Detection of Mucorales antigen in bronchoalveolar lavage samples using a newly developed lateral-flow device.

A murine IgG2b monoclonal antibody, named TG11, binding to an extracellular polysaccharide antigen secreted by all Mucorales fungi has been recently developed and integrated into a lateral-flow device (TG11-LFD). The aim of this study was to establish the clinical performance of TG11-LFD on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids for the diagnosis of mucormycosis. Thirteen BAL samples from 13 patients with mucormycosis, all of which tested positive for Mucorales qPCR (Mucor/Rhizopus [n = 5], Lichtheimia [n = 2], Rhizomucor [n = 5], and Cunninghamella [n = 1]), were used to assess the TG11-LFD. Zygomycetes in human disease.

The Zygomycetes represent relatively uncommon isolates in the clinical laboratory, reflecting either environmental contaminants or, less commonly, a clinical disease called zygomycosis. There are two orders of Zygomycetes containing organisms that cause human disease, the Mucorales and the Entomophthorales. The majority of human illness is caused by the Mucorales. While disease is most commonly linked to Rhizopus spp., other organisms are also associated with human infection, including Mucor, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Cunninghamella, Cokeromyces, and Syncephalastrum spp. A

Multi-omics analyses reveal fecal microbial community and metabolic alterations in finishing cattle fed probiotics-fermented distiller's grains diets.

UNLABELLED: Distiller's grains (DG) are a potential source of animal feeds, and many studies have indicated positive regulatory roles of feeding DG diets in animal breeding. However, there is currently a dearth of research on the actions and underlying mechanisms of probiotics-fermented distiller's grains (FDG)-based diets in cattle breeding. This study aimed to assess the impact of integrating FDG into the diet of finishing cattle on their fecal microbial community and metabolites. Thirty Simmental crossbred cattle (local yellow cattle × Simmental cattle, 8.5 months old, 420.38 ± 68.11 kg) we

Neuroinfections caused by fungi.

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections of the central nervous system (FIs-CNS) have become significantly more common over the past 2 decades. Invasion of the CNS largely depends on the immune status of the host and the virulence of the fungal strain. Infections with fungi cause a significant morbidity in immunocompromised hosts, and the involvement of the CNS may lead to fatal consequences. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five articles on fungal neuroinfection in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases were selected for review using the following search words: "fungi and CNS mycoses", CNS funga

Improved outcome of zygomycosis in patients with hematological diseases?

Zygomycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection that is increasingly reported in hematological patients. We describe 2 cases of successfully treated rhino-cerebral zygomycosis and give an overview of 120 patients from the literature with underlying hematological or oncological disorders. These data document the improved survival in sinus (15/17 patients surviving) and cutaneous (6/9 patients surviving) disease. Hematological patients with pulmonary (9/30 patients surviving) or disseminated (4/38 patients surviving) zygomycosis still have a poor prognosis. The clinical course of sinus-orbital
