OBJECTIVES: The semitendinosus tendon reflex (STR), also known as the medial hamstring reflex, is rarely described in literature and is believed to provide information mainly concerning the fifth lumbar spinal nerve (L5). Latencies can be obtained with clinical neurophysiological tests. Normative data for STR latencies are not available. The aim of this study was to provide normative values of STR latencies. Also we will describe the technique used for performing the tendon reflex measurements in a clinical neurophysiological setting.
METHODS: To determine STR latencies, we measured the stimu

BACKGROUND: Lateral meniscus (LM) posterior root tear (PRT) is often associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and can result in rotational instability, joint overloading, and degenerative changes in the knee. Improved rotational stability and kinematics have been reported after LMPRT repair. However, it is unclear what repair technique can achieve the greatest reduction in LM extrusion (LME).
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that transtibial pullout repair would decrease LME to a greater extent than other repair techniques.

INTRODUCTION: The success of ACL reconstruction is predicated on a variety of factors. Tunnel placement plays one of the most significant roles in achieving knee kinematics and function. The purposes of this study were to compare femoral tunnel position, angle, length and posterior wall blow-out after ACL reconstruction with hamstring tendons autograft through either a farmedial portal or an anteromedial portal technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 36 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction between January 2014 and July 2014 in our institute, in a prospective, randomised cohort stu

PURPOSE: To identify prognostic factors associated with a delayed return-to-sport (RTS) time in amateur athletes who return to full participation after a primary isolated anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed among athletes who underwent ACL reconstruction between October 2014 and October 2021. Inclusion criteria were any amateur athletes with an ACL reconstruction who had a documented RTS and greater than 1-year follow-up. Nonathletes, those with multiligamentous knee injury, and those missing documented RTS timelines were excluded. RT

BACKGROUND: Multiligament knee injuries involving the medial side are common. When performing surgical reconstruction, use of the medial hamstrings (HS) as grafts remains controversial in this setting.
PURPOSE: To determine the role of the medial HS in stabilizing the valgus knee for different types of medial-sided knee injury.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: A biomechanical study on 10 cadaveric knees was performed. Valgus load (force moment of 10 N/m) was applied at 0°, 30°, and 60° of flexion, and the resultant rotation was recorded using an optoelectronic motion anal

Anteromedial rotatory instability (AMRI) resulting from medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries, often combined with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, poses a significant challenge in knee surgery. This study evaluates the use of a novel technique-semimembranosus (SM) tendon transposition-as an augmentation to ACL and superficial MCL (sMCL) reconstruction, reducing medial knee opening and AMRI. A case series of 15 patients with AMRI underwent ACL and sMCL reconstruction with SM tendon transposition between January 2017 and July 2021, with a minimum follow-up of 24 months. Inclusion cri

Background/Objectives: Proximal hamstring injuries involving the biceps femoris-semitendinosus (BF-ST) conjoint tendon (CT) often exhibit delayed healing, yet the prognostic significance of CT involvement and intratendinous injury morphology has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to determine whether full-layer CT injury, particularly bilateral involvement in Zone C, prolongs return-to-play (RTP) in competitive rugby athletes. Methods: This prospective study evaluated 41 university rugby players with acute BF-ST complex injuries using clinical examination, ultrasonography, and MRI. Inj

PURPOSE: After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R), knee muscle strength symmetry is used as part of the return-to-sport criteria. However, little is known about the changes in the force-velocity (F-V) relationship, which could affect athletic performance. This study investigated the F-V relationship of knee muscles at 4 and 8 months after ACL-R, using the 2-point method tested by isokinetic dynamometry.
METHODS: A total of 103 physically trained individuals (24.6 [9.3] y, 59.2% male) who underwent primary ACL-R were included. Demographic information and surgery characteristics

The paediatric population is at particularly high risk for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries due to high rates of sports participation. Other risk factors for ACL injuries in children include but are not limited to being female, generalised ligamentous laxity, a high body mass index (BMI), and poor neuromuscular control. ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is commonly done to treat ACL injuries and allow for return to sports and daily activities. ACL repair is another option with ongoing techniques being developed. The high rates of graft failure in children reported in recent publications on AC

