Asbestos, smoking, and laryngeal carcinoma.

This study was designed to examine the relationship between exposure to asbestos and laryngeal cancer. A retrospective study of 43 pairs of patients with laryngeal cancer and their matched controls examined a number of variables, including smoking, exposure to asbestos, and other occupational factors. Patients with laryngeal cancer and the controls were matched for age, sex, and place of residence. The data indicate a substantial association between asbestos exposure and laryngeal cancer. Cigarette smoking was also associated with the disease, although the strength of association was not as hi

Italian pool of asbestos workers cohorts: asbestos related mortality by industrial sector and cumulative exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Italy has been a large user of asbestos and asbestos containing materials until the 1992 ban. We present a pooled cohort study on long-term mortality in exposed workers. METHODS: Pool of 43 Italian asbestos cohorts (asbestos cement, rolling stock, shipbuilding, glasswork, harbors, insulation and other industries). SMRs were computed by industrial sector for the 1970-2010 period, for the major causes, using reference rates by age, sex, region and calendar period. RESULTS: The study included 51 801 subjects (5741 women): 55.9% alive, 42.6% died (cause known for 95%) and 1.5% lost to

[Asbestos: detection and characterization in tissue].

BACKGROUND: When asbestos fibers are inhaled, asbestos bodies can form in the lungs with the involvement of macrophages. It can take decades from the last exposure to the onset of an asbestos-related disease. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to present methods to detect asbestos bodies in lung tissue, the development of diagnostic criteria and to discuss pros and cons of different methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observations and evaluations from the German Mesothelioma Register, along with relevant literature review and expert recommendations in guidelines are presented. RESULTS: Asses

[Asbestos-related diseases of the thorax].

Asbestos fibers can lead to pulmonary fibrosis, thickening of the pleura and malignancies. These pathologic changes are possible rather than determinate and depend on the type of asbestos fiber, length of exposure to fibers and individual factors. In Germany asbestos fibers were widely used until 1993. Worldwide, there is currently no general ban on the use of asbestos. The leading cause of asbestos-related diseases is occupational exposure. Due to a long latency period the appearance of such diseases may be delayed for more than 40 years so that the final number of cases has not yet been reac

[Algorithm for assessment of exposure to asbestos].

There is no universally approved method in the scientific literature to identify subjects exposed to asbestos and divide them in classes according to intensity of exposure. The aim of our work is to study and develope an algorithm based on the findings of occupational anamnestical information provided by a large group of workers. The algorithm allows to discriminate, in a probabilistic way, the risk of exposure by the attribution of a code for each worker (ELSA Code--work estimated exposure to asbestos). The ELSA code has been obtained through a synthesis of information that the international

Immunological effects of silica and asbestos.

Silicosis patients (SILs) and patients who have been exposed to asbestos develop not only respiratory diseases but also certain immunological disorders. In particular, SIL sometimes complicates autoimmune diseases such as systemic scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis (known as Caplan syndrome), and systemic lupus erythematoses. In addition, malignant complications such as lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma often occur in patients exposed to asbestos, and may be involved in the reduction of tumor immunity. Although silica-induced disorders of autoimmunity have been explained as adjuvant-type e

Measurements of asbestos burden in tissues.

Asbestos inhaled into the lung is recognized as a potential causal agent for the development of diseases in man. The diseases induced by asbestos include lung cancer, fibrosis of the lung (asbestosis), and extrapulmonary tumors including mesothelioma (a tumor of the serosal membrane), as well as fibrosis and other changes in the pleura linings. The cause of these diseases can often be more specifically linked to asbestos exposure once tissue burden of asbestos is established. The asbestos burden in tissue can be defined as the number of asbestos bodies and/or the numbers and types of asbestos

Asbestos bodies in lungs at necropsy.

This study was made in Glasgow, Scotland, near an industrial area where ship building is an important industry. Asbestos bodies were found in 23% of 100 consecutive hospital necropsies, bodies were present in 37% of the 62 males, none were found in 38 females. These findings are compared with results of other similar surveys. In 85.4% of cases showing asbestos bodies, hyaline pleural plaques were found. There was one case of asbestosis and three of bronchial carcinoma in the cases showing asbestos bodies.

[The National Asbestos Plan in Italy].

Tissue transglutaminase 2 (tTG2) is an intestinal digestive enzyme which deamidates already partially digested dietary gluten e.g. gliadin peptides. In genetically predisposed individuals, tTG2 triggers autoimmune responses that are characterized by the production of tTG2 antibodies and their direct deposition into small intestinal wall. The presence of such antibodies constitutes one of the major hallmarks of the celiac disease (CD). Epidermal transglutaminase (eTG) is another member of the transglutaminase family that can also function as an autoantigen in a small minority of CD patients. In

Asbestos in toys: an exemplary case.

