Inducing Complete Polyp Regeneration from the Aboral Physa of the Starlet Sea Anemone Nematostella vectensis.

Cnidarians, and specifically Hydra, were the first animals shown to regenerate damaged or severed structures, and indeed such studies arguably launched modern biological inquiry through the work of Trembley more than 250 years ago. Presently the study of regeneration has seen a resurgence using both "classic" regenerative organisms, such as the Hydra, planaria and Urodeles, as well as a widening spectrum of species spanning the range of metazoa, from sponges through mammals. Besides its intrinsic interest as a biological phenomenon, understanding how regeneration works in a variety of species

Physiological impairment and metabolic perturbations in Porites cylindrica induced by Hypnea pannosa contact.

Coral reef ecosystems are undergoing accelerated degradation, characterized by phase shifts marked by declining live coral cover and increasing macroalgal proliferation. However, the long-term metabolic adjustments of corals under chronic macroalgal competition remain poorly understood, particularly regarding the integration of physiological changes with metabolic responses resilience mechanisms. This study conducted a 21-day experiment to investigate the physiological and metabolomic response between coral Porites cylindrica and macroalgae Hypnea pannosa. Key findings revealed that direct phy

Past disturbances and local conditions influence the recovery rates of coral reefs.

Corals are being increasingly subjected to marine heatwaves. Theory suggests that increasing the intensity of disturbances reduces recovery rates, which inspired us to examine the recovery rates of coral cover following marine heatwaves, cyclones, and other disturbances at 1921 study sites, in 58 countries and three oceans, from 1977 to 2020. In the Atlantic Ocean, coral cover has decreased fourfold since the 1970s, and recovery rates following disturbances have been relatively slow, except in the Antilles. By contrast, reefs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have maintained coral cover and rec

Hurricane Irma Linked to Coral Skeletal Density Shifts on the Florida Keys Reef Tract.

Coral reefs are at risk due to various global and local anthropogenic stressors that impact the health of reef ecosystems worldwide. The most recent climate models predict that climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of tropical storms. This increased storm occurrence and strength will likely compromise coral reef structures and habitats for reef-dwelling organisms, including across the Florida Keys Reef Tract (FKRT), the most extensive tropical reef system along the US coast. While several recent studies reveal the chronic impacts of tropical storms on corals, relatively litt

Oasis of the deep: Cold-water corals of the South China Sea.

Cold-water coral (CWC) communities are biodiversity hotspots on the world's deep seafloor. Although deep-sea corals in the South China Sea (SCS) have been reported before, they are only sporadic. A comprehensive and systematic understanding of the CWC in the SCS would forge the basis for future protection. Here we conducted the first systematic survey on the CWCs in the following six broad-scale sub-regions, from the northwest and northeast slopes to the seamounts in the western and central basins of the SCS, through twenty-four dives of the human-occupied vehicle ShenhaiYongshi. Statistical a

Assessment of marine litter interactions with urban coral reefs in Okinawa, Japan.

This study assessed different reef zones (lagoon, reef crest, reef slope) in three urban locations around Okinawa Island (Mizugama, Ginowan, Sunabe) and two marine protected areas around nearby Aka Island (Hizushi, Sakubaru) for marine litter pollution and litter interactions with reef organisms. A total reef area of 2250 m2 was surveyed by scuba diving, and 46 marine litter items were recorded. Litter density ranged from 0.01 to 0.05 items/m2, and plastics (76.09 %) and metals (15.22 %) were the most common litter types. The substrates for litter items were live corals (52.17 %), followed by

Efficient Photothermal Sensor Based on Coral-Like Hollow Gold Nanospheres for the Sensitive Detection of Sulfonamides.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), universally regarded as colorimetric signal reporters, are widely employed in lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs). However, it is difficult for AuNPs-LFIA to achieve a wide range and sensitive detection. Herein, novel coral-like hollow gold nanospheres (CHGNPs) are synthesized. The growth of gold nanospheres can be regulated to obtain a multibranched and hollow construction. The obtained CHGNPs possess intense broadband absorption across the visible to near-infrared region, exhibiting a high molar extinction coefficient of 14.65 × 1011 M-1 cm-1 and a photothermal conv

Legacy effects of anthropogenic disturbances modulate dynamics in the world's coral reefs.

