Physical activity, post-traumatic stress disorder, and exposure to torture among asylum seekers in Sweden: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Forced migrant populations have high rates of trauma-related ill health, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Physical activity (PA) is well-established as an effective stress reliever, while insufficient PA is associated with adverse effects on both mental and physical health. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of different levels of PA and its association with PTSD symptom severity, controlled for exposure to torture, among asylum seekers in Sweden. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study, with data from 455 asylum seekers, originating from Afghanist

Trends in the disease burden of maternal sepsis and other maternal infections attributable to iron deficiency from 1990 to 2021 and its projection until 2050.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is a key risk factor for maternal sepsis and other maternal infections (MSMIs). This study aims to investigate the trends of MSMIs attributable to iron deficiency based on data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database. METHODS: Data on MSMIs attributable to iron deficiency were utilized. Epidemiological tendencies were assessed using the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) for age-standardized rate in mortality (ASMR) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The correlation between socio-demographic index (SDI) and age-standardized rates (ASRs

National and Regional Fraction of Cancer Incidence and Death Attributable to Current Tobacco and Water-Pipe Smoking in the Eastern Mediterranean Countries in 2020.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to calculate the Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) of cancers due to tobacco use in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO), where water-pipe smoking is prevalent but its effect was not considered in previous studies. AIMS AND METHODS: We applied Levin's formula to estimate PAFs of cancers due to tobacco use (defined as all type tobacco including both cigarette and water-pipe). We also calculated PAF of water-pipe smoking separately. Exposure prevalence data were retrieved from representative national and subnational surveys. Data on cancer incidence and death were

Global, regional, and national burden of cervical cancer for 195 countries and territories, 2007-2017: findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. The formulation or evaluation on prevention strategies all require an accurate understanding of the burden for cervical cancer burden. We aimed to report the up-to-date estimates of cervical cancer burden at global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: Data were extracted from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 study. The counts, age-standardized rates, and percentage changes of incidence, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and death attributed to cervical cance

Pediatric diseases and operational deployments.

Many nations now export military health as a proactive arm of the nation's contribution to the maintenance of international peace in trouble regions of the world; and all nations are called upon from time to time in emergency and disaster situations to help out in their regions of interest. Children and young teenagers constitute some 50% of war-stricken populations. This paper explores this increasingly important role of military medicine from the point of view of a practicing pediatrician and career doctor-soldier. Many international operational deployments undertaken in the last 5 years hav

Exploring sources of insecurity for Ethiopian Oromo and Somali women who have given birth in Kakuma Refugee Camp: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 44,000 people are forced to flee their homes every day due to conflict or persecution. Although refugee camps are designed to provide a safe temporary location for displaced persons, increasing evidence demonstrates that the camps themselves have become stressful and dangerous long-term places-especially for women. However, there is limited literature focused on refugee women's perspectives on their insecurity. This qualitative study sought to better understand the ways in which women experienced insecurity at a refuge

Multiple rare variants as a cause of a common phenotype: several different lactase persistence associated alleles in a single ethnic group.

Persistence of intestinal lactase into adulthood allows humans to use milk from other mammals as a source of food and water. This genetic trait has arisen by convergent evolution and the derived alleles of at least three different single nucleotide polymorphisms (-13910C>T, -13915T>G, -14010G>C) are associated with lactase persistence in different populations. Each allele occurs on an extended haplotype, consistent with positive directional selection. The SNPs are located in an 'enhancer' sequence in an intron of a neighboring gene (MCM6) and modulate lactase transcription in vitro. However, a

Treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder by trained lay counselors in an African refugee settlement: a randomized controlled trial.

Traumatic stress due to conflict and war causes major mental health problems in many resource-poor countries. The objective of this study was to examine whether trained lay counselors can carry out effective treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a refugee settlement. In a randomized controlled dissemination trial in Uganda with 277 Rwandan and Somalian refugees who were diagnosed with PTSD the authors investigated the effectiveness of psychotherapy administered by lay counselors. Strictly manualized narrative exposure therapy (NET) was compared with more flexible trauma counseli

Mpox knowledge and perception in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mpox, a zoonotic disease long endemic in Africa, has gained renewed global attention due to recent outbreaks. Effective control of the virus relies on public adherence to preventive measures, which is largely shaped by the population's knowledge and perceptions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of good knowledge and positive perceptions of mpox in Africa and to identify associated factors. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus Embase, CINAHL, ScienceDirect,

Vaccine-preventable diseases in migrants in Europe: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Migrants in Europe often face barriers to vaccination, increasing their vulnerability to vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Despite policies promoting catch-up immunisation on arrival, data on VPD burden and outcomes among migrants remain limited. This systematic review synthesises evidence on the prevalence, incidence, mortality, and outcomes of VPDs in migrants across EU/EEA countries, UK, and Switzerland. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Global Health, and grey literature sources (including websites of national public health organisations and agencies) for primary studie

Utilization pattern of antenatal care and determining factors among reproductive-age women in Borama, Somaliland.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care is essential care given during pregnancy, to diagnose and treat complications that could endanger both the lives of mother and child. The risk of dying from pregnancy-related issues is often associated with a lack of access to antenatal care services. This issue is a prominent matter in developing countries such as Somaliland which has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine the frequency and timing of antenatal care utilization and factors influencing it among reproductive-age women. METHODS:

Chlamydia trachomatis infection among female inmates at Briman prison in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the western countries; its prevalence in the conservative Muslim population of Saudi Arabia is not known, but it is generally believed to be low. This study is the first to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for C. trachomatis infection in the high-risk group of female inmates at Briman Prison in Jeddah. METHODS: The inmates were interviewed using a pre-designed questionnaire, and their urine samples were tested for C. trachomatis infection by real-time PCR assay. RESULTS: The o

Local, national, and regional viral haemorrhagic fever pandemic potential in Africa: a multistage analysis.

BACKGROUND: Predicting when and where pathogens will emerge is difficult, yet, as shown by the recent Ebola and Zika epidemics, effective and timely responses are key. It is therefore crucial to transition from reactive to proactive responses for these pathogens. To better identify priorities for outbreak mitigation and prevention, we developed a cohesive framework combining disparate methods and data sources, and assessed subnational pandemic potential for four viral haemorrhagic fevers in Africa, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, Ebola virus disease, Lassa fever, and Marburg virus disease.
