Human milk can neutralize Coxsackievirus B4 in vitro.

The role of enteroviruses in type 1 diabetes has long been suspected. A lower risk of type 1 diabetes is associated with breastfeeding, which could be due to a protective effect against enteroviruses. The neutralizing activity of breast milk against CVB4, a representative of enteroviruses was investigated in this study in vitro. Breast milk was cytotoxic to Hep-2 cells up to a dilution of 1/32, whereas the aqueous fraction obtained after centrifugation was not cytotoxic; although it inhibited the cytopathic effect of CVB4 on Hep-2 cell monolayers. The anti-CVB4 neutralizing activity of aqueous

Interventions for treating painful nipples among breastfeeding women.

BACKGROUND: Leading health authorities all recommend exclusive breastfeeding to six months' postpartum. While most women initiate breastfeeding, many discontinue due to difficulties encountered rather than maternal choice. One common breastfeeding difficulty is painful nipples. Research has identified poor infant positioning or latch as a common cause of painful nipples. While many different interventions designed to reduce nipple pain in breastfeeding women have been evaluated, it is unclear which intervention is the most effective treatment. An understanding of nipple pain and treatment opti

Comparative Study of the Use of HPA Lanolin and Breast Milk for Treating Pain Associated with Nipple Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To compare two different treatments-the use of highly purified anhydrous (HPA) lanolin and expressed breast milk-for women with pain and nipple trauma during the breastfeeding process. METHOD: A total of 180 puerperal women were randomly assigned to 2 groups: one was treated with HPA lanolin and the other with their own expressed breast milk. All of the participants received the same breastfeeding technique instructions and therapeutic care standard. Three assessments were performed: at the time of inclusion in the study (after randomization); after 48 hours; and after 7 days. At e

Breast Milk Stem Cells in the Treatment of Neonatal Diseases.

Breast milk plays an important role in preventing and remission various acute and chronic neonatal diseases. However, the mechanisms through which breast milk performs these effects are still unclear. Recently, research has shown that breast milk contains previously undiscovered cells, called breast milk stem cells (BMSCs), which have the potential for multiple differentiation. These cells have been shown to be expressed in multiple organs and systems of infants after ingestion. This study found that newborns who received BMSCs required a shorter treatment duration and had a better prognosis t

A randomised multicentre study of human milk versus formula and later development in preterm infants.

Whether breast milk influences later neurodevelopment has been explored in non-randomised studies, potentially confounded by social and demographic differences between feed groups. Here in a strictly randomised prospective multicentre trial, Bayley psychomotor and mental development indices (PDI and MDI) were assessed at 18 months postterm in survivors of 502 preterm infants assigned to receive, during their early weeks, mature donor breast milk or a preterm formula. These diets were compared as sole enteral feeds or as supplements to the mother's expressed breast milk. No differences in outco

Exome Sequencing of SLC30A2 Identifies Novel Loss- and Gain-of-Function Variants Associated with Breast Cell Dysfunction.

The zinc (Zn) transporter ZnT2 (SLC30A2) is expressed in specialized secretory cells including breast, pancreas and prostate, and imports Zn into mitochondria and vesicles. Mutations in SLC30A2 substantially reduce milk Zn concentration ([Zn]) and cause severe Zn deficiency in exclusively breastfed infants. Recent studies show that ZnT2-null mice have low milk [Zn], in addition to profound defects in mammary gland function during lactation. Here, we used breast milk [Zn] to identify novel non-synonymous ZnT2 variants in a population of lactating women. We also asked whether specific variants i

Usefulness of donor breast sterilization with slightly acidic electrolyzed water to reduce bacterial count in human milk.

BACKGROUND: Human milk banks (HMBs) face challenges in minimizing the disposal of donated human milk (HM). One of the primary reasons for HM disposal in HMBs is samples exceeding the upper limit for the total bacterial count. Pre-expression breast cleaning with tap water is mandated in the guidelines for HMBs as a key hygiene practice for reducing the amount of disposed HM. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of breast cleaning with slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) for reducing HM contamination at the pre-expression stage. METHODS: Twenty-six moth

Progress in epigenetic regulation of milk synthesis, with particular emphasis on mRNA regulation and DNA methylation.