Rapidly changing conditions alter disturbance patterns, highlighting the need to better understand how the transition from pulse disturbances to more persistent stress will impact ecosystem dynamics. We conducted a global analysis of the impacts of 11 types of disturbances on reef integrity using the rate of change of coral cover as a measure of damage. Then, we evaluated how the magnitude of the damage due to thermal stress, cyclones, and diseases varied among tropical Atlantic and Indo-Pacific reefs and whether the cumulative impact of thermal stress and cyclones was able to modulate the res

Oxygenated Cembrane Diterpenes from the South China Sea Soft Coral Sinularia tumulosa.

The chemical investigation of the rarely studied soft coral Sinularia tumulosa resulted in the discovery of five oxygenated cembrane diterpenes 1-5, including two new compounds situmulins A (1) and B (2). The structures of 1 and 2 were established through the extensive analyses of 1D and 2D NMR spectral data together with the comparisons with the known compounds. Furthermore, the absolute configuration of 1 was determined by the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) ECD approach, while the relative configuration of 2 was assigned via the quantum mechanical-NMR (QM-NMR) calculations.

Size-weight relationships for estimating harvestable biomass of Acropora corals on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Although hard corals (order Scleractinia) are listed in Appendix II of the Convention for the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), there is significant ongoing wild harvest and international trade, mostly for the aquarium industry. Acropora corals account for the majority of aquarium corals harvested and traded, but are also extremely vulnerable to fisheries-independent threats, especially climate-induced coral bleaching. Reconciling effects of coral harvesting is complicated as harvest limits are based on weight, while there is limited data on standing biomass of Acropora from d

Sarcoelegans A-H, eight undescribed cembranes with anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic activities from the South China Sea soft coral Sarcophyton elegans.

Chemical investigation of the South China Sea soft coral Sarcophyton elegans has led to the isolation of eight undescribed cembranes, namely sarcoelegans A-H. Their structures and absolute configurations were unambiguously established by extensive analyses of spectroscopic data, X-ray diffraction, QM-NMR, and TDDFT-ECD calculations. Sarcoelegan A is composed of the rare tricyclo [11.2.1.0] hexadecane carbon framework which is the third compound of this scaffold. Sarcoelegan B and sarcoelegan C possess an unusual seven-membered ether ring, and (±)-sarcoelegan D has a seven-membered ring with th

Litoarbolide A: an undescribed sesquiterpenoid from the Red Sea soft coral Litophyton arboreum with an in vitro anti-malarial activity evaluation.

Soft corals distributed across the Red Sea coasts are a rich source of diverse and bioactive natural products. Chemical probing of the Red Sea soft coral Litophyton arboreum led to isolation and structural characterization of an undescribed sesquiterpenoid, litoarbolide A (1), along with 14 previously reported metabolites (2-15). The chemical structures of the isolates were assigned based on NMR as well as high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) data. Litoarbolide A is supposed to be the biosynthetic precursor to other sesquiterpenoids, which formed via further po

Deep-Sea Coral Garden Invertebrates and Their Associated Fungi Are Genetic Resources for Chronic Disease Drug Discovery.

Chronic diseases characterized by bone and cartilage loss are associated with a reduced ability of progenitor cells to regenerate new tissues in an inflammatory environment. A promising strategy to treat such diseases is based on tissue repair mediated by human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), but therapeutic outcomes are hindered by the absence of small molecules to efficiently modulate cell behaviour. Here, we applied a high-throughput drug screening technology to bioprospect a large library of extracts from Irish deep-sea organisms to induce hMSC differentiation toward musculoskeletal lineag

Effects of future climate on coral-coral competition.

