Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common chronic liver disease, posing public health risks from potential irreversible liver damage. Curcumin (Cur), a polyphenolic compound from Zingiberaceae and Araceae, exhibits antihyperlipidemic and insulin-sensitizing effects. However, its targets and mechanisms in MASLD remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the potential targets and mechanisms by which Cur ameliorates MASLD. Cur markedly improved metabolic disorders and inflammation in rats and reduced intracellular lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells, prim

Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit, belonging to the genus Pinellia in the Araceae family, is globally distributed. The dried tuber of P. ternata has significant medicinal value in traditional Chinese medicine, with a history of usage spanning approximately 2000 years, particularly for alleviating cough and vomiting. However, soft rot disease caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum poses a severe threat to P. ternata plants. This study screened 44 germplasms and identified the disease-resistant Pinellia ternata P-9 and disease-susceptible Pinellia ternata P-15. A de novo transcriptome analysis was c

In our screening for photosensitizers from natural resources, 15(1)-hydroxypurpurin-7-lactone ethyl methyl diester (compound 1) was isolated for the first time from an Araceae plant. To evaluate the efficacy of compound 1 as a photosensitizer for head and neck cancers, compound 1 was studied in reference to a known photosensitizer pheophorbide-a (Pha), in terms of photophysical properties, singlet oxygen generation and in in vitro experiments (intracellular uptake and phototoxicity assays) in two oral (HSC2 and HSC3) and two nasopharyngeal (HK1 and C666-1) cancer cell lines. In this study, com

Flavonoids may mediate UV protection in plants either by screening of harmful radiation or by minimizing the resulting oxidative stress. To help distinguish between these alternatives, more precise knowledge of flavonoid distribution is needed. We used confocal laser scanning microscopy (cLSM) with the "emission fingerprinting" feature to study the cellular and subcellular distribution of flavonoid glucosides in the giant duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza), and investigated the fitness effects of these compounds under natural UV radiation and copper sulphate addition (oxidative stress) using commo

The practicality of a probabilistic ecological hazard assessment (PEHA) methodology using intraspecies endpoint sensitivity distributions (IESDs) and chemical toxicity distributions (CTDs) was evaluated on data sets of pharmaceutical toxicity to aquatic macrophytes. A PEHA does not use an exposure distribution but rather uses a point estimate, which is useful for applications with sufficient effects data but lacking in comprehensive exposure data or when a criterion concentration is desired. The probability of finding an effect measure or potency value below a threshold can be calculated from

Duckweeds (Spirodela polyrrhiza) are free-floating macrophytes that grow profusely in nutrient-rich waters. Under ideal conditions, they exhibit a rapid growth rate and can absorb a substantial amount of nutrients, macromolecules, and pollutants from bodies of water. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized from plant extracts, particularly under stress conditions, have opened new research avenues in the field of nanotechnology. Under salinity stress, the accumulation of flavonoids in duckweeds can affect the structure of ZnO NPs, helping researchers ascertain their antimicrobial role. I

The efficacy of the removal of contaminants from wastewater depends on physico-chemical properties of pollutants and the efficiency of treatment plant. Sometimes, low amounts of toxic compounds can be still present in the treated sewage. In this work we considered the effects of contaminant residues in treated wastewaters and of temperatures on Lemna minor L. Treated effluent waters were collected, analyzed and used as duckweed growth medium. In order to better understand the effects of micropollutants and seasonal variation, the plants were grown under ambient conditions for seven days in sum

BACKGROUND: Poisoning with Dieffenbachia, a member of the Araceae family, poses serious risks, particularly with respect to oral and airway exposure. This case highlights the critical need for precautionary measures, prompt treatment, and continuous observation following such exposure, emphasizing its significant clinical implications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old Ethiopian boy, who was previously healthy and neurodevelopmentally normal, was brought to the pediatric emergency department after inadvertently chewing and swallowing the parts of Dieffenbachia plant. Initially, he had mild symp

Glucomannan is a dietary fiber employed quite frequently in the western countries since two decades now, as its ingestion plays an important role in human health. However, eastern people have used this fiber for more than a thousand years. This dietary fiber is the main polysaccharide obtain from the tubers of the Amorphophallus konjac plant, a member of the family Araceae found in east Asia. The chemical structure of glucomannan consists, mainly, in mannose and glucose in the ratio 8:5 linked by beta (1-->4) glycosidic bonds. This soluble fiber has a extraordinarily high waterholding capacity

Miniaturization, or an extreme reduction in body size, is present in both the plant and animal kingdoms. In animals, this concept has been studied across a range of systems, where it has been associated with the vestigialization or loss of structures such as the reduction of lungs in miniature frogs1 and the loss of body segments in tardigrades.2 By contrast, the morphological mechanisms underlying plant miniaturization remain poorly understood. The Araceae exhibits a striking evolutionary breadth, encompassing both the smallest flowering plants and some of the largest herbaceous species known

