Quantitative evaluation of blinking in blepharospasm using electrooculogram-integrated smart eyeglasses.

Smart eyeglasses with an integrated electrooculogram (EOG) device (JINS MEME ES_R®, JINS Inc.) were evaluated as a quantitative diagnostic tool for blepharospasm. Participants without blepharospasm (n = 21) and patients with blepharospasm (n = 19) undertook two voluntary blinking tests (light and fast) while wearing the smart eyeglasses. Vertical (Vv) and horizontal (Vh) components were extracted from time-series voltage waveforms recorded during 30 s of the blinking tests. Two parameters, the ratio between the maximum and minimum values in the power spectrum (peak-bottom ratio, Fourier transf

Case report: A relevant misdiagnosis: Photosensitive epilepsy mimicking a blinking tic.

Blinking in children is most frequently a functional and transient symptom. Nonetheless, sometimes it is the first clinical manifestation of a neurological disorder. The differential diagnosis between voluntary actions, tics and other neurological disorders among which seizures may be challenging and misdiagnosis is common. A 6-year-old girl in good health was admitted for a recent history of bilateral eye blinking. Blinking did not interfere with the girl's activities. The patients reported that blinking seemed to be triggered by sunlight exposure and that girl sometimes seemed to be attracte

Smartphone Use and Effects on Tear Film, Blinking and Binocular Vision.

Purpose: Smartphone use is now ubiquitous and is associated with a range of ocular and visual symptoms. However, little is known about the etiology of the symptoms which accompany smartphone use and the relative contribution of accommodation/vergence versus that of the ocular surface and of blinking. This study examined the effects of 60 min reading on a smartphone on ocular symptoms, binocular vision, tear function, blinking and working distance. Methods: Twelve young adults (18-23 years; 9F:3M) with normal vision and without dry eye, or major accommodative/binocular vision disorders, complete

INCREASED BLINKING MAY BE A PRECURSOR OF BLEPHAROSPASM: A LONGITUDINAL STUDY.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this five-year longitudinal study was to investigate whether patients with increased blinking develop orbicularis oculi muscle spasms. METHODS: Eleven patients who initially manifested increased blinking alone were clinically and neurophysiologically re-evaluated five years later. RESULTS: By the five-year follow-up assessment, nine of the 11 patients had developed orbicularis oculi muscle spasms. The blink reflex recovery cycle became abnormal whereas somatosensory temporal discrimination, already abnormal at the first evaluation, did not significantly change. CONCLUS

Tear lipid layer deficiency associated with incomplete blinking: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Meibomian gland obstruction induces hyposecretion of tear film lipids, which results in lipid layer deficiency and evaporative dry eye. Unfortunately, the importance of blinking in meibomian gland dysfunction has been largely overlooked, and it is not known whether incomplete blinking causes tear lipid deficiency, even in the unobstructed meibomian glands. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old woman suffering from foreign body sensations in her eyes was examined. The cornea was clear and tear secretion was normal. Lid margin abnormalities were not observed and the meibum was clear. How

Shell and ligand-dependent blinking of CdSe-based core/shell nanocrystals.

Blinking of zinc blende CdSe-based core/shell nanocrystals is studied as a function of shell materials and surface ligands. CdSe/ZnS, CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS and CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals are prepared by colloidal synthesis and six monolayers of larger bandgap shell materials are grown over the CdSe core. Organic-soluble nanocrystals covered with stearate are made water-soluble by ligand exchange with 3-mercaptopropionic acid. The light-emitting states of nanocrystals are characterized by absorption and emission spectroscopy as well as photoluminescence lifetime measurements in solution. The

[Behavioral differences in childhood depression: study of blinking and auto-manipulation].

