgical approach with potential benefits, but its use is restricted by technical challenges and concerns about complications. This single-center retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness of TPAC compared to conventional surgical techniques in managing pediatric PCE. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included 135 pediatric patients (aged ≤1

Impact of surgical intervention timing on the case fatality rate for Fournier's gangrene: an analysis of 379 cases.

UNLABELLED: Study Type - Prognosis (outcome) Level of Evidence 2b. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Reportedly, Fournier's gangrene has a high mortality rate, ~7.5-40%, and experts recommend early surgical debridement. This study examines 379 patients and shows that an early intervention, i.e. within 2 hospital days could halve the mortality rate compared with later intervention. OBJECTIVE: • To examine how early surgical intervention influenced cases of Fournier's gangrene (FG) fatality. PATIENTS AND METHODS: • Patients with FG (defined as an International Classific

Split-appendix technique for simultaneous appendicovesicostomy and appendicocecostomy.

PURPOSE: Surgical treatment of urinary and fecal incontinence with appendicocecostomy (AC) and appendicovesicostomy (AV) has high success in achieving continence. Usually, the appendix can only be used for one of these, requiring the second channel to be constructed from alternative tissue. We describe our outcomes using the split-appendix technique for simultaneous creation of AC and AV. METHODS: We reviewed records for all patients that underwent simultaneous AC and AV from the appendix alone from 1999 to 2009. When anatomy permitted, the appendix was divided into 2. The proximal end was ke

[Bilateral ureteral pseudodiverticulosis with transitional cell tumour].

We present with a case of bilateral ureteral pseudodiverticulosis associated with a transitional cell tumour in the bladder. From a pathogenic point of view, there is currently a trend to consider reactive hyperplasia of transitional cell epithelium as secondary to chronic inflammatory processes which would form such pseudodiverticula. On account of that association it is advisable to perform follow-up tests on these patients to enable us to reach an early diagnosis of these tumours.

Urolithiasis in Renal Allografts: Complications and Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Urinary calculi rarely occur in renal transplant. However, because of peculiarities shown with renal allografts, a prudent approach is necessary to prevent further complications or even graft failure. There are no well-established guidelines for uro?ithiasis in renal grafts regarding adequate therapy selection. In the present article, different therapeutic interventions are discussed, including in 1 case a pyelovesicostomy as an uncommon intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data of 1115 patients who underwent renal transplant between January 2002 and De

An Assessment of Patient Comfort and Morbidity After Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy with Suprapubic Tube Versus Urethral Catheter Drainage.

OBJECTIVE: Robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) with suprapubic tube (SPT), compared to urethral catheter (UC) drainage, has been proposed to improve patient comfort and recovery. We sought to compare short-term outcomes for pain and morbidity after RALP with SPT vs UC drainage. METHODS: Between August 2012 and 2014, 159 men underwent a RALP and prospectively completed a questionnaire addressing postoperative pain and satisfaction. Group 1 (n = 94) underwent a RALP by one surgeon who placed a UC and removed it between postoperative day (POD) 7 and 10. Group 2 (n = 65) underwent a

Modification of an intrauterine shunt catheter to reduce the incidence of spontaneous displacement.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which of four types of catheters would be the least likely to become displaced spontaneously when employed as a fetoamniotic shunt, by testing the force required to remove the catheters from a lamb's bladder. METHODS: The catheter designs tested were unfeathered straight, unfeathered pig-tailed, superficially feathered, and deeply feathered. The catheters were placed percutaneously into the urinary bladders of recently euthanized newborn lambs. The force required to withdraw the catheters was determined, employing nine measurements for each catheter design. RESULTS: T
