Local cerebral blood volume in head-injured patients. Determination by emission computed tomography of 99mTc-labeled red cells.

Local cerebral blood volume (CBV) was mapped in 10 normal subjects and in 30 patients after head injury. In normal subjects, the mean CBV was 4.34 ml/100 gm. The coefficient of variation was 12% for the group mean, and 3% for values obtained in duplicate studies of individuals. Patients with head injuries were divided into three groups according to the stage of their illness: acute illness, early recovery, and later recovery. Averages of mean CBV were within one standard deviation of normal. In contrast, consistent changes were found in serial studies of the mean CBV in the same patient. Compa

Incidence of and Risk Factors for Loss of 1 Blood Volume During Spinal Fusion Surgery in Patients With Cerebral Palsy.

BACKGROUND: Spinal fusion surgery is associated with greater blood loss in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) than in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Risk factors for loss of 1 blood volume (LOBV) in patients with CP have not been well studied. We investigated the incidence of and risk factors for LOBV during spinal fusion surgery in young patients with CP. METHODS: We queried a multicenter registry of CP patients for all patients 21 years or younger who had undergone spinal fusion from 2008 through 2013; 272 patients met these criteria. We analyzed data on patient characteristi

Dynamics of cerebral blood volume during and after middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats - Comparison between ultrafast ultrasound and dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced MRI measurements.

Tomographic perfusion imaging techniques are integral to translational stroke research paradigms that advance our understanding of the disease. Functional ultrasound (fUS) is an emerging technique that informs on cerebral blood volume (CBV) through ultrasensitive Doppler and flow velocity (CBFv) through ultrafast localization microscopy. It is not known how experimental results compare with a classical CBV-probing technique such as dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced perfusion MRI (DSC-MRI). To that end, we assessed hemodynamics based on uUS (n = 6) or DSC-MRI (n = 7) before, during and u

Prognostic Value of the Cerebral Blood Volume Index After Successful Recanalization in Acute Ischemic Stroke with Large Vessel Occlusion.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO) remain at risk of hemorrhagic transformation (HT) and poor functional outcomes despite successful reperfusion after endovascular therapy (EVT). We assessed the association of the cerebral blood volume (CBV) index with HT and 90-day functional outcomes in patients who achieved successful recanalization. METHODS: This retrospective study included AIS-LVO patients who underwent EVT from November 2020 to June 2024. The CBV index was calculated as the ratio of the average CBV within the delayed pe

Cerebral Blood Volume Within 6 Hours of Birth in Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Assessed Using Time-Resolved Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of the cerebral blood volume (CBV) within 6 hours of birth (early CBV) on the prognosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated whether the early CBV, measured using time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy (tNIRS), is an early predictor of adverse outcomes in neonates with HIE. STUDY DESIGN: This single-center retrospective study included neonates diagnosed with any grade of HIE between 2017 and 2024. Therapeutic hypothermia was initiated in neonates with moderate or severe HIE, but not in those with mild HIE. Early CBV was m

The relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) < 42% is independently associated with hemorrhagic transformation in anterior circulation large vessel occlusion.

BackgroundPretreatment CT perfusion (CTP) marker relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) < 42% lesion volume has recently shown to predict poor collateral status and poor 90-day functional outcome. However, there is a paucity of studies assessing its association with hemorrhagic transformation (HT). Here, we aim to assess the relationship between rCBV < 42% lesion volume with HT.MethodsIn this retrospective study, we included patients with acute ischemic stroke secondary to large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO) of anterior circulation who had successful recanalization from two comprehensive stroke ce

Time-course analysis of cerebral circulation and cardiorespiratory responses to acute central blood volume reduction in healthy young males.

Central blood volume (CBV) reduction challenges circulatory and respiratory homeostasis, particularly during the initial compensatory phase (0-2 min), when rapid physiological adaptations occur. In this study, we examined dynamic cardiorespiratory responses to CBV reduction using lower-body negative pressure (LBNP) in 11 healthy young males. Participants completed three standardized 2 min LBNP trials at -45 mmHg, with respiratory variables assessed via flow measurement and breath-by-breath gas analysis, while cardiovascular parameters and cerebral blood flow were monitored using ECG, blood pre

Analysis of prefrontal cerebral blood volume and flow changes in ESKD patients undergoing hemodialysis using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis experience diverse neurological complications. This study investigated prefrontal cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) during hemodialysis using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to analyze cerebral hemodynamic changes. METHODS: ESKD patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis without a history of neurological disorders were enrolled prospectively. The fNIRS data were collected using a NIRSIT Lite device. The fNIRS values were recorded three times for each patient: before the start o

Incongruous effect of phenylephrine on changes in cerebral blood volume measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) indicating extracranial contamination.

