In a study of 34 patients with clinically active tinea pedis it was possible to isolate the responsible dermatophyte from the patients footwear with adhesive tape strips in 41% of the cases. Overgrowth of contaminants was found in most of the rest of the cases. Trichophyton rubrum was the predominant species isolated.

Wild-type, dematiaceous Wangiella dermatitidis (DMD 368) and melanin-deficient mutant (Mel 3) strains derived therefrom were compared for pathogenic and virulent effects in Swiss albino mice following intravenous infection. The incidence, clinical appearance and causative agent of tinea capitis among children of Ethiopian immigrants, was studied. Out of 124 children examined, 36 had scalp lesions and 32 cases were confirmed as scalp-ringworm on direct microscopy. Culture showed the dermatophyte to be Trichophyton violaceum. The clinical presentation, resembling seborrheic dermatitis, without clinically apparent hair invasion, was atypical.

Growth of the yeast form of Sporothrix schenckii (ATCC 14804) was determined in diffusion chambers with 0.45 and 3.0 micron pore size over a period of 24 to 192 h after subcutaneous implantation into mice. MELISA and CF were compared using sera from paracoccidioidomycosis patients before treatment and patients undergoing antimycotic treatment. With MELISA it was possible to distinguish different antibody levels in both groups of patients whereas such distinction was not observed by using CF tests. MELISA is thus an advantageous alternative to CF in the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis, including the possibility of testing sera with anticomplementary activity.

A man developed paracoccidioidomycosis with non-productive cough and changes on chest roentgenogram one year following agricultural work in Ecuador. Oropharyngeal and nasal lesions developed 2 years later. This chronic fungal infection is typically difficult to cure, and relapses are common. After treatment with 2.5 g of amphotericin B and a 3-year course of triple sulfa, our patient remained free of disease during 12 years of follow-up.

The ELISA procedure was adapted for quantitation of antibodies against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Using a yeast cytoplasmic antigen and sera from patients with proven paracoccidioidomycosis, we found that 66% of sera reacted at titers greater than or equal to 1:128. BALB/c mice were inoculated by intranasal challenge with viable arthroconidia of C. immitis and in-vivo morphogenesis of the fungal pathogen was investigated by electron-microscopic examination of pulmonary lavage and cryofractured lung specimens. Samples were prepared at intervals over an 11-day period. Stages of spherule and endospore development were easily identified by scanning and thin-section electron microscopy. Details of morphogenesis of the pathogen in vivo closely resemble developmental aspects reported from in-vitro studies.

Four cases of disseminated aspergillosis caused by Aspergillus deflectus in German Shepherds are presented. Three of the cases, which involved multiple organs, terminated in euthanasia. One case, with bony involvement of the limbs and skull, lived. The unique morphological characteristic of the conidial head resembling a briar pipe led to the identification of A. deflectus. To the authors' knowledge these are the first reported cases of infections caused by A. deflectus in man or animal.
