Knowledge and Prevalence of Bruxism and Its Association With Stress Among Clinical-Year Dental and Medical Students at the University of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is a repetitive jaw-muscle activity characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible. Current international consensus regards it as a motor behaviour rather than a disorder, and one that may act as a risk factor for tooth wear and temporomandibular disorders; psychosocial stress is among its most consistently reported associated factors. Clinical-year dental and medical students face intense academic and clinical pressure that may predispose them to both stress and bruxism, yet no published Ghanaian data on this relationship

Denture-Associated Candidiasis and Mucormycosis in Post-COVID-19 Older Adults Managed Through an Integrated Prosthodontic and Infectious Disease Approach: A Narrative Review.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant vulnerabilities among older adults, particularly denture wearers, to opportunistic fungal infections, including mucormycosis and oral candidiasis. This narrative review, following PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Narrative Reviews) guidelines, collected evidence from 2020 to 2025 to examine the connection between denture use, systemic comorbidities, and fungal complications in elderly individuals after COVID-19. A total of 21 of 104 studies were included, covering case-control, cross-secti

Comparative cranial ontogeny of Tapirus (Mammalia: Perissodactyla: Tapiridae).

Skull morphology in tapirs is particularly interesting due to the presence of a proboscis with important trophic, sensory and behavioral functions. Several studies have dealt with tapir skull osteology but chiefly in a comparative framework between fossil and recent species of tapirs. Only one study examined an aspect of cranial ontogeny, development of the sagittal crest (Holbrook. J Zool Soc Lond 2002; 256; 215). Our goal is to describe in detail the morphological changes that occur during the postnatal ontogeny of the skull in two representative tapir species, Tapirus terrestris and Tapirus

A pilot randomised controlled trial evaluating mini and conventional implant retained dentures on the function and quality of life of patients with an edentulous mandible.

BACKGROUND: Total tooth loss (edentulism) can be a debilitating condition, impacting on ability to chew, speak and interact with others. The most common treatment is with complete removable dentures, which may be successful, but in the lower jaw, bone resorption that worsens over time makes denture-wearing difficult. Two dental implants in the mandible to retain the lower denture has been advocated as the gold standard of treatment, but has not been universally provided due largely to financial constraints and also patient fear. Mini implants (MI) are cheaper and less invasive than conventiona

Effect of occlusal wear on bone loss and Periotest value of dental implants.

PURPOSE: Occlusal overload may contribute to the loss of osseointegration of oral implants, so some clinicians are reluctant to place implants in patients with signs of bruxism. This study evaluated the effect of occlusal wear as a probable sign of bruxism on bone loss and implant stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study investigated 379 patients who had worn implant-retained or implant-supported restorations for many years. Occlusal wear, patient age and gender, time of prosthetic loading, jaw, location in the dental arch, implant diameter, prosthesis construction, occlusal material, peri

The prevalence, clinical features, and related factors of dentin hypersensitivity in the Turkish population.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence and predisposing and etiologic factors of dentin hypersensitivity (DH), as well as the demographic characteristics of patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 1210 patients were examined. The research was based on a two-step investigation: questionnaire and clinical examination. DH was evaluated by the response of the patient to tactile and air-blast stimuli. Loss of attachment and gingival recession of sensitive teeth was measured on the buccal and lingual surfaces. Also, the tooth wear of sensitive teeth was graded on the bucc

Performance of PEEK based telescopic crowns, a comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: Telescopic crowns are suitable components of partial dentures to efficiently anchor dental supra-structures to teeth or dental implants and achieve high chewing performance and wear comfort. Usually alloy- or metal-based structures are used for the primary and the secondary crowns. The advantage is the possibility to produce precise structures with a high perfection and sufficient friction force, but the disadvantage is the corrosion instability. The recent introduction of zirconia ceramics has enabled the fabrication of ceramic primary crowns, thus reducing corrodibility. The novel

Risk management in clinical practice. Part 8. Temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders can arise apparently idiopathically, as a result of macro-trauma or micro-trauma such as parafunction, as a result of a separate disease process or as a consequence of dental treatment. The objectives of this chapter are to make the practitioner aware of his/her responsibilities in any of these situations. Precise record keeping and careful risk management are essential. Guidelines are given to protect not only the practitioner but also the patient.

