Umbilical cord blood collected and cryopreserved at birth contains enough hematopoietic progenitor stem cells for engraftment. HLA identical sibling cord blood transplant has been performed for the first time, in a child with Fanconi anemia. Three years latter, this child is alive with a complete donor type bone marrow. Since this first attempt, several other patients with other diseases have been transplanted successfully. Cord blood banking is a safe and easy procedure. Due to the high proliferative capacity of neonatal hematopoietic progenitors and to the relative immunological functional i

An inquiry amongst blood transfusion services served to establish at 19 the number of known transfusion associated HIV infections in Switzerland. In 12 cases the transfusion of an anti-HIV positive blood unit could be proven retrospectively, while in 7 cases an HIV-infected blood donor could not be found but the association of the infection with blood transfusion is highly probable by exclusion of other risk factors. All these infections occurred before introduction of anti-HIV screening in Switzerland in November 1985. After this date no new transfusion associated HIV infections have been rep

A new donor history questionnaire, introduced by the American Association of Blood Banks in 2004 and approved by Food and Drug Administration in 2006, is now in widespread use in the United States. The development of this questionnaire involved an in-depth look at the entire system of donor screening questions, and is notable for its use of survey design experts as well as blood banking experts, government agencies, and an ethicist who represented the public interest in developing the actual questions. The end result is a questionnaire that uses capture questions in a time bounded format, dono

Cord blood unit (CBU) transplantations to patients mismatched for only 1 HLA antigen, which is identical to the CBU noninherited maternal antigen (NIMA), are designated as having a 6/6 "virtual" NIMA-matched phenotype and have a prognosis similar to 6/6 inherited HLA-matched CBUs. Such virtual HLA phenotypes of CBUs can be created by replacing the inherited alleles with 1 or more NIMAs. Phenotypes of Dutch patients (n = 2020) were matched against the inherited and virtual HLA phenotypes of the National Cord Blood Program CBU file (with known NIMA, n = 6827). Inherited 6/6 matches were found fo

INTRODUCTION: Blood safety is a challenging task in India; with a population of around 1.23 billion and a high prevalence rate of HIV (0.29%), HBV (2-8%) and HCV (≈ 2%) in general population. Nucleic acid testing (NAT) in blood donor screening has been implemented in many developed countries to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted viral infections (TTIs). NAT shortens this window period, thereby offering blood centers a much higher sensitivity for detecting viral infections.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Routine ID-NAT for HIV-1, HCV and HBV was started from June 2010 at AIIMS blood bank by th

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bacterial contamination of platelets stored at room temperature poses the highest risk of infection and fatality. Our hospital-based blood bank performs bacterial culture using the Bactec™ FX system for all whole blood-derived and apheresis units. Approximately 1 mL is collected from each of three to four buffy coat whole blood-derived platelet concentrates (PCs). The pooled sample is then inoculated into a single aerobic paediatric culture bottle. For apheresis units, 3 mL is inoculated per unit. Inoculation is performed at least 12 h after donation or 16-24 h after

Chagas disease is a neglected disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, a public health problem in both endemic and non-endemic countries. In Mexico, the southern region is considered endemic, and cases are frequently reported; however, in the northwestern region, only a few cases are confirmed annually. This study describes, for the first time, the Discrete Typing Unit (DTU) of Trypanosoma cruzi in a volunteer blood donor rejected for being reactive in the northwestern region of Mexico. Seroreactivity was confirmed using "in-house" ELISAs which employed three different antigens: total

BACKGROUND: There is debate whether delayed umbilical cord clamping following delivery, the current gold standard, affects the proportion of cord blood units (CBU) suitable for public cord blood banking. This study was designed to assess the impact of delayed cord clamping on the number of CBU suitable for therapeutic uses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To minimize variability, data from the four most active collection centers within the Programa Concordia (Spain) were included. Data on CBU collected in utero from mothers following normal vaginal deliveries from July 2018 to December 2021 were analy

