Increased plasma concentrations of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 or PCSK9, which reduces hepatic uptake of low-density lipoprotein by downregulation of the low-density lipoprotein receptor, have been reported in nephrotic patients and might contribute to hyperlipidemia in nephrotic syndrome. Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) induces enzootic bovine leukosis, which is the most common neoplastic disease in cattle. Sero-epidemiological studies show that BLV infection occurs worldwide. Human adult males were exposed to light from blue light emitting diodes (18 lux; 29 microW/cm) and from clear mercury vapor lamps (450 lux; 170 microW/cm) during night-time experimental sessions. Both conditions suppressed nocturnal melatonin concentrations in blood plasma with the blue light more effective than mercury at melatonin suppression. No additive model incorporating opsin photopigments either alone or in combination could explain the results, but a model incorporating an opponent mechanism was consistent with the present data as well as data from previously published studies.

The aim of this work was to study the microbiology of vaginal secretion in 3665 (19 to 72 year old) women investigated in the screening programme for inflammatory and malignant diseases. Maggots, through their excretions and secretions (ES), promote wound healing by removing necrotic tissue, counter bacterial infection, and activate wound associated cells. We investigated the effects of a physiological dose of maggot ES on four wound-associated cell types in vitro with Affymetrix gene expression arrays; keratinocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and monocytes. Keratinocytes showed the fewest (n = 5; p < 0.05, fold-change ±2) and smallest fold-changes (up to 2.32×) in gene expression and conversely THP1 monocytes had the most (n = 233) and greatest magnitude (up to 44.3×).