We assessed extracranial contamination of the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) signal during administration of phenylephrine. The study was performed with NIRO 200NX which employs both the Modified Beer-Lambert (MBL) method to measure total hemoglobin (tHb, expressed in µM), and Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy (SRS) to measure total hemoglobin content (nTHI, expressed in arbitrary units (a.u.)). SRS tends to not be affected by extracranial blood flow. As vasoconstriction with phenylephrine mainly occurs in the extracranial area, we hypothesized that if NIRS measurements are indeed prone to ex

Simultaneous measurement of cerebral hemoglobin oxygen saturation and blood volume in asphyxiated neonates by near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) usually results in a poor clinical outcome even when treated with hypothermic therapy (HT). Early postnatal changes in cerebral blood oxygenation and hemodynamics may be critical determinants of brain injury and the efficacy of HT. OBJECTIVES: We measured cerebral hemoglobin oxygen saturation (ScO2) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) by near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS) in HT-treated and non-HT-treated neonatal HIE patients to assess the influence of these parameters on clinical outcome. METHODS: We retrospectively compared ScO2, CB

Suitable image parameters and analytical method for quantitatively measuring cerebral blood flow volume with phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging.

The aim of this study was to determine suitable image parameters and an analytical method for phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) as a means of measuring cerebral blood flow volume. This was done by constructing an experimental model and applying the results to a clinical application. The experimental model was constructed from the aorta of a bull and circulating isotonic saline. The image parameters of PC-MRI (repetition time, flip angle, matrix, velocity rate encoding, and the use of square pixels) were studied with percent flow volume (the ratio of actual flow volume to measu

The Relative Cerebral Blood Volume (rCBV) < 42% Is Independently Associated with Collateral Status in Anterior Circulation Large Vessel Occlusion.

Background: The pretreatment CT perfusion (CTP) marker the relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) < 42% lesion volume has recently been shown to predict 90-day functional outcomes; however, studies assessing correlations of the rCBV < 42% lesion volume with other outcomes remain sparse. Here, we aim to assess the relationship between the rCBV < 42% lesion volume and the reference standard digital subtraction angiography (DSA)-derived American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology/Society of Interventional Radiology (ASITN) collateral score, hereby referred as the DSA CS. Clinical significance of assessing cerebral blood volume by time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy in children with congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite providing cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (StO2 ), the lack of quantitative information for continuous wave near-infrared spectroscopy (CW-NIRS) is an obstacle in evaluating cerebral hemodynamic conditions. Time-domain NIRS (TD-NIRS) provides both StO2 and cerebral blood volume and has recently become clinically available. AIM: To investigate if the additional monitoring of cerebral blood volume by TD-NIRS facilitates the understanding of cerebral hemodynamic conditions in patients with congenital heart disease. METHODS: Preoperative TD-NIRS values were retrospectively

Blood flow velocity using transcranial Doppler velocimetry in the middle and anterior cerebral arteries: correlation with sample volume depth.

The baseline transcranial Doppler studies of the middle (MCA) and anterior cerebral (ACA) arteries of 135 patients were retrospectively reviewed. 3312 data points were classified according to gender, vessel, mean blood flow velocity (MBFV), systolic blood flow velocity (SBFV), diastolic blood flow velocity (DBFV) and sample volume depth (SVD). The flow velocities at each depth were averaged, and plotted against acquisition depth. The male MCA yielded a correlation coefficient (r), between MBFV and SVD of 0.999. For the female MCA, r = 0.986. For the ACA, male, r = 0.911, and female, r = 0.894.

Determination of rat cerebral cortical blood volume changes by capillary mean transit time analysis during hypoxia, hypercapnia and hyperventilation.

Changes in cerebral blood volume due to augmented or diminished numbers of blood-perfused capillaries can be studied in small animals by optical methods. Capillary mean transit time was determined by detection of the passage of a hemodilution bolus through a region of the parietal cerebral cortical surface, using a reflectance spectrophotometer through a small craniotomy in chloral hydrate-anesthetized rats. Local cerebral blood flow was determined in the same region by the butanol indicator-fractionation method. Blood volume was calculated from the product of blood flow and transit time. Norm