Different investigations have studied the evolution of childhood depression but little research has been based on the observation of behavior. This work aims at analysing two singular behaviors: eye blink and auto-manipulation. This paper compares the results obtained on day A(hospital admission, before treatment) and on day D (discharge, after clinical improvement) during a standardized interview recorded in video with children aged 8-13 years, hospitalized for a major depressive episode and for a control group. The results show a significant decrease in eye blink frequency and the mean auto-

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a dual deep learning model (DLM)-based software (BlinkNet-Q) for near real-time quantification of blink rate and incomplete blinks using standard red-green-blue video. METHODS: BlinkNet-Q integrated two DLMs: DLM-1 classified open-eye versus complete-blink frames, and DLM-2 differentiated complete from incomplete blinks. This proof-of-concept technical validation study included separate model development and independent testing cohorts. The development cohort comprised 15 participants (30 eyes), yielding 2953 annotated frames for training and internal validati

Changes in the blink reflex after a sport-related concussion: Test-retest reliability of a blink reflexometer in high school athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a traumatic brain injury affecting approximately 20 % of high school athletes annually. Recent investigations propose the blink reflex as a potential diagnostic measure for SRC, with studies showing significant changes in the reflex post-concussion. The current study aims to assess the baseline test-retest reliability of the EyeStat device, a handheld blink reflexometer, in a cohort of healthy high school athletes. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of healthy youth athletes at a local high school was conducted. The EyeStat device, an FDA-appro

Light-stimulus-evoked blink reflex: methods, normal values, relation to other blink reflexes, and observations in multiple sclerosis.

The blink reflex may be evoked by auditory click or light stimulation, the latter being constantly present in all healthy subjects. The latency and amplitude of the light-stimulus-evoked blink response (L-BR) is influenced by the light intensity, distance between the light stimulus and the eye, attention, and background facilitation. The L-BR was abnormal in 75% of definite and 61% of probable multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. When abnormal, the L-BR was more commonly absent than delayed. Optic nerve lesions could be identified by the pattern of abnormalities in the L-BR in some patients. The

BlinkLinMulT: Transformer-Based Eye Blink Detection.

This work presents BlinkLinMulT, a transformer-based framework for eye blink detection. While most existing approaches rely on frame-wise eye state classification, recent advancements in transformer-based sequence models have not been explored in the blink detection literature. Our approach effectively combines low- and high-level feature sequences with linear complexity cross-modal attention mechanisms and addresses challenges such as lighting changes and a wide range of head poses. Our work is the first to leverage the transformer architecture for blink presence detection and eye state recog

Development of an Eye Model With a Physiological Blink Mechanism.

PURPOSE: To develop an eye model with a physiological blink mechanism. METHODS: All parts of the eye model were designed using computer-aided design software. The eyelid consisted of a unique 3D printed structure containing teeth to physically secure a flexible membrane. Both the eyeball and eyelid membrane were synthesized using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Four molecular weights of PVA (89-98, 85-124, 130, and 146-186 kDa) were tested at a range of concentrations between 5% and 30% weight/volume. The wettability and water content of these materials were compared with the bovine cornea and scler

Envelope filter sequence to delete blinks and overshoots.

BACKGROUND: Eye movements have been used in control interfaces and as indicators of somnolence, workload and concentration. Different techniques can be used to detect them: we focus on the electrooculogram (EOG) in which two kinds of interference occur: blinks and overshoots. While they both draw bell-shaped waveforms, blinks are caused by the eyelid, whereas overshoots occur due to target localization error and are placed on saccade. They need to be extracted from the EOG to increase processing effectiveness. METHODS: This paper describes off- and online processing implementations based on l

Experiential modification of the trigeminal reflex blink circuit.

To characterize the organization and plasticity of the trigeminal reflex blink circuit, we interacted blink-evoking supraorbital (SO) and infraorbital (IO) nerve stimuli in alert rats. Stimulation of either trigeminal branch produced a short-lasting inhibition followed by a longer-lasting facilitation of blinks evoked by stimulating the other nerve. When IO stimulation evoked a smaller blink than SO stimulation (IO < SO), SO stimulation facilitated subsequent IO-evoked blinks more than IO stimulation facilitated SO-evoked blinks. When IO > SO, IO and SO stimulation exerted equivalent facilitat

Neural correlates of conscious perception in the attentional blink.

If attending to a target in a rapid stream of visual stimuli within the next 400 ms or so, a second target in the stream is frequently not detected by an observer. This so-called attentional blink can provide a comparison of neural signals elicited by identical stimuli that, in one condition, reach conscious awareness and, in the other, fail to be selected for awareness. In the present study, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), differences of neural activation were studied in an attentional blink experiment in order to identify brain regions putatively involved in