As carbon dioxide (CO2) levels increase, coral reefs and other marine systems will be affected by the joint stressors of ocean acidification (OA) and warming. The effects of these two stressors on coral physiology are relatively well studied, but their impact on biotic interactions between corals are poorly understood. While coral-coral interactions are less common on modern reefs, it is important to document the nature of these interactions to better inform restoration strategies in the face of climate change. Using a mesocosm study, we evaluated whether the combined effects of ocean acidific

Estimations of densities of marine litter on the fringing reefs of Mayotte (France - South Western Indian Ocean) - impacts on coral communities.

The present study was carried out at 22 stations located on the fringing reefs of the island of Mayotte inside the perimeter of the Marine Natural Park of Mayotte (PNMM). The average assessment of the number of samples of marine litter (ML) collected at these stations was 3.9 ± 1.3 ML per 500 m2 in winter and 3.8 ± 1.1 ML per 500 m2 in summer. Plastic ML was dominant, representing approximately 92% of the litter collected at the stations for the two seasons. The majority was plastic ML from fishing gear (lines, nets etc.). Station 18 presented remarkable average densities of 39 ± 4.2 ML per 50

Ecology, histopathology, and microbial ecology of a white-band disease outbreak in the threatened staghorn coral Acropora cervicornis.

This study is a multi-pronged description of a temperature-induced outbreak of white-band disease (WBD) that occurred in Acropora cervicornis off northern Miami Beach, Florida (USA), from July to October 2014. We describe the ecology of the disease and examine diseased corals using both histopathology and next-generation bacterial 16S gene sequencing, making it possible to better understand the effect this disease has on the coral holobiont, and to address some of the seeming contradictions among previous studies of WBD that employed either a purely histological or molecular approach. Crystal nucleation and growth of spherulites demonstrated by coral skeletons and phase-field simulations.

Spherulites are radial distributions of acicular crystals, common in biogenic, geologic, and synthetic systems, yet exactly how spherulitic crystals nucleate and grow is still poorly understood. To investigate these processes in more detail, we chose scleractinian corals as a model system, because they are well known to form their skeletons from aragonite (CaCO3) spherulites, and because a comparative study of crystal structures across coral species has not been performed previously. We observed that all 12 diverse coral species analyzed here exhibit plumose spherulites in their skeletons, wit

First Identification of Palytoxin-Like Molecules in the Atlantic Coral Species Palythoa canariensis.

Palytoxin (PLTX) is a complex marine toxin produced by Zoanthids (Palyhtoa), dinoflagellates (Ostreopsis), and cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium). Contact with PLTX-like compounds present in aerosols or marine organisms has been associated with adverse effects on humans. The worldwide distribution of producer species and seafood contaminated with PLTX-like molecules illustrates the global threat to human health. The identification of species capable of palytoxin production is critical for human safety. We studied the presence of PLTX analogues in Palythoa canariensis, a coral species collected in t

Settlement patterns of the coral Acropora millepora on sediment-laden surfaces.

Successful recruitment in corals is important for the sustenance of coral reefs, and is considered a demographic bottleneck in the recovery of reef populations following disturbance events. Yet several factors influence larval settlement behaviour, and here we quantified thresholds associated with light attenuation and accumulated sediments on settlement substrates. Sediments deposited on calcareous red algae (CRA) directly and indirectly impacted coral settlement patterns. Although not avoiding direct contact, Acropora millepora larvae were very reluctant to settle on surfaces layered with se

Coral diseases near Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas: patterns and potential drivers.

The number of coral diseases, coral species they infect, number of reported cases, and range over which these diseases are distributed have all increased dramatically in the past 3 decades, posing a serious threat to coral reef ecosystems worldwide. While some published studies provide data on the distribution of coral diseases at local and regional levels, few studies have addressed the factors that may drive these distributions. We recorded coral disease occurrence, prevalence, and severity along with temperature, sedimentation, and coral population data (species abundance and colony size) o