Ecological floating beds (EFBs) represent a sustainable, nature-based solution for remediating eutrophic waters, with plant species selection being a critical determinant of treatment performance. This study assessed the remediation potential of three floating macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Ipomoea aquatica under cyanobacterial bloom stress. Results demonstrated that all three species significantly reduced concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus, with I. aquatica exhibiting the highest removal efficiencies (93.7% for both nitrogen and phosphorus). Notably,

Tetracycline antibiotics frequently co-occur with manganese (Mn) in freshwater environments, yet how Mn background gradients reshape mixture phytotoxicity remains insufficiently resolved. The objective of this study was to systematically investigate how varying Mn background levels modulate the phytotoxicity and interaction patterns of tetracycline antibiotics. Using Lemna minor as a model species, we employed full-factorial Mn × tetracycline concentration matrices (tetracycline, TC; oxytetracycline, OTC; and chlortetracycline, CTC) to quantify Mn-dependent modulation of tetracycline toxicity

This study presents a pilot-scale duckweed-based wastewater treatment system enhanced with CO2 fertilization to improve nutrient removal, CO2 capture, and biomass productivity. Three strains of Landoltia punctata were cultivated continuously for five months. In spring, CO2 supplementation significantly increased the biomass yield and starch and protein productivity (by more than 12.2, 2.4 and 3.5 g/m2/d, respectively), representing increases of 189-259 %, 1,108-2,330 % and 143-166 %, respectively, compared with those of the control group. The removal rates of total nitrogen (TN) and total phos

The risk of environmental pollution with rare earth oxides rises in line with increasing application of these compounds in different sectors. However, data on potential environmental hazard of lanthanides is scarce and concerns mostly Ce and Gd. In this work, the aquatic toxicity of eight doped lanthanide-based ceramic oxides (Ce0.9Gd0.1O2, LaFeO3, Gd0.97CoO3, LaCoO3, (La0.5Sr0.5)0.99MnO3, Ce0.8Pr0.2O2, (La0.6Sr0.4)0.95CoO3, LaNiO4) and one non-doped oxide (CeO2) with primary size from 23 to 590nm were evaluated in four short-term laboratory assays with freshwater crustaceans and duckweeds. Plants are permanently exposed to rapidly changing environments, therefore it is evident that they had to evolve mechanisms enabling them to dynamically adapt to such fluctuations. Here we study how plants can be trained to enhance their photoprotection and elaborate on the concept of the short-term illumination memory in Arabidopsis thaliana. By monitoring fluorescence emission dynamics we systematically observe the extent of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) after previous light exposure to recognise and quantify the memory effect. We propose a simplified mathematical model of photosynthesis

Aquatic ecosystems face escalating threats from heavy metals (HMs) and microplastics (MPs), which bioaccumulate and disrupt plant physiology, necessitating effective phytoremediation strategies. This study evaluated the impacts of synthetic wastewater (WW at 25%, 50%, 100%) containing Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and polyethylene MPs (0.5 g/L, 1 g/L) on Lemna minor in a 42-day hydroponic experiment. Morphological traits declined significantly, with fresh weight reduced by 92.33% and dry weight by 88.04% at 100% WW + 1 g MPs compared to controls. Photosynthetic pigments decreased up to 91.27% in total chlor

This study investigated heavy metals accumulation in Neltuma juliflora leaves, roots, and adjacent soils along a gradient of traffic intensity, and examined its morpho-physiological and biochemical responses to evaluate its suitability as a bioindicator and phytoremediator. Soil and plant samples were collected from low, moderate, high, and urban traffic zones within 0-500 m of roadways. Metal concentrations were markedly elevated in high-traffic areas. Washing the leaves significantly decreased surface metal deposition, notably Ni (59%), Cr (46%), and Cd (39%). Increased traffic density reduc

Freshwater ecosystems play a pivotal global role in water security and ecosystem services, but are increasingly threatened by multiple stressors, particularly emerging contaminants. These contaminants are in proximity to human activities and tend to accumulate in sediments, which further amplifies their ecological impacts on freshwater ecosystems. Nevertheless, most studies have focused on the effects of single or pairwise stressors, leaving the effects of complex higher-order interactions on macrophyte communities scant. Here, we conducted a full-factorial experiment using 96 glasshouse mesoc

Antifungal screening identified Pogostemon cablin essential oil (EO) as a potent fungicide against Colletotrichum fragariae, prompting bioassay-directed fractionation. This process identified patchoulol and pogostone as antifungal constituents. Pogostone exhibited strong activity with IC50 values of 8.5 ± 0.5, 2.34 ± 0.13, 7.74 ± 0.23, and 6.34 ± 0.85 μg mL-1 against C. fragariae, C. gloeosporioides, C. acutatum, and Botrytis cinerea, respectively, at 48 h. Due to its structural similarities to β-triketone herbicides, its phytotoxicity was assessed. It exhibited herbicidal activity against Lem

Recent uses of chlorine gas in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention are difficult to identify through chemical analysis as unique signatures of exposure have not been identified. We exposed living pine seedlings and English ivy to chlorine gas, extracted the pine needles, and analyzed the extracts by liquid chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-qTOF) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF). Data from exposed seedlings was compared to unexposed seedlings and bleach-treated seedlings using commercial and Battelle proprietary softwa
