Implementation of a blood bank generated tube for second blood group determination: Challenges, yield, and cost.

BACKGROUND: The second blood group determination or group check sample is a process of verifying the ABO group with a second blood sample prior to transfusion. It has been used to detect errors related to wrong blood in tube (WBIT) events and reduce the risk of ABO-incompatible transfusions. To prevent the clinical team from collecting the group check sample at the same time as the first sample, a tan top tube only available from the blood bank was introduced for second blood group determinations if drawn within 24 h of the first group and screen. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a retrospec

Utilisation of emergency blood in a cohort of South African emergency centres with no direct access to a blood bank.

INTRODUCTION: The transfusion of emergency blood is an essential part of haemostatic resuscitation. Locally, where direct access to a blood bank is limited, emergency blood is stored within emergency centres. It was previously suggested that stored blood provides inadequate volumes compared to what is needed. Minimal data are available regarding indications for emergency blood usage. We aimed to describe the utilisation of emergency blood in selected Cape Town emergency centres. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out at three secondary level emergency centres (no blood

[Costs of Chagas' disease screening test in blood donors in two Colombian blood banks, 2015].

INTRODUCTION: Transfusion is a mechanism of transmission of Chagas' disease. There are no studies on the costs of the screening test in Colombian blood banks. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the costs of the screening test for Chagas' disease among blood donors in two Colombian blood banks, 2015. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a micro-costing study from the perspective of the health care provider to estimate the cost of Chagas' disease testing in two blood banks, Banco de Sangre de la Cruz Roja, Seccional Bolívar, and Banco de Sangre del Hospital de Yopal, Casanare, taking into account four cost

Blood donation and transfusion practices: the 1990 American Association of Blood Banks Institutional Membership Questionnaire.

Responses to the 1990 American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Institutional Membership Questionnaire were submitted by 2126 regional blood centers, hospital-based blood banks, and transfusion facilities. Data from 2117 of these facilities were considered to be valid. The questionnaire included information on blood donor demographics, number of units collected, and collection procedures; services performed; usage of blood components; and transfusion-transmitted diseases reported during 1989. Institutional members collected 7.4 million whole blood units, of which 90.8 percent were donated for

Low usage rate of banked sibling cord blood units in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for children with hematological malignancies: implications for directed cord blood banking policies.

Directed sibling cord blood banking is indicated in women delivering healthy babies who already have a sibling with a disease that is potentially treatable with an allogeneic cord blood transplant. We evaluated the effectiveness of a national directed cord blood banking program in sibling HLA-identical stem cell transplantation for hematological malignancies and the factors influencing the usage rate of the stored cord blood units. Fifty families were enrolled from which, 48 cord blood units were successfully collected and 2 collections failed due to damaged cord/placenta at delivery. Among en

Negative peri-donation events among whole blood donors in a blood bank in Ibadan, Nigeria.

The existence and sustenance of the blood bank depends on blood donors. It is imperative that the donation experience is satisfactory for the donors. Therefore this study was carried out to determine the frequency of undesirable events experienced by the blood donor as part of donor haemovigilance. This was a retrospective descriptive study of the events that occurred amongst the blood donors of the blood bank of a tertiary institution. The blood donor incident book was reviewed for the period of six months. Negative undesirable events occurred in 2% of the donor populations, of which 45.8% co

Cord blood stem cell transplantation. Why it is necessary to establish a Bulgarian cord blood bank?

The allogenic transplantation of hemopoietic stem cell from bone marrow and peripheral blood is limited due to the necessity to identify HLA matched donor within the family or in bone marrow donor registries. Although, more than 10 million donors are available worldwide, completely HLA matched donors could be found only for 75% of the patients. It is well known that transplantations of hematopoietic stem cell from cord blood are characterized with a lower risk of GvHD and therefore do not require so strict criteria for HLA matching, and less time for search of matched donor is needed. The nece

[HIV transmission via blood transfusions: a study by the Swiss Red Cross blood bank service].

