Polycystic ovary syndrome potentiates blood pressure and vascular responses to the cold pressor test.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) predisposes women to cardiovascular diseases. Blood pressure (BP) responses to the cold pressor test (CPT) predict future cardiovascular risk but have yet to be characterized in PCOS. Therefore, we compared BP responses to the CPT between females with PCOS [n = 10; age: 22 ± 3 yr, body mass index (BMI): 23.9 ± 3 kg/m2] and healthy controls (CTRL; n = 10; age: 22 ± 2 yr, BMI: 22.1 ± 2 kg/m2). BP (finger photoplethysmography calibrated to manual sphygmomanometry-derived values), femoral blood flow (duplex ultrasound), and vascular resistance [FVR; mean arterial p

Evening but not morning aerobic training improves sympathetic activity and baroreflex sensitivity in elderly patients with treated hypertension.

The blood pressure-lowering effect of aerobic training is preceded by improving cardiovascular autonomic control. We previously demonstrated that aerobic training conducted in the evening (ET) induces a greater decrease in blood pressure than morning training (MT). To study whether the greater blood pressure decrease after ET occurs through better cardiovascular autonomic regulation, this study aimed to compare MT versus ET on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in treated patients with hypertension. Elderly patients treated for hypertension were randomly

Effect of insulin on indices of cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular compliance in young adults.

Insulin has important vasodilatory effects in the peripheral circulation, but less is known about insulin's role in cerebrovascular control. Herein, we hypothesized both systemic (intravenous) and local (intranasal) insulin administration would increase indices of cerebral blood flow and reduce cerebrovascular compliance (Ci) in young adults. Participants were assigned to one of four separate protocols. Middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv, transcranial Doppler ultrasound) and blood pressure (BP, finger photoplethysmography) were measured at baseline and at 1) 2 min of carbon dioxide (C

Blunted Exercise Pressor Response to Isometric Knee Extension and Post-Exercise Ischemia in Individuals with Down Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit autonomic dysfunction, which contributes to reduced work capacity. The metaboreflex produces exercise-induced sympathoexcitation and can be assessed via post-exercise muscle ischemia (PEMI). Blunted sympathoexcitation is common in individuals with DS and contributes to the physiological basis for reduced work capacity observed this population, but the influence of the metaboreflex is unknown. Using unilateral isometric knee extension exercise with PEMI, we hypothesized that individuals with DS would demonstrate a reduced metaboreflex co

Impact of ischemic heart disease and cardiac rehabilitation on cerebrovascular compliance.

We aimed to determine the influence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on cerebrovascular compliance index (Ci). Eleven (one female) patients with IHD (mean[SD]: 61[11] yr, 29[4] kg/m2) underwent 6 mo of CR, which consisted of ≥3 sessions/wk of aerobic and resistance training (20-60 min each). Ten (three female) similarly aged controls (CON) were tested at baseline as a comparator group. Middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv) and mean arterial pressure were monitored continuously using transcranial Doppler ultrasound and finger photoplethysmography, respectively, d

A single high-fat Western meal modulates vascular responsiveness to sympathetic activation at rest and during exercise in humans: a randomized controlled trial.

A single high-fat Western meal transiently reduces endothelium-dependent vasodilation at rest, but the interaction with sympathetic vasoconstrictor activity during exercise remains unknown. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that a single high-fat Western meal would impair the ability of contracting skeletal muscle to offset vascular responsiveness to sympathetic activation during exercise, termed functional sympatholysis. In 18 (10 females/8 males) healthy young adults, forearm blood flow (Doppler ultrasound) and beat-to-beat arterial pressure (photoplethysmography) were measured during lower-b

Baroreflex function in Parkinson's disease: insights from the modified-Oxford technique.

Nonmotor symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and they include dysregulation of cardiovascular system, which adversely affects quality of life. Recent studies provide indirect evidence that baroreflex dysfunction may be one of the mechanisms of cardiovascular dysregulation in PD. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that the baroreflex gain, assessed across an extensive range of the reflex arc by eliciting rapid changes in blood pressure (BP) induced by sequential boluses of vasoactive drugs (modified-Oxford technique) would be attenuated in middle-aged patients with PD. Beat-to-beat he

Water deprivation does not augment sympathetic or pressor responses to sciatic afferent nerve stimulation in rats or to static exercise in humans.

Excess dietary salt intake excites central sympathetic networks, which may be related to plasma hypernatremia. Plasma hypernatremia also occurs following water deprivation (WD). The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that WD induces hypernatremia and consequently augments sympathetic and pressor responses to sympathoexcitatory stimuli in rats and humans. Sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) responses to sciatic afferent nerve stimulation (2-20 Hz) and chemical stimulation of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) were assessed in rats after 48 h of

Dietary nitrate restores compensatory vasodilation and exercise capacity in response to a compromise in oxygen delivery in the noncompensator phenotype.

Recently, dietary nitrate supplementation has been shown to improve exercise capacity in healthy individuals through a potential nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway. Nitric oxide has been shown to play an important role in compensatory vasodilation during exercise under hypoperfusion. Previously, we established that certain individuals lack a vasodilation response when perfusion pressure reductions compromise exercising muscle blood flow. Whether this lack of compensatory vasodilation in healthy, young individuals can be restored with dietary nitrate supplementation is unknown. Six healthy (2

In-Ear SpO2: A Tool for Wearable, Unobtrusive Monitoring of Core Blood Oxygen Saturation.