BACKGROUND: The umbilical cord blood bank at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS-CBB) was established in January 2005. This lead to the development of the UCB transplantation program. Herein, we describe the experience generated during these 13 years.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Donor selection, as well as UCB collection, processing, and banking were performed under good manufacturing practices and standard operating procedures. UCB units were thawed, processed, and released for transplantation based on HLA and nucleated cell content.
RESULTS: From January 2005-December 2017, 1,298

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune enteropathy induced by the ingestion of gluten from wheat, barley, and rye in genetically susceptible individuals. The global prevalence of CD is 1.4%. However, most of the prevalence studies have been conducted in Caucasian populations; few studies have been performed in Latin America. The aim of this study is to determine the seroprevalence of auto-antibodies used as markers for CD in a Colombian cohort. In this cross-sectional study, the serum samples from Colombian donors of the National Red Cross Blood Bank were collected between June and September 201

Understanding the relationships among altruistic health acts may serve to aid therapeutic research advances. In this paper, we report on the links between two such behaviours-donating blood and carrying an organ donor card-and willingness to donate urological tissue to a tissue bank. Reasons for the differential willingness to do so are examined in this paper. A systematic sample of 259 new and returning attendees at a tertiary urology referral clinic in Ireland completed a self-report questionnaire in an outpatient setting. In addition to demographic details, details of known diagnosis of mal

Current Italian regulations allow the free storage in public biobanks within the Italian National Health Service (SSN) of voluntarily donated cord blood, which can then be made available for transplantation in Italian and foreign patients. The same regulations allow the free storage of cord blood for directed use (in other words, for all cases in which it can be used for a family member suffering from a disease that can be cured through the use of hematopoietic stem cells) and in cases where a family runs a high risk of genetic disorders. This article briefly describes and discusses an episode

For an industry to succeed and satisfy its customers, "QUALITY" must be a primary goal. Quality has been central to blood banking from its inception, with the evolution of a Quality Program since the opening of the first blood bank in U.S. at the Cook County Hospital in 1937. Over the ensuing decades, continuous scientific progress in blood preservation, filters, viral and blood group testing, crossmatching, automation, and computerization including bar coding, etc. has contributed to the quality and safety of the blood products and transfusion service. However, with the advent of the AIDS era

We conducted this study to ascertain the usefulness of coagulation studies and blood bank utilization in the patient with symptomatic placenta previa. During a 2-year interval, 97 patients with uterine bleeding due to placenta previa diagnosed > or = 24 weeks' gestation were evaluated. The following studies were routinely obtained: complete blood count including platelet count, fibrinogen, prothrombin time, and a Kleihauer-Betke test. A type and cross-match was sent to the blood bank, and blood availability was maintained for all patients throughout the course of hospitalization. For 92 of 97

The 1973 Comprehensive Blood Bank Survey Program of the College of American Pathologists was administered to 2,200 laboratories and blood banks throughout the United States. The results showed a considerable increase in the accuracy of the testing and in the performance of reagents. Accuracy of ABO testing was 99.3%; Rh testing, 99%; crossmatching was 98.9% correct. Antibody detection was correct 96.3% of the time, with the exception of a cold-reacting anti-P1 which was found by only 62% of the participants. About the same number of laboratories also did not find the antibody during the crossm

BACKGROUND: Remediation of physician learners is not infrequently discussed in the graduate medical education (GME) literature. However, none of this literature is specific to blood banking/transfusion medicine (BB/TM) fellows and their typical 1-year fellowship program. Identifying a fellow's deficiencies and establishing an effective remediation program during a time-limited BB/TM fellowship is challenging.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: GME literature on remediation of physician learners was reviewed. A group of current and former BB/TM fellowship directors convened virtually to discuss if and

BACKGROUND: Reliable national transfusion services require continuous surveillance of donation activity, inventory losses, transfusion-transmissible infection (TTI) screening, and immunohematology workload. Kuwait's centralized service is coordinated by the Kuwait Central Blood Bank (KCBB).
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of officially requested KCBB annual reports (January 2019-December 2023). Collated variables included donation volumes, donor sex and ABO/RhD distribution, discarded components, and NAT screening outcomes for HBV, HCV, and HIV. Patient-side in
