Medical Article Assessment Using Artificial Intelligence.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The worthiness of a medical article is not known until it is read and critically evaluated. A process using artificial intelligence (AI) was developed and assessed to do that for a specific article. METHODS: A medical article was uploaded to an AI large language model program with instructions to answer specific bounded questions about that article only, its methodological components, assessment of findings, and appropriateness and validity of conclusions. Fifty articles were evaluated and compared using AI and human assessment. RESULTS: Agreement was found 89% of

Artificial intelligence for predictive mixture toxicology.

Human populations and ecosystems are continuously exposed to complex mixtures of environmental contaminants rather than to individual chemicals in isolation. These mixtures include pesticides, metals and metalloids, persistent organic pollutants, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, pharmaceuticals, plastic-associated compounds, air pollutants, nanomaterials, and numerous poorly characterized substances. Their combined effects may be additive, synergistic, or antagonistic, and are strongly influenced by dose, component ratio, timing, exposure sequence, and biolo

Artificial Intelligence in Upper Gastrointestinal Diagnosis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy by enhancing the detection, characterization, and management of GI diseases. In this review, we explore the transformative role of AI technologies, including machine learning and deep learning, in improving diagnostic accuracy and streamlining clinical workflows. AI systems such as convolutional neural networks have shown remarkable potential for identifying subtle lesions, assessing tumor margins, and reducing interobserver variability. By providing real-time decision-making support, AI minimizes unnecessary

Artificial intelligence for posterior capsule opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) remains the most common long-term complication of cataract surgery, affecting up to one-fifth of patients within 5 years and often requiring neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy. Clinical decisions about if and when to intervene depend primarily on subjective assessments and carry non-trivial risks, including transient intraocular pressure spikes, cystoid macular edema, and rare retinal detachment. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), spanning classical machine learning and deep convolutional neural networks, offer an o

Artificial intelligence for cell-free systems.

Cell-free systems let researchers carry out biological processes like protein synthesis and metabolism without using living cells. This approach has become increasingly important in synthetic biology because it allows for quick testing of ideas, running many experiments simultaneously, and maintaining tight control over reaction conditions. The main challenge has been figuring out how to optimize these systems, since there are so many variables that interact in unpredictable ways. Artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning, deep learning, and generative models, has begun to tackl

Reliability of Artificial Intelligence-enhanced Electrocardiography.

BACKGROUND: The scientific literature on artificial intelligence-enabled electrocardiography (AI-ECG) has defined a robust performance of AI models in detecting and predicting several structural heart disorders (SHDs) using ECGs. However, as a diagnostic test, the real-world utility of AI-ECG reliability requires the consistency of its results when repeated under similar conditions. AIM: To evaluate the reliability of AI-ECG models for different ECGs for the same person, across different diagnostic labels, and using varied modeling approaches. METHODS: We used ECG images (2000-2024) from 5 h

Artificial Intelligence for Improved Hepatosplenomegaly Diagnosis.

Hepatosplenomegaly is commonly diagnosed by radiologists based on single dimension measurements and heuristic cut-offs. Volumetric measurements may be more accurate for diagnosing organ enlargement. Artificial intelligence techniques may be able to automatically calculate liver and spleen volume and facilitate more accurate diagnosis. After IRB approval, 2 convolutional neural networks (CNN) were developed to automatically segment the liver and spleen on a training dataset comprised of 500 single-phase, contrast-enhanced CT abdomen and pelvis examinations. A separate dataset of ten thousand se

Artificial intelligence assisted acute patient journey.

Artificial intelligence is taking the world by storm and soon will be aiding patients in their journey at the hospital. The trials and tribulations of the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic have set the stage for shifting healthcare from a physical to a cyber-physical space. A physician can now remotely monitor a patient, admitting them only if they meet certain thresholds, thereby reducing the total number of admissions at the hospital. Coordination, communication, and resource management have been core issues for any industry. However, it is most accurate in healthcare. Both syst

Mobilizing artificial intelligence to cardiac telerehabilitation.

Cardiac telerehabilitation is a method that uses digital technologies to deliver cardiac rehabilitation from a distance. It has been shown to have benefits to improve patients' disease outcomes and quality of life, and further reduce readmission and adverse cardiac events. The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has brought considerable new challenges to cardiac rehabilitation, which foster cardiac telerehabilitation to be broadly applied. This transformation is associated with some difficulties that urgently need some innovations to search for the right path. Artificial intelligence, which h
