Botulinum toxin-induced blepharoptosis: Anatomy, etiology, prevention, and therapeutic options.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) has grown tremendously in aesthetic dermatology since 2002 when the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved its use for treating moderate-to-severe glabellar lines. Blepharoptosis, due to local spread of toxin, is a reported side effect of BoNT-A which, although rare, more frequently occurs among inexperienced practitioners. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this review is to highlight the causes and management of eyelid ptosis secondary to BoNT-A administration including new anatomic pathways for BoNT-A spread from the brow area to the

Adjunctive techniques to traditional advancement procedures for treating severe blepharoptosis.

BACKGROUND: To create a more physiologic eyelid opening in patients with severe blepharoptosis, the authors used lamina propria mucosa of conjunctiva, which continues to the check ligament of the superior fornix, in addition to levator aponeurosis and Müller's muscle as a composite flap. In patients with epicanthal folds with associated telecanthus, the authors also performed epicanthoplasty with medial canthal tendon shortening. METHODS: Fifty blepharoptosis patients (85 eyelids) with a degree of ptosis of greater than 4 mm underwent the advancement technique using the levator aponeurosis-Mü

Blepharoptosis Associated With the Wearing of Hard Contact Lenses in Keratoconic Eyes.

Keratoconus is a condition that causes progressive thinning and anterior protrusion of the cornea. Because of its irregular astigmatism, mild to moderate keratoconus is corrected with hard contact lenses (HCLs), but blepharoptosis due to the long-term wearing of HCLs is often a problem. In this study, we investigated blepharoptosis in HCL wearers with keratoconus. Thirty-seven keratoconic eyes were enrolled and divided into several groups according to their wearing history or age. Eyelid margin distance (EMD), margin light reflex distance-1 (MRD-1), and levator function (LF) were measured usin

A review of acquired blepharoptosis: prevalence, diagnosis, and current treatment options.

Blepharoptosis (ptosis) is among the most common disorders of the upper eyelid encountered in both optometric and ophthalmic practice. The unilateral or bilateral drooping of the upper eyelid that characterises ptosis can affect appearance and impair visual function, both of which can negatively impact quality of life. While there are several known forms of congenital ptosis, acquired ptosis (appearing later in life, due to a variety of causes) is the predominant form of the condition. This review summarises the prevalence, causes, identification, differential diagnosis, and treatment of acqui

Lower Eyelid Position Changes Following Müller's Muscle-Conjunctival Resection Blepharoptosis Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetry of the lower eyelids and a lower position of the lower eyelid on the ptotic side are common issues in patients with upper lid ptosis. Understanding the relationship between upper lid ptosis correction and lower eyelid position will facilitate better treatment strategies for ptosis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the lower eyelid position before and after Müller's muscle-conjunctival resection (MMCR) in unilateral myogenic ptosis (MP) and aponeurotic ptosis (AP). METHODS: This prospective interventional before-and-after study included adults with blephar

Blepharoptosis revealing a metastatic renal cell carcinoma: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a relatively rare malignancy often discovered incidentally. Approximately 15 % of cases are metastatic at diagnosis, commonly affecting the lungs, bones, lymph nodes, and liver. We present an exceptional case of RCC metastasizing to the eyelid. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old female with no prior cancer history exhibited rapidly progressing left blepharoptosis. Examination revealed a painless, solid eyelid mass. Immunohistochemistry of the eyelid mass biopsy identified a carcinoma potentially of renal origin. A thorax, abdomen, and pelvis CT scan c