Staphylococcus aureus is an extremely adaptable pathogen causing a wide variety of infections. Staphylococcal surface proteins that directly interact with host extracellular proteins greatly contribute to virulence and are involved in adhesion, immune escape and nutrient acquisition. In our extensive search for highly immunogenic, in vivo-expressed, staphylococcal proteins, previously, we identified a novel member of the family of Gram-positive anchor motif proteins with a predicted 895 amino acid long sequence. In order to determine the ligand for this novel LPXTG cell wall protein, we employ

The health risk of chrysotile asbestos.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The word asbestos is a poorly attributed term, as it refers to two very different minerals with very different characteristics. One is the serpentine mineral of which the white asbestos, chrysotile, is the most common. The other is the amphibole asbestos, which includes the blue asbestos crocidolite and the brown asbestos amosite. Although today chrysotile is the only type used commercially, the legacy of past use of amphibole asbestos remains. This review clarifies the differences between the two mineral families referred to as asbestos and summarizes the scientific basis f

[Markers of asbestos exposure in workers].

Examination covered 213 workers of asbestos technical ware plant. Standard X-ray examination no pulmonary and pleural changes were revealed. External respiration studies demonstrated moderate ventilation disorders in half of the examinees: in hardware workshop workers--restrictive type disorders, in autofriction components workshop workers--obstructive type ones with hyperventilation. Lower diffusing lung capacity in one-third of the workers in one of two autofriction components workshops proves most likely distributive disorders. Moderately increased serum alveolar mucin 3EG5 in 20% of the ex

The epidemiology of asbestos-related diseases.

Asbestos has been recognised as a potential health hazard since the 1940s. Of the two major species of asbestos; white asbestos (chrysotile) and blue asbestos (crocidolite), both of which are hazardous. The workers at extraction facilities are at the greatest risk of exposure to asbestos and, therefore, the development of asbestos-related diseases, commonly mesothelioma. However, other individuals at a high risk of exposure include asbestos-cement workers, insulation workers and ship-yard workers. Environmental exposure to asbestos can occur as a result of living in areas either characterised

Asbestos and cancer of the larynx: is there a relationship?

A head and neck examination was conducted on 322 personnel in a plant that manufactures brake linings and disks where asbestos is a major component. The personnel were categorized according to occupational risk, duration of employment, and smoking and alcohol habits. Thirty-nine percent had abnormalities, the most common being laryngitis (15%), deviated nasal septum (13%), and neck mass (5.3%). Six members required a biopsy, but no cancer was discovered. Of 47 personnel with laryngitis, 46 were smokers (P less than .01). In regard to asbestos exposure, 20% of the high-risk group had laryngitis

The pleural manifestations of asbestos exposure.

Pleural abnormalities are the most common disease manifestations of asbestos exposure and have both clinical and epidemiologic implications. Benign pleural processes include pleural thickening, which can be discrete (plaques) or diffuse, rounded atelectasis (pseudotumor), and benign exudative asbestos effusions. Asbestos is the most significant cause of diffuse malignant mesothelioma. Most patients with discrete pleural thickening have normal pulmonary function. Patients with extensive pleural involvement, however, can have significant restrictive impairment with no or only minimal interstitia

Asbestos and tuberculosis in Trieste, Italy.

The distribution of counts of asbestos bodies in lung specimens from 25 persons dying of fibrocaseous tuberculosis was essentially identical to that in age- and sex-matched control subjects. Although tuberculosis mortality has been elevated in the past in cohorts of asbestos workers, asbestos exposure at environmental levels found in a region with a history of heavy asbestos use appears to be unassociated with risk of tuberculosis. Potentiation of the risk of death from tuberculosis may require both a high risk of tuberculosis in the general community and intense personal exposure to asbestos.

Retention of asbestos fibres in lungs of workers with asbestosis, asbestosis and lung cancer, and mesothelioma in Asbestos township.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a mineralogical study on the particles retained in the necropsied lungs of a homogenous group of asbestos miners and millers from Asbestos township (and a local reference population) and to consider the hypothesis that there is a difference in size between fibres retained in the lungs of patients with asbestosis with and without lung cancer. METHODS: Samples of lung tissue were obtained from 38 patients with asbestosis without lung cancer, 25 with asbestosis and lung cancer, and 12 with mesothelioma, from necropsied Quebec chrysotile miners and millers from Asbestos town
