The predictive value of forearm bone mineral content measurements in men.

Six hundred and fifty-four men had their bone mineral content (BMC) measured with single photon absorptiometry during 1970-1976. All roentgenograms 1975-1985 (11 years) were registered and thus all falls requiring roentgen examinations. BMC was found to be of predictive value in ages below 70-80 with regard to future fragility fractures. Other characteristics were more falls, less grip strength, and weight. A history of previous vertebral fracture and cerebral disorder were also predictive. Men with only nonfragility fractures showed no differences compared to the nonfracture population.

Total body bone mineral in light-for-gestational-age infants and appropriate-for-gestational-age infants.

Dual-photon-absorptiometry using 153Gd in a whole body scanner was used to measure total body bone mineral in 51 newborn infants. In preterm light-for-gestational-age infants total body bone mineral was 12.6 g v.s. 25.6 g in preterm appropriate-for-gestational-age infants (p less than 0.05). In term light-for-gestational-age infants total body bone mineral was 41.4 g v. 84.2 g in term appropriate-for-gestational-age infants (p less than 0.001). The correlations between gestational age and total body bone mineral was best described by exponential regression lines.

Osteoporosis and the Marfan syndrome.

Fourteen patients with Marfan syndrome, defined according to present criteria, had bone mineral content of the distal forearm measured by single photon absorptiometry. Patients were matched for age and sex with a large local group of healthy volunteers. While further work is needed with other methods of densitometry with measurements at other sites, our results provide no evidence that there is an increased incidence of osteoporosis in Marfan syndrome. Previous reports of an association were probably due to incorrect clinical diagnosis or confusion with clinically similar syndromes known to ca

Peripheral bone densitometry: an old friend revisited.

The earliest assessments of bone "mass" involved metacarpal morphometry that provided insight into age-related changes, the effects of low habitual dietary calcium intake, and the effects of estrogen deficiency and replacement. Single photon absorptiometry (SPA) made quantitative mass measurement possible but this was intellectually unsatisfactory since osteoporotic fractures are more of a concern at the spine and hip than at the wrist. Necessity forced the development of axial bone mass measurement (dual photon absorptiometry--DPA, dual energy xray absorptiometry--DXA, quantitative computed t

Quantitative assessment of areal bone mineral density using multi-energy localizer radiographs from photon-counting detector CT.

Objective. To assess the accuracy and stability of areal bone-mineral-density (aBMD) measurements from multi-energy CT localizer radiographs acquired using photon-counting detector (PCD) CT.Approach.A European Spine Phantom (ESP) with hydroxyapatite (HA 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g cm-2) was scanned using clinical PCD-CT and a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to compare aBMD values. To assess aBMD stability and reproducibility, PCD-localizers were acquired twice a day for one week, and once per week for five weeks. Multiple ESP anteroposterior thicknesses (18, 26, 34, and 40 cm) were achieved using

Assessment of metabolic bone diseases by quantitative computed tomography.

Advances in the radiologic sciences have permitted the development of numerous noninvasive techniques for measuring the mineral content of bone, with varying degrees of precision, accuracy, and sensitivity. The techniques of standard radiography, radiogrammetry, photodensitometry, Compton scattering, neutron activation analysis, single and dual photon absorptiometry, and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) are described and reviewed in depth. Results from previous cross-sectional and longitudinal QCT investigations are given. They then describe a current investigation in which they studied

Radiologic diagnosis of osteoporosis. Current methods and perspectives.

Osteoporosis is defined as a decrease in bone mass accompanied by structural changes, leading to an increase in fracture propensity. Early diagnosis of osteoporosis, fracture risk prediction, and assessment of efficacy of therapy therefore are of great interest. A number of noninvasive techniques are available for measuring bone mass at multiple sites of the skeleton. This article reviews basic methodology and developments in radiology such as x-ray and photon absorptiometry and quantitative computed tomography, which are routinely used in clinical practice. Recent techniques for assessment of

Functional biomechanics of the thoracolumbar vertebral cortex.

Studies were conducted on human cadaver thoracolumbar vertebrae, at the T12-L5 level, of five males and six females. Isolated vertebral bodies, free of posterior elements, were first scanned using dual photon absorptiometry and then underwent axial compressive loading. All of the vertebral bodies failed as a result of compressive fractures of the bone. Results indicated that the mechanical load-deflection response was non-linear and biphasic. The mean cross-sectional areas of the vertebral bodies progressively increased from L1, to L5. The maximum load carrying capacity was not dependent upon

Factors affecting bone mineral density in elderly men receiving chronic in-center hemodialysis.