Comparative Efficacy of Botulinum Toxin Type A Versus Antihomotoxic Therapy in the Treatment of Bruxism-Related Masticatory Muscle Hyperactivity: A Randomized Clinical Trial Using Electromyographic Measurements.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is currently defined, according to the international consensus of Lobbezoo and colleagues, as a repetitive masticatory muscle activity characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or bracing or thrusting of the mandible. It is a motor behaviour-not a disorder in itself-that may act as a risk factor for orofacial pain, tooth wear, masticatory muscle hypertrophy and temporomandibular disorders in susceptible individuals. Pharmacological management is indicated only when such sequelae are present. Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) has emerged as a widely investigated o

Digital Design for Lower Incisor Position Correction in a Growing Patient with Mandibular Retrusion with ClinCheckÒ Software: A Case Report.

Background: The majority of Class II malocclusions stem from mandibular deficiency, leading to chin retrusion. In growing patients, the ideal correction-aiming for a skeletal mandibular response-should avoid common pitfalls such as "Point B" dropping postero-inferiorly, excessive labial proclination of mandibular incisors, or the lingual tipping and extrusion of maxillary incisors. When planning mandibular advancement (MA) using clear aligners with integrated advancement features, biomechanical forces are not the only consideration; precise management of the lower incisor position is critical

Digital and analog techniques for cemento-enamel junction reconstruction: A case study.

BACKGROUND: Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) refer to the loss of dental hard tissue in the cervical region due to physical and/or chemical factors, often associated with the disappearance of the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ), posing challenges in both diagnosis and treatment of gingival recessions (GR). This case study introduces two protocols for multidisciplinary CEJ reconstruction prior to the root coverage therapy (RCT). METHODS: Two patients with GR and NCCLs were treated using two CEJ reconstruction techniques: both, analogically and digitally guided. For each case, the position of

Resilient appliance therapy of temporomandibular disorders. Subdiagnoses, sense of coherence and treatment outcome.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with orofacial pain with or without reduced jaw function, are frequent conditions in the general population. Different factors such as tooth clenching and grinding, sometimes due to enhanced psychosocial stress, and trauma to the jaws may be important as etiologic factors. Signs and symptoms of TMD are a common cause for general practitioners to use different intraoral appliances as pain and bite-force reducing devices and for improvement of a reduced jaw function. Intraoral appliances are often used parallel to other treatment modalities. Before treatment sta

Which mechanical and physical testing methods are relevant for predicting the clinical performance of ceramic-based dental prostheses?

PURPOSE: The survival and performance of clinical prostheses with a ceramic component are probabilistic in nature. Only under very rare circumstances will all of the prostheses in a group exhibit either 100% successes or 100% failures over a period of 5 years or more. Prosthesis failure may be defined as any condition that leads to replacement. These conditions include secondary caries, irreversible pulpitis, excessive wear of opposing tooth surfaces, excessive erosion and roughening of the ceramic surface, ditching of the cement margin, unacceptable esthetics, cracking, chipping and fracture.

Assessment of evidence from teeth and the alveolar bone of skulls.

A notable lack of agreement on a standardised criterion for representing changes in alveolar bone persists, which limits its application in forensic dentistry. This study aimed to describe the data on loss of tooth substance and alveolar bone in skulls. Dental and trabecular bone information from 28 skulls from the German Helmer skull collection was collected through dental charting, intraoral photographs taken with a DSLR camera (Nikon D5600, Nikon Corporation, Japan), and small radiographs obtained using a handheld dental X-ray device (Nomad Pro 2, Kavo Kerr, Biberach, Germany).
