Continuous epidural morphine/butorphanol infusion following selective dorsal rhizotomy in children.

The authors prospectively evaluated 15 patients who had undergone selective dorsal rhizotomy who were given a continuous morphine/butorphanol infusion, to determine whether variations in the postoperative pain control and side effects seen using a bolus technique could be reduced. Patients had an epidural catheter placed at the end of the operative procedure through which 50-60 micrograms/kg preservative-free morphine and 15-20 micrograms/kg butorphanol was administered. A continuous epidural infusion of 5 micrograms/kg h morphine and 1.2 micrograms/kg h butorphanol was then initiated. Postope

Target-controlled infusions of butorphanol worsen hemodynamics in isoflurane-anesthetized cats.

INTRODUCTION: Partial intravenous anesthesia can be used to reduce the adverse effects of inhalant anesthetics, and opioids are often used in this context in dogs and cats. The opioid butorphanol was recently shown to dose-dependently reduce the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane in cats. The aim of this study was to characterize the hemodynamic effects of butorphanol in isoflurane-anesthetized cats. METHODS: Six cats were anesthetized with isoflurane and administered butorphanol to maintain target plasma concentrations (TPCs) of 0, 1.1, 2.2 and 4.4 μg mL-1, with or without concurre

Butorphanol Tartrate Nasal Spray for Post-Cesarean Analgesia and Prolactin Secretion.

BACKGROUND Butorphanol, an opioid receptor agonist and antagonist, is widely used for post-cesarean section analgesia in the form of intravenous or intramuscular injection, but nasal sprays are less used. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic effect of butorphanol nasal spray on uterine contraction pain after cesarean section and explore its effect on postpartum prolactin secretion. MATERIAL AND METHODS We randomly divided 120 patients scheduled for cesarean section into 3 groups (40 per group): intranasal saline (control), butorphanol intranasal (BI), and butorphanol pumped intravenously

Ketamine-butorphanol-medetomidine for the immobilisation of free-living hyenas (Crocuta crocuta).

Free-ranging spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are immobilised for a variety of purposes, including wildlife-human conflict mitigation, research, and veterinary treatment. Combinations of tiletamine-zolazepam (Zoletil) and medetomidine are commonly used for immobilisation of hyenas, however, recovery times are long. In this descriptive study, a total of 20 adult or subadult free-ranging hyenas were immobilised near Skukuza in the Kruger National Park using ketamine, butorphanol, and medetomidine. The goal of the study was to evaluate a suitable dose and measure cardiorespiratory effects of this

Effects of sedation with midazolam and butorphanol on resistive and pulsatility indices in healthy dogs.

Resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) are indirect measurements of blood flow resistance that may be measured by pulsed wave Doppler ultrasonography. Chemical restrain may potentially alter the indices although it is required to perform ultrasonography in some patients. The purpose of this study was to describe values for both intrarenal and ocular RI and PI within the same subject in clinically normal dogs sedated with a midazolam and butorphanol combination and evaluate if there are any significant changes between sedated and nonsedated dogs. Fifteen healthy Beagle dogs were studie
