First described case of human granulocytic anaplasmosis in a patient in Eastern Austria.

A 64-year-old otherwise healthy patient presented with high fever, thrombocytopenia, elevated liver enzymes and an erythema on the belly. The patient remembered a tick bite four weeks ago when walking with his dog before the specific symptoms started. A meningococcal disease or hematological illness was excluded. The serological results for tick-borne diseases showed a high IgG antibody titer for Anaplasma phagocytophila. All symptoms and laboratory parameters normalized after one week of hospitalization. The patient received no treatment and recovered completely. This is the first confirmed c

Lyme disease followed by human granulocytic anaplasmosis in a kidney transplant recipient.

We report the case of a kidney transplant recipient who developed Lyme disease, followed by human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) 3 years later. A review of all previously published cases of Lyme disease (3 cases), HGA (5 cases), and human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) (5 cases) in transplant recipients is presented. Manifestations of the cases reviewed were similar to those of non-transplant patients. There appeared to be no obvious correlation between immunosuppression and the occurrence of the illness in the transplant recipients. Serologic testing failed to make a diagnosis in 1 patient wit

The cost of anaplasmosis in the Red River Plains and south-east areas of Louisiana.

Losses from morbidity and mortality due to anaplasmosis were assessed in beef and dairy cattle of the Red River Plains and south-east areas of Louisiana. The cost of treatment and prevention of anaplasmosis and losses in milk production and those due to deaths or culling were valued at $0.5 million for the year 1983 in these two areas. The cost of prevention included the use of tetracyclines in feed and salt-mineral supplements, injectable tetracycline, vaccination and an estimated 10% of the cost of insecticidal ear tags, sprays, pour-on applications and dust bags. The remainder of these cost

Bovine anaplasmosis: elimination of the carrier state with injectable long-acting oxytetracycline.

Long-acting oxytetracycline was administered intramuscularly (20 mg/kg) at 3-day intervals to each of 16 naturally infected Anaplasma marginale carrier beef cows; 8 of the 16 cows were given 3 injections and the other 8 cows were given 4 injections. Four cows seropositive for A marginale served as untreated controls. Rapid card agglutination and complement fixation tests were performed 5 times during the 130-day posttreatment period. All treated cows became negative to both serologic procedures, whereas control cows remained seropositive. Three splenectomized calves that received pooled blood

The use of spleen antigen in the tube agglutination test for diagnosis of anaplasmosis in cattle.

An antigen was prepared from the spleen of an infected bovine calf and was used in the tube agglutination test. Cases having rare and very low parasitaemia as well as the carrier cases were detected by this procedure and no non-specific reaction was observed with other haemoprotozoan infections. The maximum titre obtained with the Anplasma positive sera was 1:20, about 60 per cent showed a titre of 1:10 and 90 per cent showed a titre of 1:5 or more. The test provided satisfactory results in detecting the cases even at the early phase of the infection. The test also proved useful in judging the

Ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and hepatozoonosis in dogs from St. Kitts, West Indies.

BACKGROUND: Although tick-borne diseases are important causes of morbidity and mortality in dogs in tropical areas, there is little information on the agents causing these infections in the Caribbean. METHODOLOGY: We used PCRs to test blood from a cross-section of dogs on St Kitts for Ehrlichia (E.) canis, Babesia (B.) spp., Anaplasma (A.) spp. and Hepatozoon (H.) spp. Antibodies against E. canis and A. phagocytophilum/platys were detected using commercial immunochromatography tests. Records of the dogs were examined retrospectively to obtain clinical and laboratory data. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

Anaplasmosis in a 73-Year-Old Male From South Florida: A Case Report.

Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne illness transmitted by the Ixodes scapularis tick in the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States. Clinical symptoms of anaplasmosis can be non-specific, which may delay the diagnosis. This is a case of a 73-year-old male from South Florida who initially presented with non-specific febrile illness to an urgent care and was initially treated for a viral infection. Persistent febrile episodes prompted presentation to the emergency room. Initial findings of pancytopenia and fever worsened after the initiation of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Upon further histo

Clinically differential diagnosis of human granulocytic anaplasmosis and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome.

This study analyzed HGA and SFTS in patients with suspected tick-borne infection by focusing on key differences that clinicians can easily recognize. A retrospective analysis was performed on confirmed patients with HGA or SFTS in 21 Korean hospitals from 2013 to 2020. A scoring system was developed by multivariate regression analysis and accuracy assessment of clinically easily discriminable parameters was performed. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that sex (especially male sex) (odds ratio [OR] 11.45, P = 0.012), neutropenia (< 1500) (OR 41.64, P < 0.001), prolonged ac

Splenomegaly, Non-Traumatic Splenic Rupture, and Pancytopenia in Patient with Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis.

