Contactless Acoustic Trapping of Hoverflies for Behavioral Studies.

Studying the sensorimotor response of flying insects is usually done in tethered conditions. The righting reflex, for example, is studied with insects that are released either from a rigid or a magnetic tether. The attached tether or magnet may, however, induce proprioceptive biases and behavioral artifacts through physical contact and additional mass or inertia. Here, we propose a contactless tether apparatus based on acoustic levitation. It relies on the emission of ultrasonic waves on both sides of the device, creating standing pressure waves-visualized using the schlieren technique-that en

Right ventricular failure in pulmonary hypertension: recent insights from experimental models.

Right ventricular (RV) function is a critical determinant of the prognosis of patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Upon establishment of PH, RV dysfunction develops, leading to a gradual worsening of the condition over time, culminating in RV failure and premature mortality. Despite this understanding, the underlying mechanisms of RV failure remain obscure. As a result, there are currently no approved therapies specifically targeting the right ventricle. One contributing factor to the lack of RV-directed therapies is the complexity of the pathogenesis of RV failure as observed in animal

Etiology of cerebral vasospasm in primates.

A primate model was used to determine whether oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb), methemoglobin (MetHb), or bilirubin is likely to be responsible for cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Forty cynomolgus monkeys were randomly assigned to one of five groups. On Day 0, each animal underwent angiography followed by right craniectomy and placement of an Ommaya reservoir with its catheter adjacent to the right middle cerebral artery (MCA). The animals received intrathecal injections twice a day for 6 days of one of the following solutions: mock cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); OxyHb; MetHb; bil

[Artificial Inversion of the Left-Right Visceral Asymmetry in Vertebrates: Conceptual Approaches and Experimental Solutions].

Externally, vertebrates are bilaterally symmetrical; however, left-right asymmetry is observed in the structure of their internal organs and systems of organs (circulatory, digestive, and respiratory). In addition to the asymmetry of internal organs (visceral), there is also functional (i.e., asymmetrical functioning of organs on the left and right sides of the body) and behavioral asymmetry. The question of a possible association between different types of asymmetry is still open. The study of the mechanisms of such association, in addition to the fundamental interest, has important applicati

Populations and personalities.

The question of personality in nonhuman animals has loomed large in the study of animal behavior. This issue's featured article assessed the possibility that different environments generate different patterns of personality. Roy and Bhat (2018) studied common measures of personality in two populations of wild zebrafish, Danio rerio. Roy and Bhat's studies support the hypothesis that personality will depend in part on the populations being studied and the environmental variation experienced by individuals in those populations. Populations differing in their exposure to predation should be expec

Percutaneous transatrial access to the pericardial space for epicardial mapping and ablation.

BACKGROUND: Puncture of the atrial appendage may provide access to the pericardial space. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of epicardial mapping and ablation through an endocardial transatrial access in a swine model. METHODS AND RESULTS: An 8-F Mullins sheath was used to perforate the right (n=16) or left (n=1) atrial appendage in 17 pigs (median weight, 27.5 kg; first and third quartiles [Q1, Q3], 25.2, 30.0 kg). A 7-F ablation catheter was introduced into the pericardial space to perform epicardial mapping and deliver radiofrequency pulses on the atria. The pericardial

Metabolic changes contribute to maladaptive right ventricular hypertrophy in pulmonary hypertension beyond pressure overload: an integrative imaging and omics investigation.

Right ventricular (RV) failure remains the strongest determinant of survival in pulmonary hypertension (PH). We aimed to identify relevant mechanisms, beyond pressure overload, associated with maladaptive RV hypertrophy in PH. To separate the effect of pressure overload from other potential mechanisms, we developed in pigs two experimental models of PH (M1, by pulmonary vein banding and M2, by aorto-pulmonary shunting) and compared them with a model of pure pressure overload (M3, pulmonary artery banding) and a sham-operated group. Animals were assessed at 1 and 8 months by right heart cathete

A Murine Model of Pressure Overload-Induced Right Ventricular Hypertrophy and Failure by Pulmonary Trunk Banding.

Right ventricular (RV) failure caused by pressure overload is strongly associated with morbidity and mortality in a number of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. The pathogenesis of RV failure is complex and remains inadequately understood. To identify new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of RV failure, robust and reproducible animal models are essential. Models of pulmonary trunk banding (PTB) have gained popularity, as RV function can be assessed independently of changes in the pulmonary vasculature. In this paper, we present a murine model of RV pressure overload induced by PTB i

Reduced sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) load mediates impaired contractile reserve in right ventricular pressure overload.

