Correctable and non-correctable visual impairment in a population-based sample of 12-year-old Australian children.

PURPOSE: To document the prevalence of correctable and non-correctable visual impairment in a representative sample of Australian children, predominantly age 12 years. DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study. METHODS: Logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) visual acuity was measured in both eyes unaided, with spectacles if worn, and after subjective refraction if required, in 2353 children, examined during 2004 to 2005. Cycloplegic autorefraction (using cyclopentolate) and dilated fundus examination were performed. Using a cut-off of 0.3 logMAR units (<20/40), presentin

Effects of antidepressant drugs and electroconvulsive shock on pre- and postsynaptic alpha 2-adrenoceptor function in the brain: rapid down-regulation by sibutramine hydrochloride.

Clonidine (0.1 mg/kg IP)-induced hypoactivity and mydriasis responses were respectively used as functional indices of pre- and postsynaptic alpha 2-adrenoceptors in mouse brain. A single injection of various antidepressant drugs had no effect on either response when measured 24 h later. However, 14 days' treatment with sibutramine HCl (3 mg/kg IP), dothiepin (50 mg/kg IP), amitriptyline (10 mg/kg IP), desipramine (10 mg/kg IP) or tranylcypromine (10 mg/kg IP) markedly attenuated both clonidine-induced hypoactivity and mydriasis. Repeated administration of zimeldine (10 mg/kg IP), mianserin (10

Correcting low vision in aphakic children.

There are many children who have subnormal vision in spite of successful cataract surgery and aphakic spectacle lenses. There are children who have lens opacities for whom the state of aphakia would not be an improvement. Careful evaluation of functional vision, careful refraction, and the prescription of high adds or other optical devices are part of complete ophthalmological care for every one of these children. The dioptric strength of the reading add is determined by the functional reading vision and the calculation of the reciprocal of the visual acuity. It is also important to realize th

Diagnostic performance of an artificial intelligence software for diabetic retinopathy organised screening in a pilot study.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) with a prevalence that varies from 10% to 61% in different countries. From healthcare to the precise prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is progressing rapidly in interdisciplinary fields, including ophthalmology. We aimed to explore the efficacy of artificial intelligence (AI)-based screening for diabetic retinopathy in type 2 DM patients. High-resolution colour fundus photographs were obtained for all patients using a non-mydriatic camera (Nidek AFC-330). DA

Comparison of cycloplegic effects of atropine and tropicamide in children with refractive error.

BACKGROUND: Refractive error is the primary cause of vision impairment in children and requires accurate cycloplegic refraction for proper diagnosis and treatment. Various cycloplegic agents are used clinically, but their comparative efficacy remains controversial, particularly across different pediatric age groups and refractive error types. The purpose of this study was to observe the cycloplegic effects of tropicamide and atropine in children of different ages and different refractive errors, and to screen out more suitable drugs for cycloplegia in children with different refractive errors.

Artificial intelligence-based classification of cardiac autonomic neuropathy from retinal fundus images in patients with diabetes: The Silesia Diabetes Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in diabetes mellitus (DM) is independently associated with cardiovascular (CV) events and CV death. Diagnosis of this complication of DM is time-consuming and not routinely performed in the clinical practice, in contrast to fundus retinal imaging which is accessible and routinely performed. Whether artificial intelligence (AI) utilizing retinal images collected through diabetic eye screening can provide an efficient diagnostic method for CAN is unknown. METHODS: This was a single center, observational study in a cohort of patients with DM as a pa