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test a new method of harvesting semitendinosus tendon during anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction that would allow an anatomic reinsertion of the regenerated tendon and minimize postoperative internal rotation strength loss.
METHODS: We prospectively selected 35 patients surgically treated for anterior knee instability. The patients were randomly assigned to either the study group (group A) (19 patients) or the control group (group B) (16 patients). A modified harvesting technique of the semitendinosus, which reserves its distal insertion, was pe

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are becoming more common in younger and older athletes. Approximately 250,000 ACL injuries occur each year, requiring the need for an effective and reproducible surgical technique.
INDICATIONS: The 3-incision outside-in technique utilizes the donor quadriceps tendon, an extraordinarily strong graft, without damage from autogenous harvesting of patellar tendon or hamstrings. While some data suggest higher re-rupture risk with donor tissue, this is counterbalanced by avoiding secondary surgical site damage.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: The ruptur

Hop tests are commonly used to assess return to sports (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), yet whether they can effectively predict successful RTS and reinjury risk remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the associations between hop test performance and the likelihood of RTS and reinjury following ACLR. PubMed, SPORTDiscus with Full Text, MEDLINE and Web of Science were searched for studies that included participants with primary unilateral ACLR, assessed functional performance using hop tests and reported outcomes of RTS and rein

OBJECTIVES: There is a paucity of data about clinical outcomes after double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (DB-ACLR) using the concepts of patient-acceptable symptom state (PASS) and minimal clinically important difference (MCID). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the one-year clinical outcomes of patients who underwent DB-ACLR using PASS and MCID.
METHODS: Achievement of PASS and MCID were retrospectively evaluated for 298 (mean age 26.9 years; 145 men/153 women) and 214 patients (mean age 23.9 years; 114 males/100 females), respectively, who underwent primary DB

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the isokinetic, eccentric and isometric hamstring/quadriceps (HQ) ratios in patients before and after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) using bone-patellar tendon grafts and to establish the relationships between HQ ratio and knee function.
METHODS: Forty-four patients (mean age of 26.6 years) underwent isokinetic testing of quadriceps and hamstring muscles before and after ACLR and HQ ratios were calculated. Lysholm, IKDC and Cincinnati Scores were used to assess function. Isokinetic concentric and eccentric peak torque (Nm/kg) was measured at th

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the most successful feed-forward strategies responsible for enhancing dynamic restraint following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and ACL reconstruction (ACLR). Ten male ACL deficient (ACLD) subjects (18-35 years) together with 27 matched males who had undergone ACLR (14 using a patella tendon graft and 13 using a combined semitendinosus and gracilis graft) and 22 matched-control subjects were recruited. After their knee functionality (0- to 100-point scale) was rated using the Cincinnati Knee Rating System, each subject performed a maximal, c

BACKGROUND: Cortical suspensory fixation (CSF) devices gain more and more popularity as a reliable alternative to interference screws for graft fixation in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Adjustable-loop fixation may be associated with increased anterior laxity and inferior clinical outcome. The purpose of the study was to compare anterior laxity and clinical outcome after minimally invasive all-inside ACL reconstruction using an adjustable-loop (AL) to a standard technique with a fixed-loop (FL) CSF device.
METHODS: Patients who underwent primary single-bundle ACL reconstruc

PURPOSE: The gracilis tendon (GT) is a commonly used autologous graft in Orthopaedic surgery. The majority of information on knee function and outcomes after hamstring harvest is related to both semitendinosus and GT harvest. Little is known regarding isolated harvest of a GT. It was hypothesized that isolated GT harvest would lead to altered gait patterns (e.g. augmented anterior-posterior translation or rotation in the tibiofemoral joint) and consequently a higher prevalence of cartilage lesions and meniscal tears in knees.
METHODS: GT harvesting was performed on patients with chronic acrom