Twenty-five elderly men receiving chronic hemodialysis had measurements of their bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-photon absorptiometry (DPA). Loss of BMD was much more pronounced in femoral necks than in lumbar vertebrae. Stepwise multiple liner-regression analysis showed that low BMD was associated with 1) hypoalbuminemia, hypermagnesemia, hyperaluminemia, and high serum alkaline phosphatase for femoral necks and 2) hypercalcemia and hypermagnesemia for lumbar vertebrae. These observations suggest that the femoral neck is the preferred site for measurement of BMD in dialysis patients. Alon

Comparative analysis of bone density measurement techniques: a systematic review of quantitative ultrasound and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone-related parameters are essential for osteoporosis detection. Different screening modalities are used, including quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). This systematic review aimed to evaluate the correlation and clinical utility of DXA and QUS measurements. METHODS: A literature search (2005-2025) was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library for English-language studies. A narrative synthesis was performed to summarize the study characteristics and outcomes. RES

Clinical justification for osteoporosis investigation: transitioning from opportunistic to diagnostic referrals from alternative forms of imaging.

Clinical justification remains fundamental to the safe use of imaging involving ionising radiation, requiring a favourable balance between diagnostic benefit and stochastic risk. Concurrently, advances in imaging technology and artificial intelligence have enabled opportunistic identification of additional pathologies beyond the primary indication for imaging. This opinion article discusses how emerging opportunistic osteoporosis detection technologies may eventually transition into clinically justified diagnostic pathways in their own right.

Pathogenesis, assessment, and management of bone loss in axial spondyloarthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) presents a complex scenario where both new bone formation in entheseal tissues and significant trabecular bone loss coexist, emphasizing the intricate nature of bone dynamics in this context. METHODS: A search of the literature was conducted to compose a narrative review exploring the pathogenesis, possible assessment methods, and potential management options for axSpA. RESULTS: While chronic systemic and local inflammation contribute to bone loss, the mechanisms behind axSpA-associated bone loss exhibit distinct characteristics influenced by fac

Atypical iron storage in marine brown algae: a multidisciplinary study of iron transport and storage in Ectocarpus siliculosus.

Iron is an essential element for all living organisms due to its ubiquitous role in redox and other enzymes, especially in the context of respiration and photosynthesis. The iron uptake and storage systems of terrestrial/higher plants are now reasonably well understood, with two basic strategies for iron uptake being distinguished: strategy I plants use a mechanism involving induction of Fe(III)-chelate reductase (ferrireductase) and Fe(II) transporter proteins, while strategy II plants utilize high-affinity, iron-specific, binding compounds called phytosiderophores. In contrast, little is kno

Effects of local point source polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination on bone mineral density in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus).

A former local source of PCBs has contaminated soil and the terrestrial food web at Saglek, Labrador. The relationship between PCB exposure and bone mineral density as an osteoporosis biomarker in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) was investigated at two sites at Saglek: a contaminated Beach and a reference area. Bone mineral density was measured on the femur of twenty-six deer mice using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technology. Bone mineral density was significantly lower in deer mice from the high exposure site (average whole body summation operatorPCB=5769 ng/g wet weight, n=20)

A skeleton in a huff: insights in etiologies of osteosclerosis.

A 30-yr-old man developed right lower leg pain and a palpable solid mass. Radiographic imaging revealed a periosteal reaction with an exostotic mass arising from the right distal fibula. Generalized skeletal osteosclerosis with periosteal reaction was discovered on a radiographic skeletal survey. A biopsy of the right fibular mass revealed reactive woven bone. The patient was referred to a metabolic bone disease clinic, where laboratory values were consistent with secondary hyperparathyroidism and increased bone turnover. A DXA bone density scan revealed high bone density, with an L1-4 spine Z

Bone Mineral Measurements.

The accurate measurement of bone mineral density using noninvasive methods can be of value in the detection and evaluation of primary and secondary causes of decreased bone mass. This includes primary osteoporosis and secondary disorders, such as hyperparathyroidism, osteomalacia, multiple myeloma, diffuse metastases, and glucocorticoid therapy or intrinsic excess.By far, the largest patient population is that encompassed by primary osteoporosis with increased susceptibility to fractures in the absence of other recognizable causes of bone loss.Primary osteoporosis is a common clinical disorder
