Cardiometabolic Profiles and Change in Neighborhood Food and Built Environment Among Older Adults: A Natural Experiment.

BACKGROUND: The association between neighborhood environment and health may be biased due to confounding by residential self-selection. The displacement of disaster victims can act as a natural experiment that exposes residents to neighborhood environments they did not select, allowing for the study of neighborhood effects on health. METHODS: We leveraged data from a cohort of older adults 65 years of age or older living in Iwanuma, Japan, located 80 km west of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Surveys were conducted 7 months before the disaster, as well as 2.5 and 5.5 years a

Community built environment factors and mobility around senior wellness centers: the concept of "safe senior zones".

The authors investigated built environment (BE) factors in urban neighborhoods in DeKalb County, Georgia. Each volunteering, consenting senior was placed into one of two groups: walking tours outside, then discussions (n=37); and focus group discussions indoors about photographs of BE conditions potentially influencing mobility (n=43). The authors sought to identify BE factors-both real and perceived by participating seniors-related to their ability to walk around senior wellness centers in a healthy and safe manner. The authors focused specifically on available literature and pilot study data

Environmental and Neighborhood Determinants of Psoriasis: A Systematic Review of Pollution, Built Environment, and Socioeconomic Vulnerability on Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease with well-studied genetic and immunologic drivers. Substantial unexplained variability remains, however, in disease onset, severity, and treatment response. There is evidence that implicates the role of environmental and social determinants in these observed differences in psoriasis. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize the current evidence examining the relationship between external exposures, including air and chemical pollution, the built environment, and neighborhood characteristics, and their impact on psoriasis incidence, sev

Distribution of nematophagous fungi and soil-transmitted helminths in outdoor built environments across Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are among the most common global parasitic infections, represent a significant worldwide public health burden, and remain a source of considerable morbidity in Latin America. Nematophagous fungi (NF), such as Arthrobotrys oligospora, naturally inhabit many soil types and are known for their ability to trap and kill nematodes using specialized hyphal structures or secreted enzymes and metabolites. As they prey on different developmental stages of helminths in soil, they may represent an ecological factor influencing helminth persistence and transmis

Built environment determinants of residents' running activity in Guangzhou, China: what are the nonlinear relationship and pathways?

Although studies have indicated that the built environment (BE) is linked to running activity, they are still uncertain about the nonlinear relationship and mediation effect of BE on this activity in high-density Chinese cities. This study used fitness tracker application, street view, social media text, and other multi-sourced data as bases to establish a framework combining the Shapley Additive exPlanation model, restricted cubic splines, and mediation analysis to address the nonlinearity and interpretability of the relationship between BE and running activity. Results of the empirical analy

Assessing the built environment through photographs and its association with obesity in 21 countries: the PURE Study.

BACKGROUND: The built environment can influence human health, but the available evidence is modest and almost entirely from urban communities in high-income countries. Here we aimed to analyse built environment characteristics and their associations with obesity in urban and rural communities in 21 countries at different development levels participating in the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology (PURE) Study. METHODS: Photographs were acquired with a standardised approach. We used the previously validated Environmental Profile of a Community's Health photo instrument to evaluate photos f

The Association between Changes in Built Environment and Changes in Walking among Older Women in Portland, Oregon.

Some cross-sectional evidence suggests that the objectively measured built environment can encourage walking among older adults. We examined the associations between objectively measured built environment with change in self-reported walking among older women by using data from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF). We evaluated the longitudinal associations between built environment characteristics and walking among 1253 older women (median age = 71 years) in Portland, Oregon using generalized estimating equation models. Built environment characteristics included baseline values and longi

Marginal Effects and Spatial Variations of the Impact of the Built Environment on Taxis' Pollutant Emissions in Chengdu, China.

Understanding the impact of the urban built environment on taxis' emissions is crucial for sustainable transportation. However, the marginal effects and spatial heterogeneity of this impact is worth noting. To this end, we calculated the taxis' emissions on weekdays and weekends in Chengdu, China, and investigated the impact of the built environment on taxis' emissions by applying multi-source data and several spatial regression models. The results showed that the taxis' daily emissions on weekdays were higher than the emissions on weekends. The time heterogeneity of hourly taxis' emissions wa

The experience of outdoor physical activity for skin cancer survivors: understanding the importance of the built and natural environments.

PURPOSE: Cancer patients are encouraged to do more physical activity (PA). Exercising in outdoor settings, however, may expose people to UV radiation, which is the main risk factor of melanoma. This study aimed to understand how melanoma diagnoses affect people's perception of the outdoor environment for PA. METHOD: In-depth interviews were conducted among 19 individuals (20-85 years) with a history of melanoma at a skin cancer clinic in the Denver metropolitan area. Transcribed interviews were coded for emergent themes. The coding framework included topics related to PA behavior, sun protect

The occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes is associated with built environment microbiota in three tree fruit processing facilities.

BACKGROUND: Multistate foodborne disease outbreaks and recalls of apples and apple products contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes demonstrate the need for improved pathogen control in the apple supply chain. Apple processing facilities have been identified in the past as potential sources of persisting L. monocytogenes contamination. In this study, we sought to understand the composition of microbiota in built apple and other tree fruit processing environments and its association with the occurrence of the foodborne pathogen L. monocytogenes. RESULTS: Analysis of 117 samples collected from

Optimizing mobility in later life: the role of the urban built environment for older adults aging in place.

Hazards in the urban built environment can create barriers to mobility among older adults aging in place. We investigated the relationship between urban built environment characteristics and 15-month trajectories of mobility disability in a sample of 1,188 older adults living in Detroit, MI, a city that has undergone rapid economic and structural decline. Data come from the Michigan Minimum Data Set for Home Care (2001-2008), an enumerative database of older adults in Michigan who qualify for federal or state-funded home and community-based long-term care through a Medicaid waiver program. Built environment and the evolution of cardiometabolic risk factors: a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic risk (CMR) is a monotonic if not linear continuum where, over time, incremental rises in biological risk can herald large increases in absolute disease risk and thus incident cardiometabolic disease (CMD). The built environment (BE)-green/open space, walkability, and food environment-may influence biological risk. Assessing the biological plausibility and temporal direction of such associations by linking BE features to the progression of biological indicators of CMR is essential for stronger causal inference. This review summarised longitudinal studies assessing BE

Community perspectives on the built environment, community stress, and the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in Accra, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The growing burden of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases in Africa demands greater understanding of the contextual drivers of risk factors, including the built environment. Cognitive Mapping (CM) is a participatory research approach that allows community members to visualise their environmental context through drawing. The maps express in visual form the situated knowledge of the environment from local perceptions of daily experiences. This study combines Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and qualitative research methods to explore community perspectives on t