Myocardial contractile reserve is significantly attenuated in patients with advanced heart failure. The aim of this study was to identify mechanisms of impaired contractile reserve in a large animal model that closely mimics human myocardial failure. Progressive right ventricular hypertrophy and failure were induced by banding the pulmonary artery in kittens. Isometric contractile force was measured in right ventricular trabeculae (n=115) from age-matched Control and Banded feline hearts. Rapid cooling contractures (RCC) were used to determine sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca(2+) load while asse

[Ethics in Swiss equestrian sports: Is animal welfare adequately implemented?].

Animal welfare in equestrian sports is a very current and important topic for animal right groups as well as for the Swiss association for equestrian sports "Schweizerischer Verband für Pferdesport (SVPS)". The penalty commission "Sanktionskomission (SAKO)" of the SVPS reported only few to none cases of infringements of animal welfare provision on horses at a time in the past few years. This fact was criticised several times by different animal right groups in Switzerland. Therefore a survey was sent in 2017 to 544 active officials (horse show judges) of the SVPS. Overall, 146 answered questio

Venlafaxine and nortriptyline reverse acute dexamethasone-induced depressive-like behaviors in male and female mice.

Major depression can be triggered by stressful events that promote deregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response and, in some circumstances, persistent elevation of circulating glucocorticoid levels. Animal models are widely used to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the etiology and treatment of major depression. However, to mimic the dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in rodents, animals should be exposed to sustained physical and psychological stressful situations. These animal models of depression are labor intensive and impact individual anim

Discounting multiple benefits of cat containment by reframing them as trade-offs: Response to Glanville et al. (2025).

Domestic cats (Felis catus) are favoured companion animals, but also highly effective predators that have caused substantial declines and extinctions of native fauna in many places where they have been introduced. In Australia, free-roaming pet cats kill hundreds of millions of native animals annually, contributing to one of the world's most severe modern extinction crises. In response, policy, advocacy and public messaging has increasingly promoted responsible pet cat management, including containment, on the multiple grounds of biodiversity protection, public amenity, disease spread reductio

Atrial compliance changes in animal total artificial heart recipients.

Right atrial compliance of chronically implanted total artificial heart animals was calculated from the pressure-volume relationships acquired at autopsy and compared with those of a control animal. The chronically implanted animals showed right atrial dilatation and low compliance. Even though atrial dilatation and decreased compliance have an opposite direct effect on atrial pressures, these changes may, in turn, disturb stretch-dependent volume regulatory processes, resulting in high atrial pressure.

[The role of individual characteristics and learning in the manifestation of motor asymmetry in rats].

Relative role was studied of the "initial" preference (caused by animals individual properties) and learning in real preference of one limb in rats. After a short-time learning to get food from a narrow horizontal pipe only by the left paw a retrograde amnesia was evoked in rats. At preference determination after three weeks, in conditions which allowed to get food by any paw, in the group of animals without amnesia the number of the left-handed rats was 5.7 times more than of the right-handed ones. In the group of animals with amnesia the numbers of the left-handed, right-handed and ambidextr

Intermittent Fasting Enhances Right Ventricular Function in Preclinical Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Background Intermittent fasting (IF) confers pleiotropic cardiovascular benefits including restructuring of the gut microbiome and augmentation of cellular metabolism. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare and lethal disease characterized by right ventricular (RV) mitochondrial dysfunction and resultant lipotoxicity and microbiome dysbiosis. However, the effects of IF on RV function in PAH are unexplored. Therefore, we investigated how IF altered gut microbiota composition, RV function, and survival in the monocrotaline model of PAH. Methods and Results Male Sprague Dawley rats were

Ambulatory 7-day mechanical circulatory support in sheep model of pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Right heart failure is the major cause of death in pulmonary hypertension. Lung transplantation is the only long-term treatment option for patients who fail medical therapy. Due to the scarcity of donor lungs, there is a critical need to develop durable mechanical support for the failing right heart. A major design goal for durable support is to reduce the size and complexity of devices to facilitate ambulation. Toward this end, we sought to deploy wearable mechanical support technology in a sheep disease model of chronic right heart failure. METHODS: In 6 sheep with chronic right

Asymmetry of skeletal effects of Dominant hemimelia.

BACKGROUND: Dominant hemimelia (Dh) is a dominant mutation that arose spontaneously in mice; Dh animals exhibit reduced numbers of lumbar vertebrae and preaxial hindlimb defects. Absence of spleen occurs in both Dh/+ and Dh/Dh animals. This study was undertaken to characterize asymmetry of skeletal defects in the Dh mouse, specifically hindlimb asymmetries in association with axial defects. METHODS: A total of 29 Dh/+ and 100 +/+ fetuses (gestational day [GD] 18) were identified by phenotype and linked DNA and their skeletons were analyzed. RESULTS: The results revealed an asymmetry of hindl
