Anthrax is a rare infection that is transmitted to humans from animals or animal products. In its cutaneous form it may produce lesions of the eyelids which can lead to cicatricization and ectropion. Exophthalmos, optic atrophy and panophthalmitis have also been reported. A case of anthrax affecting the eyelid of a patient seen by the author in Kabul, Afghanistan, is presented.

The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) has recently been introduced as a clinical procedure. It has been thought by many to represent activity of the retinal ganglion cells, although this is still a matter of contention. Visual conversion reaction (VCR) is a psychosomatic illness that will occasionally be seen by optometrists and ophthalmologists. This paper discusses some of the possible aetiologies and manifestations of the condition. Investigation and management of children with suspected VCR is discussed. Four case histories are presented in which signs of VCR included amblyopia, reduced accommodation and a deterioration in handwriting. The visual field defects presented include a static quantitative anomaly. Such a defect has not previously been reported.

Analysis of 98 progressive addition lens (PAL) wearers was undertaken using both mailed questionnaires and by assessing patient records. Statistical analysis was undertaken to investigate the nature and dependent variables of a PAL population. The PAL patients were from the Aston University undergraduate optometric clinic. Social survey techniques, such as the use of personalized mail, first-class stamps, and follow-up letters, were employed to produce a high return rate for the questionnaire. The non-linear trends in the mean amplitude of accommodation with age that are observed in transverse studies as presbyopia is approached can be explained in terms of the summated effect of many individual linear trends. Increases in the near addition that may be required by patients after their early fifties are probably associated with an age-dependent decrease in acuity, which necessitates a closer working distance to increase angular subtense, rather than with any continuing decline in accommodation.

One of the most common indications for the fitting of therapeutic contact lenses is bullous keratopathy, a painful condition often iatrogenic in origin and more usually encountered in elderly patients. A retrospective study of 30 patients fitted with therapeutic lenses for the condition and followed up for at least a year showed that the symptoms of bullous keratopathy were reduced in most cases. Disturbances of binocular vision are described clinically by the Duane-White classification in terms of the magnitude of the accommodative-convergence ratio (AC/A). Convergence excess and convergence insufficiency are assumed to result from high and low AC/A ratios respectively. It is assumed that the abnormal AC/A ratio is an independent variable that underlies abnormal phorias. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the AC/A ratio is inversely related to the adaptability of tonic accommodation (lens adaptation) and directly related to adaptability of tonic vergence (prism adaptation)

This study investigates whether, during a sustained near-vision task, the convergent accommodation (CA) derived initially from the fast (reflex) vergence response is subsequently maintained by tonic (adaptive) vergence. One eye of each of 15 male pigmented rabbits was fitted with a gas-permeable rigid contact lens. Lenses were worn on a daily basis for an initial period of 7 days with the other eye serving as a control. There is evidence that sympathetic innervation induces decreases in accommodation or accommodation amplitude. If so, emotional stress that produces sympathetic activation should induce similar changes in accommodation. In two experiments, dark focus accommodation was assessed following deep relaxation and after subjects looked at gruesome slides. Results showed that stress exposure led to lower dark focus values than did relaxation. This study presents the prevalence, age, and sex differences of eye diseases in northern Nigeria using the records of 1677 eye hospital patients. The most common eye disease are cataract, refractive error and presbyopia, and diseases of the conjunctiva and sclera. There are no significant age and sex differences in the prevalence of most eye conditions.

The distribution of heterophoria within the general population is significantly non-normal and a high incidence of approximate orthophoria is observed. This observation has been named the orthophorization of heterophoria. It has been suggested that prism adaptation is the mechanism underlying orthophorization. A prolonged occlusion experiment has been used to investigate this possibility and further supports this theory.
