Heat moisture treatment modifies amaranth, quinoa, and taro starches via reorganizing granular architecture and driving aggregation.

Amaranth, quinoa, and taro starches have very small granule sizes, which are desirable in certain applications. Heat-moisture treatment (HMT) could modify their properties by changing the granular architecture but maintain the technical advantages related to small granule size. The study intended to investigate how starch structure modulated the diverse HMT modifications. The results suggested that, beyond the granular size, both amylose and amylopectin played important roles in the HMT modification of starch. Upon HMT, amylose might strengthen the packing of starch granules via interacting wi

Cytokinin activity of N6-benzyladenine derivatives assayed by interaction with the receptors in planta, in vitro, and in silico.

Biological effects of hormones in both plants and animals are based on high-affinity interaction with cognate receptors resulting in their activation. The signal of cytokinins, classical plant hormones, is perceived in Arabidopsis by three homologous membrane receptors: AHK2, AHK3, and CRE1/AHK4. To study the cytokinin-receptor interaction, we used 25 derivatives of potent cytokinin N6-benzyladenine (BA) with substituents in the purine heterocycle and/or in the side chain. The study was focused primarily on individual cytokinin receptors from Arabidopsis. The main in planta assay system was ba

Synthesis and herbicidal activity of 3-substituted toxoflavin analogs.

We investigated the synthesis and herbicidal activity of 23 toxoflavin analogs, 1a-w, in which aromatic rings (R) were introduced into the C-3 position. In paddy field conditions, 1k (R=2-CF3-C6H4) and 1w (R=2-thienyl) showed excellent herbicidal activity. Under upland field conditions, we found that toxoflavin analogs 1a (R=C6H5), 1n (R=2-CH3O-C6H4), and 1p (R=4-CH3O-C6H4) exhibited wide herbicidal spectrum against Echinochloa crus-galli (L) var. crus-galli (ECHCG), Chenopodium album, and Amaranthus viridis (AMAVI). The analog with the 2-fluoro group on benzene ring 1b also showed high herbic

Comparative proteomics of amaranth and quinoa seeds reveals species-specific solubility traits of 11S globulins after Osborne and polarity-based extractions.

Amaranth and quinoa are nutritious grains rich in essential amino acids, vitamins, and phytochemicals. The use of these emergent functional foods is still limited and their proteins are poorly characterized. Here, we compared amaranth and quinoa seeds by profiling their proteins using Osborne and polarity-based extraction methods and evaluating their relative protein content. The Osborne fractions and the two fractions generated by the polarity-based method (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) were quantified and analyzed by 1D-SDS-PAGE in the absence and presence of a reducing agent, as well as by d

Evolution of multiple resistance under long-term herbicide exposure reshapes Mediterranean perennial agroecosystems.

Decades of intensive herbicide use in perennial cropping systems have imposed substantial environmental pressures and accelerated the evolution of herbicide-resistant weed populations. In Andalusia (southern Spain), citrus and olive orchards rely heavily on glyphosate and other herbicide modes of action, resulting in chronic ecosystem exposure, declining herbicide efficacy, and increasing chemical inputs. We surveyed ten dominant weed species across eleven orchards to characterize resistance patterns and investigate underlying physiological mechanisms relevant to environmental persistence and

Discovery of Natural Rosin-Based Herbicide Agent to Control Echinochloa crusgalli for Sustainable Weed Management.

Natural rosin derivatives offer a promising scaffold for developing low-toxicity herbicides to address environmental concerns triggered by synthetic agrochemicals. In this research, a series of dehydroabietyl-hydrazide-based derivatives (3a-l) were synthesized using dehydroabietic acid as a lead compound. The herbicidal activities of these derivatives were evaluated against Echinochloa crusgalli, Sorghum halepense, Portulaca oleracea, and Amaranthus caudatus L. weeds. The result indicated that 3e exhibited broad-spectrum activity, particularly against barnyard grass root growth, with 91.0% inh

Insertion of antihypertensive peptides in acidic subunit from amaranth 11S induces contrasting effects in stability.

The insertion of peptides is a biotechnology tool widely used to improve the nutraceutical properties of proteins. Because the effect of these insertions in protein stability and function is difficult to predict, it should be determined experimentally. In this study, we created two variants of amarantin acidic subunit and analyzed them along with other four proteins reported previously. We measured their response against two destabilizing agents: temperature and urea. The six proteins presented the insertion of antihypertensive peptides (VYVYVYVY or RIPP) in the variable regions of the protein

Can biochar and phytoextractors be jointly used for cadmium remediation?

Phytoremediation of soils contaminated with cadmium was tested after liming (CaO) or biochar addition, using red amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.) as test plant species. Two biochars with contrasting characteristics were prepared from two feedstocks and added to the soil at a rate of 3% (w:w): Eucalyptus pyrolysed at 600°C (EB) and poultry litter at 400°C (PLB). Liming was carried out in two treatments (CaO1) and (CaO2) to the same pH as the treatments EB and PLB respectively. Total plant mass increased in soils amended with PLB and with a mixture of PLB and EB; however this was not sufficient

Phytotoxic volatilome from the endophytic fungus Hypoxylon anthochroum strain Smeg4: Temporal dynamics and mitochondrial disruption as a promising herbicidal mechanism.

This study provides a comprehensive temporal characterization of the volatilome produced by the endophyte Hypoxylon anthochroum Smeg4 and evaluates its phytotoxic activity against four weed species. VOCs diversity and abundance were contingent on culture age, following four distinct metabolic phases (Groups 1-4). During the preliminary stage (days 1-2, Group 1), monoterpenes predominated with low diversity (11-17 compounds). A chemical shift occurred on day 3 (Group 2), followed by the prevalence of eucalyptol and the first detection of esters, such as ethyl ethanoate, on day 4. Peak metabolic

[Effects of adding basalt powder on organic carbon sequestration in red and yellow-brown soils under earthworm inoculation].

The enhanced weathering technology of basalt can promote the fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the form of carbonates/bicarbonates in soils. Earthworms can promote mineral weathering, further contributing to carbon fixation. In this study, we selected red and yellow-brown soil as research subjects and set up three treatments [i.e., control (CK), adding basalt powder (B), and adding basalt powder and inoculating earthworms simu-ltaneously (BE)], and explored the impact and potential mechanisms of earthworm-mediated basalt weathering on Amaranthus tricolor growth, soil respiration, micro

Safety risk analysis of high dosage of phosphogypsum in limestone soil and yellow soil: a case study of potted amaranth.

The safe management and sustainable utilization of phosphogypsum (PG) tailings in Guizhou, China, represent a pressing issue. High dosage incorporation of PG into karst soil has emerged as a promising approach. This method not only addresses the long-term storage issue of substantial PG tailings but also has the potential to enhance soil fertility. However, its safety risks to soil and food chain remain unclear. Through pot experiments, we incorporated 10-20% PG into limestone soil and yellow soil from the Karst region. The findings indicated significant increases in soil organic carbon (from

Under controlled conditions, lower concentrations of aqueous extracts of Acroptilon repens are needed to inhibit seed germination and seedling growth of weeds than crops.

Preventing weeds from hindering agricultural production often relies on chemical inputs; however, these inputs can be ineffective, increase costs, or harm the environment. Natural products, particularly plant extracts, are being explored as potential sources for developing eco-friendly bioherbicides that replace or reduce the use of chemical herbicides. In this study, we examined to what degree aqueous extract from the allelopathic weed Acroptilon repens L. (Russian knapweed) was able to influence seed germination and seedling growth metrics in vitro. Uniquely, our study compared the impacts o
