Behavioral problems and emotional stress in children with bruxism.

Bruxism has a multifactorial etiology, and psychosocial factors have been considered to increase the risk of occurrence of this parafunction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior profile of a group of children diagnosed with bruxism. Eighty 7-11-year-old children of both genders (mean age 8.8 years) first recruited as eligible participants. Twenty-nine children (18 males and 11 females) whose parents/guardians reported to present frequent episodes of tooth grinding/clenching while awake or during sleep (at least 3 nights a week) in the previous 3 months were enrolled in the study

Psychopathological profile of patients with different forms of bruxism.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence of psychopathological symptoms in patients who self-reported different forms of bruxism by means of clinical and anamnestic diagnostic criteria. Eighty-five participants were divided into four groups as sleep bruxers (12), awake bruxers (24), sleep-awake bruxers (33), and non-bruxers (16). A self-report symptom inventory questionnaire (Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R)) was filled out by all groups to determine their psychopathological symptoms. As regards mean psychopathological scores, patients with sleep-awake bruxism endorse

Associated conditions and clinical significance of awake bruxism.

BACKGROUND: Awake bruxism is defined as an oral parafunctional activity that includes clenching and grinding of teeth during wakefulness. Confirming the possible related anatomy and the clinical significance of awake bruxism in geriatric hospitals is the aim of this study. METHODS: We analyzed the medical records of 503 patients who were admitted to hospital from April to June 2008. After the recognition of bruxism, the clinical, brain imaging studies and statistical parametric mapping (SPM) of brain single photon emission computed tomography were performed. RESULTS: In each disease group, f

Sleep bruxism in patients with sleep-disordered breathing.

The aim was to test the hypothesis of a direct association between sleep-disordered breathing and sleep bruxism. The frequency of masseter contraction (MC) episodes and rhythmic jaw movements (RJM) was measured in patients with mild and moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The diagnosis of sleep bruxism was made from a combination of questionnaire, clinical observation and all-night polysomnographic recording which included masseter electromyography. A total of 21 patients (19 males/two females, mean age 40.0 years+/-9.2 SD) were randomly selected from a provisional diagnosis of snoring an

[Influence of bruxism during sleep on stomatognathic system].

Nocturnal tooth contact such as bruxism has been considered to be one of the major factors of temporo-mandibular disorders (TMD). However, little information has been reported regarding mandibular movements during bruxing, because of the limitation of the measuring method. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of bruxism on the stomatognathic system. A new device for measuring nocturnal mandibular movements was developed using a PIN photodiode sensor, which was integrated with the polysomnography including both masseter and anterior temporal EMG. The maximum error of the s

Mandibular exercises to control bruxism and deviation problems.

A discussion of bruxism, mandibular deviation and hypermobility problems producing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and masticatory muscle pathology is presented. The pathophysiology of painful masticatory muscle hyperactivity, TMJ dysfunction and chondromalacia are presented. The role that pain mediators play in the degradation of TMJ fibrocartilage, acute synovitis and joint and muscle pain is analyzed. Isokinetic and stretching exercises are described to assist in correcting or preventing pathology and dysfunction of these structures.

Velopharyngeal Insufficiency After Botox Injection for Persistent Bruxism.

Botulinum toxin type-A (BTX-A) injections have emerged as a promising treatment for bruxism and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. However, there is a need for further exploration of optimal dosage, injection techniques, and intervals to maximize treatment effectiveness. Complications, such as velopharyngeal insufficiency, can occur after BTX-A injections, emphasizing the importance of precautionary measures. The utilization of ultrasound guidance and electromyography assistance can aid in precise injections and minimize the risk of complications. In addition, patients should receive app

Interepisode Sleep Bruxism Intervals and Myofascial Face Pain.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep bruxism (SB) is considered as a possible etiological factor for temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain. However, polysomnographic (PSG) studies, which are current "gold standard" diagnostic approach to SB, failed to prove an association between SB and TMD. A possible explanation could be that PSG studies have considered only limited characteristics of SB activity: the number of SB events per hour and, sometimes, the total duration of SB per night. According to the sports sciences literature, lack of adequate rest time between muscle activities leads to muscle overloading

Association between sleep bruxism and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Rhythmic masticatory muscle activity, including sleep bruxism (SB), can be induced in healthy individuals by experimental esophageal acidification, which plays an important role in the pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, no robust evidence supports the association between SB and GERD. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between SB and GERD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-five individuals were eligible to participate in this observational transversal study at the Gastroenterology Service of the Clinical Hospital

The effects of trauma-focused treatment on painful temporomandibular disorders, awake bruxism and sleep bruxism in patients with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Chronic painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD), awake bruxism and sleep bruxism are often comorbid with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the implications for treatment are unknown. OBJECTIVE(S): To explore the effects of PTSD treatment on these conditions. We hypothesized that chronic painful TMD, pain intensity, pain interference, awake bruxism and sleep bruxism would decrease after evidence-based trauma-focused treatment and that this decrease would be maintained at the 6-month follow-up. METHODS: Individuals referred for PTSD treatment were assessed for chronic pa

Bruxism Decoded: A Case Report Revealing the Invisible Signs.

Bruxism is characterized by involuntary movements involving teeth grinding or clenching. It is perceived as a parafunctional activity, and it can lead to instability and various consequences such as dental wear, musculoskeletal pain, masseter hypertrophy, persistent fatigue, and tension headaches. According to the time of occurrence, it can be classified as awake bruxism and/or sleep bruxism. This case report describes a 19-year-old woman, who presented to her family doctor with shoulder pain, headaches, and persistent tiredness despite apparent adequate sleep. She reported no other symptoms a

Bruxism-Related Titanium Miniplate Fracture in the Mandibular Condyle.

Fracture of titanium miniplates after internal fixation of mandibular condylar fractures is rare, accounting for 2.6% of cases in our previous study. A 54-year-old woman presented with a right condylar neck fracture with medial displacement from a fall due to alcohol. Internal fixation was performed with two 4-hole titanium miniplates with nonlocking screws. Postoperative images showed anatomic reduction without deviation. No intermaxillomandibular fixation was performed, and the patient followed a soft diet for 3 weeks. A panoramic radiograph at 5 months postoperatively showed a miniplate fra

Sleep stage dynamics in young patients with sleep bruxism.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that sleep stage dynamics are different in patients with sleep bruxism (SB) and that these changes are associated with the occurrence of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA). METHODS: Fifteen healthy controls and 15 patients with SB underwent overnight polysomnography. Sleep variables and survival curves of continuous runs of each sleep stage were compared between the groups. Stage transition dynamics and the probability of stage fragmentation were analyzed for three epochs before and after the epoch with RMMA. Survival curves of continuous runs of eac