An inquiry amongst blood transfusion services served to establish at 19 the number of known transfusion associated HIV infections in Switzerland. In 12 cases the transfusion of an anti-HIV positive blood unit could be proven retrospectively, while in 7 cases an HIV-infected blood donor could not be found but the association of the infection with blood transfusion is highly probable by exclusion of other risk factors. All these infections occurred before introduction of anti-HIV screening in Switzerland in November 1985. After this date no new transfusion associated HIV infections have been rep

Behind and beyond the (non-)use of cord blood banking: Delayed cord clamping and non-decisions.

Umbilical cord blood (UCB) banking has been criticised in social science scholarship as emblematic of the neoliberal responsibilisation of parenthood. Yet this article foregrounds what most parents actually do: they do not store UCB. Drawing on the concept of non-use in the social studies of technology, we examine this non-use of cryopreservation services. Our empirical material from Germany shows that non-use does not necessarily reflect inertia or ignorance but instead points, first, to alternative practices surrounding UCB and, second, to the situational circumstances of decision-making. As

Ethnicity, equity and public benefit: a critical evaluation of public umbilical cord blood banking in Australia.

Over the past decade umbilical cord blood (UCB) has been increasingly used as a source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for patients who require a HSC transplant but do not have an HLA-matched donor. It was anticipated that using UCB as an alternative source of HSCs would increase the chance of finding a donor, particularly for the otherwise underrepresented ethnic minority groups. To evaluate the effectiveness of the Australian public UCB banks to increase the ethnic diversity of available HSC donations, this paper analyses the ethnic diversity of the Sydney Cord Blood Bank (SCBB), compari

Impact of donor- and collection-related variables on product quality in ex utero cord blood banking.

BACKGROUND: Optimizing product quality is a current focus in cord blood banking. This study evaluates the role of selected donor- and collection-related variables. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Retrospective review was performed of cord blood units (CBUs) collected ex utero between February 1, 2000, and February 28, 2002. Preprocessing volume and total nucleated cell (TNC) counts and postprocessing CD34 cell counts were used as product quality indicators. RESULTS: Of 2084 CBUs, volume determinations and TNC counts were performed on 1628 and CD34+ counts on 1124 CBUs. Mean volume and TNC and CD34

Bacterial screening of platelet components: Experience at a hospital-based blood bank.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bacterial contamination of platelets stored at room temperature poses the highest risk of infection and fatality. Our hospital-based blood bank performs bacterial culture using the Bactec™ FX system for all whole blood-derived and apheresis units. Approximately 1 mL is collected from each of three to four buffy coat whole blood-derived platelet concentrates (PCs). The pooled sample is then inoculated into a single aerobic paediatric culture bottle. For apheresis units, 3 mL is inoculated per unit. Inoculation is performed at least 12 h after donation or 16-24 h after

Detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in a Reactive Blood Bank Sample in Sonora, Mexico.

Chagas disease is a neglected disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, a public health problem in both endemic and non-endemic countries. In Mexico, the southern region is considered endemic, and cases are frequently reported; however, in the northwestern region, only a few cases are confirmed annually. This study describes, for the first time, the Discrete Typing Unit (DTU) of Trypanosoma cruzi in a volunteer blood donor rejected for being reactive in the northwestern region of Mexico. Seroreactivity was confirmed using "in-house" ELISAs which employed three different antigens: total

Seroprevalence of Antitransglutaminase and Antiendomysium Antibodies in Adult Colombian Blood Bank Donors.

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune enteropathy induced by the ingestion of gluten from wheat, barley, and rye in genetically susceptible individuals. The global prevalence of CD is 1.4%. However, most of the prevalence studies have been conducted in Caucasian populations; few studies have been performed in Latin America. The aim of this study is to determine the seroprevalence of auto-antibodies used as markers for CD in a Colombian cohort. In this cross-sectional study, the serum samples from Colombian donors of the National Red Cross Blood Bank were collected between June and September 201