Inadequate milk secretion and a lack of nutrients in humans and mammals are serious problems. It is of great significance to clarify the mechanisms of milk synthesis and treatment methods. Epigenetic modification, represented by RNA methylation, is an important way of gene expression regulation that profoundly affects human gene expression and participates in various physiological and pathological mechanisms. Epigenetic disorders also have an important impact on the production and secretion of milk. This review systematically summarized the research results of epigenetics in the process of lac

Assisted Nursing: A Case Study of an Infant With a Complete Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: This case presents a mother's feeding experience of an infant born with a complete unilateral cleft lip and palate from birth until both were repaired. She fed him directly at the breast with assistance, controlling the delivery of the mother's own milk. The infant received only his mother's own milk, no bottles, and the excess expressed milk was donated to a milk bank. MAIN ISSUE: The Cleft Team supported the mother's wish to breastfeed but expressed realism that cleft lip and palate infants could not create suction. Success had never been observed in the unit. Instead, the team

Dioxins and furans in the mother and possible effects on the fetus and newborn breast-fed baby.

Due to pollution of the environment with PCBs, dioxins and furans these highly poisonous chemicals have accumulated in the adipose tissue of human beings. In breast milk of 14 mothers concentrations of dioxins and furans were found in milk fat, close to or in the range of the concentrations necessary to induce enzymes in "in vitro" rat liver cells (80-132 ppt). The hypothesis is that the above mentioned chemicals can be responsible for a vitamin K deficiency in the babies resulting in a bleeding analogous with phenobarbital. Both the pure TCDD content in milk fat and the content of dioxins and

Humanized UGT1 Mice, Regulation of UGT1A1, and the Role of the Intestinal Tract in Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia and Breast Milk-Induced Jaundice.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and the onset of bilirubin encephalopathy and kernicterus result in part from delayed expression of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) and the ability to metabolize bilirubin. It is generally believed that acute neonatal forms of hyperbilirubinemia develop due to an inability of hepatic UGT1A1 to metabolize efficiently bilirubin for clearance through the hepatobiliary tract. Newly developed mouse models designed to study bilirubin metabolism have led to new insight into the role of the intestinal tract in controlling neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Humanization o

Feeding modalities and the onset of the neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Breast milk has been reported to ameliorate the severity and outcome of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). The mechanism of this beneficial effect of breast milk on NAS remains unclear, as the negligible amount of methadone transmitted via breast milk is unlikely to have an impact on NAS. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of different feeding modalities on the onset of NAS. A retrospective medical record review was conducted on 194 methadone-maintained mother/infant dyads. Infants were categorized on the first 2 days of life as predominantly breastfed, fed expressed human breast

Management of hypernatremic dehydration due to insufficient lactation.

Critical malnutrition and hypernatremic dehydration resulting from inadequate breast-feeding have previously been reported; the finding of elevated sodium concentration in expressed samples of mother's milk from these infants is found concurrently. This is the first case report describing successful relactation following management of hypernatremic dehydration in a breast-fed infant. Mother's milk was of inadequate volume and had a high sodium content. Treatment of the primary cause of this disorder, insufficient lactation, was effective in allowing successful relactation; a nursing supplement

Modulation of miRNAs in Breast Milk via Maternal Diet and Body Composition: a Comprehensive Review.

The initial 1000 days of an infant's life represent a critical period for determining their long-term health outcomes. During this time, breast milk serves as the most distinctive and essential source of nutrition for newborns, providing not only the necessary micronutrients and macronutrients but also a range of bioactive components that greatly influence growth and development. Of particular interest are the microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) present in significant quantities within breast milk. These small noncoding RNAs, ranging from 19 to 24 nucleotides in length, have been shown to play pivotal