The non-invasive estimation of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) by pulse oximetry is of vital importance clinically, from the detection of sleep apnea to the recent ambulatory monitoring of hypoxemia in the delayed post-infective phase of COVID-19. In this proof of concept study, we set out to establish the feasibility of SpO2 measurement from the ear canal as a convenient site for long term monitoring, and perform a comprehensive comparison with the right index finger-the conventional clinical measurement site. During resting blood oxygen saturation estimation, we found a root mean square diffe

Sympathectomy-mediated vasodilatation: a randomized concentration ranging study of epidural bupivacaine.

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that the development of sympathectomy-mediated vasodilatation is dependent on the concentration rather than the dose of epidural local anesthetic administered. METHODS: Sixty subjects receiving lumbar epidural bupivacaine were randomised to one of three groups: A: 10 ml 0.5% (50 mg); B: 10 ml 0.25% (25 mg); and C: 40 ml 0.0625% (25 mg). Groups A and B had equal volume but a twofold difference in drug dose, while groups B and C had equal drug dose, but a fourfold difference in drug volume. At baseline and 5, 10, and 20 min following epidural bupivacaine admini

Computerized photo-plethysmography of the finger.

A microcomputer system for studying photo-plethysmography of the finger (PPF) was designed and applied to 50 non-premedicated healthy boys (one to ten years old) undergoing general anaesthesia (halothane in 70% N2O, with mechanical ventilation) for outpatient inguinal hernia repair. The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of computerized estimations of the photo-plethysmographic (arterial waves) amplitude and to evaluate whether or not PPF allows discrimination between two different surgical stimuli (skin incision, and manipulation of the spermatic cord). When anaesthesia was stab

IMU Sensor-Based Worker Behavior Recognition and Construction of a Cyber-Physical System Environment.

According to South Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor, approximately 25,000 construction workers suffered from various injuries between 2015 and 2019. Additionally, about 500 fatalities occur annually, and multiple studies are being conducted to prevent these accidents and quickly identify their occurrence to secure the golden time for the injured. Recently, AI-based video analysis systems for detecting safety accidents have been introduced. However, these systems are limited to areas where CCTV is installed, and in locations like construction sites, numerous blind spots exist due to the

A portable system for monitoring physiological responses to hypoglycaemia.

Hypoglycaemia is the most common complication affecting people with Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Its onset is characterized by symptoms which include sweating, tremor, palpitations, loss of concentration and tiredness. As part of a research project to investigate the mechanisms of hypoglycaemia we have developed an ambulatory system to monitor and record pulsatile changes in blood flow, pulse interval, body temperature and skin impedance. The system uses a pocket computer (Atari Portfolio) to collect and store the data on a memory card. The analogue system consists of two thermo

Diagnostic Ultrasound-Based Investigation of Central vs. Peripheral Arterial Changes Consequent to Low-Dose Caffeine Ingestion.

Caffeine is present in various foods and medicines and is highly accessible through various routes, regardless of age. However, most studies on caffeine have focused on the effects of high-dose caffeine ingestion based on the recommended daily amount for adults. In this study, we examined the physiological changes in the central and peripheral vessels that may occur when ingesting low-dose caffeine due to its high accessibility, with the aim of creating an environment of safe caffeine ingestion. This study included 26 healthy participants in their 20s. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), heart rate

Morning versus Nocturnal Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability Responses to Intensified Training in Recreational Runners.

BACKGROUND: Resting heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) are widely used parameters to assess cardiac autonomic nervous system function noninvasively. While resting assessments can be performed during sleep or after awakening, it would be relevant to know how interchangeable the results of these measurements are. This study aimed at examining the alignment between nocturnal and morning assessments during regular endurance training and in response to intensive training. A total of 24 recreational runners performed a 3-week baseline period (BL) and a 2-week overload (OL) period (Lucia's trai

Accuracy of Heart Rate Measurement by the Fitbit Charge 2 During Wheelchair Activities in People With Spinal Cord Injury: Instrument Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate (HR) is an important and commonly measured physiological parameter in wearables. HR is often measured at the wrist with the photoplethysmography (PPG) technique, which determines HR based on blood volume changes, and is therefore influenced by blood pressure. In individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), blood pressure control is often altered and could therefore influence HR accuracy measured by the PPG technique. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the HR accuracy measured with the PPG technique with a Fitbit Charge 2 (Fitbit Inc) in wheelchair us

A new device for simultaneous measurement of pelvic floor muscle activity and vaginal blood flow: a test in a nonclinical sample.

INTRODUCTION: Dyspareunia in women, defined as persistent or recurrent genital pain associated with sexual intercourse, is hypothesized to be related to (fear associated) pelvic floor hyperactivity and to diminished sexual arousal. Psychophysiological research to support these hypotheses is scarce and concentrates mostly on the role of either pelvic floor activity or sexual arousal. To investigate both factors, a measurement device that enables simultaneous assessment of pelvic floor muscle activity and genital sexual arousal would be most optimal. AIM: The aim of this study was to test a new
