Effectiveness of 0.01% atropine and orthokeratology for incipient myopia: a 1-year retrospective study.

PURPOSE: To investigate and compare the effectiveness of 0.01% low-dose atropine (LA) and orthokeratology lenses (OK) monotherapy versus single-vision spectacles (SV) in controlling low myopia in clinical settings. METHODS: Treatment-naïve Children with a first diagnosis of myopia using single vision spectacles (SV), LA, or OK for at least 1 year were included in this retrospective study. Data from 140 children’s eyes were analyzed at baseline (before the initiation of treatment) and after 1 year of treatment. ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Multiple Liner Regression were undertaken to identify factors sig

Comparison of the efficacy and clinical applications of three different myopia control methods: repeated low-level red light, 1% atropine, and orthokeratology lenses in children and adolescent.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the mainstream methods for myopia control include atropine, orthokeratology lenses(OK lens), and repeated low-level red light (RLRL). In-depth exploration of different intervention methods are of great significance. METHODS: 600 participants aged 8-16 years with a spherical equivalent (SE) of - 0.50 to - 7.50 D (D) completed 8 months treatment. They were divided into four groups: the RLRL, 1% atropine, OK lens and control (single-vision spectacles [SVS]) group. Each group comprised 150 patients . RESULTS: At baseline, the difference was not statistically significant in

Mean cycloplegic refractive error in emmetropic adults - The Tehran Eye Study.

PURPOSE: In children under 20 years, refractive development targets a cycloplegic refractive error of +0.5 to +1.5D, while presbyopes over 40 years generally have non-cycloplegic errors of ≥ +1D. Some papers suggest these periods are separated by a period of myopic refractive error (i.e., ≤ -0.50D), but this remains unclear. Hence, this work investigates the mean cycloplegic refractive error in adults aged between 20 - 40 years. METHODS: In 2002 a cross-sectional study with stratified cluster sampling was performed on the population of Tehran, providing cycloplegic and non-cycloplegic refract

Medical interventions for traumatic hyphema.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic hyphema is the entry of blood into the anterior chamber (the space between the cornea and iris) subsequent to a blow or a projectile striking the eye. Hyphema uncommonly causes permanent loss of vision. Associated trauma (e.g. corneal staining, traumatic cataract, angle recession glaucoma, optic atrophy, etc.) may seriously affect vision. Such complications may lead to permanent impairment of vision. Patients with sickle cell trait/disease may be particularly susceptible to increases of elevated intraocular pressure. If rebleeding occurs, the rates and severity of complic

Acute hydrops in keratectasia after radial keratotomy.

A 28-year-old male who underwent uneventful radial keratotomy for myopic correction 8 years earlier presented with sudden decrease in vision in the right eye. Slitlamp examination revealed 16 healed radial corneal scars in both eyes along with marked corneal edema and conjunctival congestion in the right eye. The Scheimpflug cross-sectional image of the right cornea displayed an intrastromal aqueous cleft in communication with the anterior chamber, consistent with the diagnosis of acute hydrops. The topographic and pachymetric analysis of the left eye revealed increased paracentral elevation o

Acute angle closure after implantable contact lens insertion unresponsive to surgical peripheral iridectomy.

We present a case of acute angle closure that occurred after insertion of an implantable contact lens (ICL). The apparent papillary-block angle closure did not resolve after 2 patent iridotomies and a surgical iridectomy, but did respond to pupil dilation (not constriction). Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed abnormally large and irregular ciliary processes that may have contributed to the unusual behavior of the ICL-iris complex. The condition resolved after the ICL was replaced by one with a smaller haptic diameter. Routine ultrasound biomicroscopic assessment of the ciliary body anatomy preo

Allergic contact blepheroconjunctivitis with phenylephrine eyedrops--the relevance of late readings of intradermal tests.

Allergic reactions to midriatic eyedrops are rare despite extensively used by ophthalmologists. Phenylephrine is responsible for 54-95% of cases reported in literature. We present the case of a 56-year-old man with blepharoconjunctivitis after instillation of phenylephrine 5%, tropicamide 0.5%, oxibuprocaine eyedrops. The patient reported good tolerance to the mentioned drugs. Immediate readings of prick and intradermal tests, performed with the suspected drugs, were negative. Late readings (48 and 72 hours) of epicutaneous tests were also negative. At 72 hours, prick and intradermal tests to

The tropicamide test in patients with dementia of Alzheimer type and frontotemporal dementia.

The tropicamide test was applied to 30 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (pAD), 12 with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and 46 healthy subjects. One drop of 0.01% tropicamide was instilled in one eye and one drop of saline solution in the other. The pupil diameter was measured with a Goldmann pupillometer in its basal condition and 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 45 and 55 minutes afterwards. The results do not show differences between pupil dilation observed in pAD and in FTD; in both groups, from the beginning of the test, the pupil dilated more than in healthy people.
