The authors studied 100 patients who had been exposed to toxic molds in their homes. The predominant molds identified were Alternaria, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Stachybotrys, Curvularia, Basidiomycetes, Myxomycetes, smuts, Epicoccus, Fusarium, Bipolaris, and Rhizopus. A variety of tests were performed on all, or on subgroups of, these patients. Sensitivities and exposures were confirmed in all patients by intradermal skin testing for individual molds (44-98% positive), and by measurement of serum antibodies. Abnormalities in T and B cells, and subsets, were found in more than 80%

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants accumulate antimicrobial compounds known as phytoalexins in response to pathogen attack. To date, more than 20 compounds have been isolated as phytoalexins from rice, mostly diterpenoids. However, the quantitative analysis of diterpenoid phytoalexins in various cultivars has revealed that the cultivar 'Jinguoyin' does not accumulate these compounds at detectable concentrations. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to detect a new class of phytoalexins from Bipolaris oryzae infected leaves of 'Jinguoyin'. We detected five compounds in the leaves of the target cul

Spot blotch disease, caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana, is an important threat to wheat, causing an annual loss of ~17%. Under epidemic conditions, these losses may be 100%, yet the molecular responses of wheat to spot blotch remain almost uncharacterized. Moreover, defense-related phytohormone signaling genes have been poorly characterized in wheat. Here, we have identified 18 central components of salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), ethylene (ET), and enhanced disease susceptibility 1 (EDS1) signaling pathways as well as the genes of the phenylpropanoid pathway in wheat. A common consequence of using agricultural fungicides is the development of resistance by fungal pathogens, which undermines reliability of fungicidal effectiveness. A potentially new strategy to aid in overcoming or minimizing this problem is enhancement of pathogen sensitivity to fungicides, or "chemosensitization." Chemosensitization can be accomplished by combining a commercial fungicide with a certain non- or marginally fungicidal substance at levels where, alone, neither compound would be effective. Chemosensitization decreases the probability of the pathogen developing resistance, reduc

Normal fungal conjunctiva microbiota of horses remains stable in healthy animals, free from ocular and/or systemic diseases which may, eventually, cause ocular alterations. The knowledge of the fungal microbiota is of great importance due to the reduced number of studies reported in the literature and also to the large occurrence of ocular alterations, mainly keratomycosis, in these animals. The aim of this study was to isolate and to identify the fungi present in the ocular conjunctiva of healthy horses belonging to the Military Police Cavalry of Alagoas. Samples from both conjunctival sacks

The natural pesticide phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) is known to lack phloem mobility, whereas Metalaxyl is a representative phloem systemic fungicide. In order to endow PCA with phloem mobility and also enhance its antifungal activity, thirty-two phenazine-1-carboxylic acid-N-phenylalanine esters conjugates were designed and synthesized by conjugating PCA with the active structure N-acylalanine methyl ester of Metalaxyl. All target compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. The antifungal evaluation results revealed that several target compounds exhibited moderate to potent

Colletotrichum graminicola is a systemic vascular pathogen that causes anthracnose stalk rot and leaf blight of maize. In the course of an effort to explore the potential presence and roles of C. graminicola metabolites in maize, ethyl acetate extracts of solid substrate fermentations of several C. graminicola isolates from Michigan and Illinois were found to be active against Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium verticillioides, both mycotoxin-producing seed-infecting fungal pathogens. Chemical investigations of the extract of one such isolate (NRRL 47511) led to the isolation of known metabolites

Opportunistic fungi have emerged during the past decade as important causes of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Candida species constitute the third to fourth most common causes of nosocomial blood stream infections, and Aspergillus species have emerged as the most common infectious cause of pneumonic mortality in bone marrow/stem cell transplant recipients. Among HIV-infected patients, meningoencephalitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans ranks among the most common AIDS-defining infections. Hyaline septated filamentous fungi, such as Fusarium species, Acremonium species, P

BACKGROUND: The dematiaceous fungi cause numerous infections in both immunocompetent as well as immunocompromised individuals. The route of infection is either respiratory or subcutaneous/ocular implantation. Despite the rising incidence of these infections, very few studies have been conducted to decipher the seasonal and geographic variation of environmental burden of these fungi.
METHODS: We conducted environmental surveillance (both vegetation and air) to determine seasonal spore burden of dematiaceous fungi in urban and rural regions of North India, namely Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and

Rhizospheric microorganisms can increase phosphorus availability in the soil. In this regard, the ability of phosphofungi to dissolve insoluble phosphorus compounds is greater than that of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. The aim of the current study was to identify efficient phosphofungi that could be developed as commercial microbial agents. Among several phosphate-solubilizing fungal isolates screened, strain CS-1 showed the highest phosphorus-solubilization ability. Based on phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region sequence, it was identified as Aspergillus niger. Hi

The past two decades have witnessed an increase in serious fungal infections, without corresponding growth in available antifungal agents. Voriconazole (VRC) is a novel triazole antifungal, recently approved in Europe for treatment of serious infections caused by Aspergillus, Fusarium, Scedosporium, and resistant Candida species. Voriconazole has in vitro activity against yeasts and yeast-like fungi similar, or superior to, fluconazole (FLC), itraconazole (ITC) and amphotericin B (AMB). Candida albicans is generally the most susceptible yeast (VRC MIC subset90 of 0.06 microg/ml); C. krusei oft

Diagnostic criteria for allergic fungal sinusitis have not been established, and clinical information consists primarily of isolated case reports. We proposed five diagnostic criteria for allergic fungal sinusitis including: (1) the demonstration of the characteristic eosinophil-rich allergic mucin visually or histopathologically, (2) a positive fungal stain or culture from the sinus at surgery, and (3) the absence of immunodeficiency or diabetes. With these criteria, seven patients in our metropolitan area with allergic fungal sinusitis were identified in a short period. Initial symptoms in o

Fresh walnut kernels are highly susceptible to microbial contamination and quality deterioration during cold storage due to their high moisture content and active physiological metabolism, posing challenges to storage safety. This study systematically investigated the microbial community succession, metabolite dynamics, and quality changes of dehusked fresh walnut kernels during 90 days of cold storage at 4 °C. The results showed that the bacterial community was dominated by Proteobacteria (83.35 %-87.13 %) throughout storage, with the initially dominant Paucibacter showing a slight decrease i

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a major crop grown on all continents. Due to environmental concerns, it is desirable to reduce the inputs of both chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers. However, yield reduction must be expected when switching to low-input systems. To mitigate such losses, the use of natural or introduced microbiomes may provide the key to maintaining sustainable yield. Phyllosphere fungi, both endophytic and phylloplane-associated, colonize aboveground plant structures, some of which have the potential to mitigate biotic and abiotic stressors. A first step toward realiz
