A multicountry ecological study of cancer incidence rates in 2008 with respect to various risk-modifying factors.

Observational and ecological studies are generally used to determine the presence of effect of cancer risk-modifying factors. Researchers generally agree that environmental factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and low serum 25-hdyroxyvitamin D levels are important cancer risk factors. This ecological study used age-adjusted incidence rates for 21 cancers for 157 countries (87 with high-quality data) in 2008 with respect to dietary supply and other factors, including per capita gross domestic product, life expectancy, lung cancer incidence rate (an

Screening for comprehensive social needs in patients with cancer: a narrative review.

BackgroundPatients with cancer who report social needs have worse quality of life, lower health-care access, and suboptimal health outcomes. However, screening for social needs does not happen systematically, and successful screening tools, strategies, and workflows have seldom been described. The downstream effects of screening including resource navigation have also not been well characterized. The objective of this narrative review was to fill these gaps.MethodsTwo investigators searched PubMed and Embase for studies that implemented a patient-facing social screening tool among patients wit

Long-Term Cardiovascular Outcomes in Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review.

In recent years, childhood cancer appears to have become more common. Cardiovascular (CV) diseases have been cited as the leading cause of noncancer mortality among childhood cancer survivors. This systematic review evaluated the long-term CV outcomes of childhood cancer survivors. Eleven studies, published between 2015 and 2024 that satisfied the criteria for a thorough assessment, are included in the study. The research found consistent associations between specific cancer treatments, such as anthracyclines, radiation therapy, and total body irradiation, and increased risks of cardiomyopathy

Regional, demographic and temporal trends in anemia and malignant cancer-related mortality in U.S. older adults: a nationwide CDC WONDER analysis (1999-2020).

PurposeAnemia and malignancy concurrently contribute to reduced quality of life, treatment intolerance, and increased morbidity and mortality, disproportionately affecting older adults, socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, and minority populations. Despite its clinical importance, national patterns and population-level disparities in the mortality burden associated with this comorbidity remain poorly characterized. This study aims to examine mortality trends associated with concurrent anemia and malignancy in the United States using CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wid

Real-world Data on Risk Factors for Emergency Department Visits to Treat Outpatient Chemotherapy-Associated Toxicities.

UNLABELLED: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting Program's OP-35 rule penalizes health systems that have a higher-than-expected rate of emergency department (ED) visits or inpatient admissions for 10 potentially preventable conditions within 30 days of receiving chemotherapy. Identifying patients at risk for toxicities and resultant acute care could lead to reducing the rate of such events, improving patient care, and reducing costs. We identified patients with cancer seen in the ED at our institution between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2021,

The role of social, economic, and medical marginalization in cancer clinical trial participation inequities: A systematic review.

Extant literature reveals how patients of marginalized social identities, socioeconomic status (SES), and medical experiences - especially patients of color and older adults - are underrepresented in cancer clinical trials (CCTs). Emerging evidence increasingly indicates CCT underrepresentation among patients of lower SES or rural origin, sexual and gender minorities, and patients with comorbid disability. This review applies an intersectional perspective to characterizing CCT representativeness across race and ethnicity, age, sexual and gender identity, SES, and disability. Four databases wer

Factors associated with early quality-of-life response to palliative care during hematopoietic cell transplantation.

AbstractLimited data exist on factors associated with early quality-of-life (QOL) response to palliative care (PC) in patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). We conducted a secondary analysis from 2 randomized clinical trials of PC vs usual care in adults with hematologic malignancies undergoing HCT. We measured patient-reported QOL, physical and psychological symptoms, and coping (categorized as approach-oriented and avoidant) at the time of HCT admission and 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after HCT. PC clinicians completed weekly surveys documenting PC domains addresse

The burden of illness in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria receiving treatment with the C5-inhibitors eculizumab or ravulizumab: results from a US patient survey.

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare and life-threatening disease with symptoms of hemolysis and thrombosis. Current therapies for this complement-mediated disease rely predominantly on inhibition of the C5 complement protein. However, data on treatment responses and quality of life in C5-inhibitor (C5i)-treated PNH patients are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine C5i treatment effects on clinical parameters, PNH symptoms, quality of life, and resource use for PNH patients. This cross-sectional study surveyed 122 individuals in the USA receiving treatment for PN

Time to haematologist visit and non-haematological referral from primary health care during blood cancer diagnosis - findings from a large national survey in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Blood cancers are the third most common cancer in Australia. However, little is known about their diagnostic pathway in the Australian context. This research aimed to assess the interval between first primary health care (PHC) contact and first haematologist visit, and referrals to specialists other than haematologists (non-haematological referrals) during blood cancer diagnoses. METHODS: An online national survey was conducted with patients living with blood cancers, such as leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and myelodysplastic neoplasms (MD

Impact of race, ethnicity, and social determinants on outcomes following immune checkpoint therapy.

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapies are one of the greatest advances in the history of cancer care and are now commonly used in the management of many different malignancies. However, much remains unknown about the factors that affect the efficacy and side effect profile of these agents. This review delves into the published literature that evaluates the intricate interplay between race, age, gender, and social determinants in shaping outcomes following ICB across solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. We examine the pivotal phase 2 and 3 trials to evaluate the demographics of parti