BACKGROUND: Splenic rupture is a well-described complication of babesiosis but is rarely associated with anaplasmosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 37-year-old man with no significant past medical history who presented with malaise, myalgias, arthralgias and severe left upper quadrant pain. He was found to have splenic rupture secondary to infection by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. He reported a single tick bite the week prior to onset of his symptoms. On presentation, he was found to have left upper quadrant abdominal tenderness, pancytopenia, and splenomegaly with evidence of splen

Differences and similarities between culture-confirmed human granulocytic anaplasmosis and early lyme disease.

Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of certain Ixodes ticks, which can also transmit Anaplasma phagocytophilum, the cause of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). Although culture can be used to identify patients infected with A. phagocytophilum and is the microbiologic gold standard, few studies have evaluated culture-confirmed patients with HGA. We conducted a prospective study in which blood culture was used to detect HGA infection in patients with a compatible clinical illness. Early Lyme disease was defined by the presence of erythema migrans. The epidemiologic, clinical, and laborat

Tick-borne diseases of cattle in Paraguay. II. Immunisation against anaplasmosis and babesiosis.

A total of 102 susceptible adult Holstein Friesian cattle imported into an area of Paraguay where anaplasmosis and babesiosis are endemic were immunised by infection with Anaplasma centrale and attenuated forms of Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis obtained from Uruguay. The results indicated that the attenuated forms of both Babesia species protected cattle against heterologous field challenge whereas A. centrale did not invariably confer sufficient protection against a field challenge of A. marginale.

[Tick-borne disease in a backpacker in French Guiana: one case of presumed anaplasmosis].

INTRODUCTION: New species of Borrelia, Rickettsia, and Anaplasma have recently been detected in ticks in French Guiana. Additionally, a new species of Anaplasma was discovered in a human. Specific genovariants of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia have also been identified in the Amazonian forest of French Guiana, indicating a specific sylvatic cycle. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a patient who experienced fever, myalgia, rash, and inoculation eschars following dozens of tick bites while hiking in the Amazon rainforest. Laboratory results showed lymphopenia, neutrophilia, hepatic cytolysis a

Anaplasma phagocytophilum Encephalitis: A Case Report and Literature Review of Neurologic Manifestations of Anaplasmosis.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligate intracellular, Gram-negative pathogen, causative agent of Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis (HGA). HGA usually manifests as a non-specific febrile illness, accompanied by evidence of leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, and an alteration in liver enzymes. Neurologic manifestations of anaplasmosis are rare and rarely reported. We describe a 62-year-old man who developed encephalitis due to an Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection. The patient favorably responded to intravenous doxycycline and recovered without neurological sequela. In the tick endemic area, clinici

Description of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis outbreaks in northern Uruguay between 2016 and 2018.

Bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis cause important economic losses in livestock production. In Uruguay, the main aetiological agents of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis are Babesia bovis, B. bigemina and Anaplasma marginale. The aim of this work was to describe the outbreaks of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in northern Uruguay between 2016 and 2018. Convenience sampling was carried out. We worked with blood and organ samples from bovines with clinical signs and autopsy findings compatible with babesiosis and anaplasmosis. A total of 140 presumptive outbreaks were studied. Epidemiologica

Development of a real-time PCR method for rapid diagnosis of canine babesiosis and anaplasmosis.

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis and anaplasmosis, caused by Babesia canis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, respectively, are significant tick-borne diseases in Baltic countries. Both diseases can be diagnosed on the basis of clinicopathological findings, by direct pathogen detection in blood smears or by indirect pathogen detection; however, because of high selectivity and specificity, molecular methods may be advantageous. The goal of this study was to develop a duplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method for the detection of B. canis and A. phagocytophilum in canine clinical sampl

A review of the history of research and control of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, babesiosis and anaplasmosis in Uruguay.

In Uruguay, control of Rhipicephalus microplus began in 1910. In 1941 the eradication of R. micoplus throughout the country was declared mandatory, although this attempt was unsuccessful. Since 2008 the country was divided into two regions: the south-western region, which is free of ticks; and a region of tick control that includes all departments to the north of the Rio Negro and five departments in the eastern region. In Uruguay, investigations on R. microplus, babesiosis and anaplasmosis started in 1921, and in the 1970s, studies of the epidemiology of R. microplus determined that from 2 to
