Animal proteins are essential elements of human and animal feed chain and improving the safety of human and animal feed requires understanding and controlling of the transmission of infectious agents in food chain. Many pathogenic infectious agents, such as prion protein is known to damage the central nervous system in the cattle. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) results from infection agent (prion), and affects number of species such as cattle, human, and cats. In addition, Salmonella, pathogenic E. coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes were found in animal by-products used in the hu

The implementation of biosecurity measures on dairy farms is influenced by multiple factors, including farmers' experience, perception of disease risk, social influences, and epidemiological and economic factors. The aim of this study was to identify the biosecurity option providing the highest economic return for dairy farms. To achieve this, a biosecurity cost calculator was developed using a database of prices associated with the different components required to implement each biosecurity measure. The probability of pathogen introduction was estimated through a quantitative risk assessment

BACKGROUND: Control strategies against contagious agalactia (CA), considered one of the most important diseases affecting small ruminants in countries surrounding the Mediterranean, are mainly based on traditional strategies considered suboptimal such as the use of inactivated vaccines and antibiotics. This manuscript analysed the efficacy of an alternative non-mandatory official control programme based on a multi-platform diagnostic panel and biosecurity developed and started in 185 herds placed in a contagious agalactia endemic area of Spain, using the data of 74,080 samples collected and an

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection, salmonellosis, and bovine leukosis virus are important dairy and beef cattle diseases from a health perspective. For herds without infection, keeping the disease out through testing of source herds should be prioritized. For herds with infection, control programs should be instituted and followed to reduce the prevalence and ultimately eliminate the disease.

Live pig specimen collection can be time-consuming as it may require physical restraining. Non-invasive methods for live animals that don't involve blood spillage are available but some may present limitations of application or pathogen detection. Alternative methods focused on the mortality are also available but may derive in blood spillage. As biocontainment and bioexclusion are of concern, especially for pathogens such as the ones that cause classical swine fever and African swine fever, alternative methods can be applied. This article presents the results and opinions of the use cardiac p

Biosecurity is a cornerstone of infectious disease prevention in cattle farming, yet its implementation remains suboptimal. This study aimed to identify psychosocial and socio-technical factors significantly associated with the adoption of biosecurity measures among French cattle farmers. An online survey collected data on practices and perceptions from 412 respondents, and multivariable logistic regression models were employed to evaluate four key domains: inter-herd contact, animal introduction, visitor management, and the wildlife-livestock interface. The results identified risk perception

BACKGROUND: Effective biosecurity measures prevent the spread of pathogens, thereby reducing the need for antibiotic use on livestock farms. However, quantitative data on these practices and health outcomes in semi-intensive broiler farms in low-income settings is limited. A longitudinal study in Wakiso, Uganda, aimed to evaluate biosecurity practices, health performance, and antibiotic use in such farms.
METHODS: The FarmUSE survey tool was used to collect data from 19 farms over two production cycles. A biosecurity risk assessment tool was used to quantify biosecurity. Blood samples (n = 34

In livestock, the importance of hygiene management is gaining importance within the context of biosecurity. The aim of this study was to monitor the implementation of biosecurity and hygiene procedures in 20 swine herds over a 12-month period, as driven by tailor-made plans, including training on-farm. The measure of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) environmental contents was used as an output biomarker. The presence of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-E. coli) was also investigated as sent

Integrated broiler operations that allow producers to combine various biosecurity and sanitation practices account for approximately 97.6% of chicken meat production in Korea, but it is not well known about the biosecurity level or compliance with regulations for each operation. Therefore, the objective this study was to analyze the current adoption of biosecurity practices and trends in antimicrobial use in 74 farms from 5 major integrated broiler chicken operations (A-E). The highest stock densities of more than 65 birds per 3.3 m2 (0.5 birds/ft2) showed in 66.7 and 33.3% of the farms in ope

The transportation of livestock poses an increased risk of disease transmission, with transportation vehicles acting as vectors for disease. Biosecurity management within the livestock industry is therefore critical to reduce the risk of disease transmission. This study investigated the current biosecurity practices of stakeholders within the livestock transport industry in Australia using a cross-sectional study. It examined how communications technology is utilised in this sector, exploring the drivers and barriers influencing the adoption of communications technology for managing biosecurit

This two-phase study evaluated biosecurity vulnerabilities across 100 commercial poultry farms via a field survey and an in vitro assessment of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) versus a silver nanoparticle-hydrogen peroxide (AgNPs- H2O2) composite. Survey metrics revealed critical baseline deficiencies: 80% of farmers lacked antimicrobial resistance (AMR) awareness, 90% practiced no litter treatment, and 70% of untreated waste was sold directly to aquaculture. Molecular analysis of 192 litter samples verified a 72.4% E. coli prevalence, with Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) indices peaking at 0.90

Avian influenza (AI) is a severe respiratory disease affecting wild and domestic birds globally. There is currently no approved vaccine for AI control in Nigeria. Therefore, biosecurity measures remain the primary preventive strategy. However, there is limited information on the AI carrier status of captive wild birds and the implementation of biosecurity programs (BPs) in zoological gardens across the country. This study aimed to screen captive wild birds for AI and evaluate the BPs in selected zoological gardens in southwestern Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional approach, cloacal swabs and fre

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is an important zoonotic disease. The study aims to identify farmer behaviour types to inform the design of behaviour change programmes for mitigating the transmission of HPAI. Therefore, the study utilised multivariate statistical analysis for gaining a better understanding of the relationships among farmers' 30 biosecurity behaviours, the risk of HPAI infection, and distinct features of commercial broiler farmers, which is different from using simple and few binary biosecurity measures. Convenience sampling was used to collect data from 303 Taiwan's f

BACKGROUND: Biosecurity measures are essential for mitigating the risk of pathogen introduction and spread in farms. While standardised tools for monitoring biosecurity implementation exist, they are often not tailored to the specific needs of low and middle income countries (LMICs), where pathogen occurrence and farming practices can be highly variable compared to intensive high income country settings. The aim of our study was to develop a flexible risk assessment tool for evaluating biosecurity practices on small and medium-scale poultry farms in LMICs. The methodology described here allows
