An epidermoid inclusion cyst is basically an epidermoid cyst resulting from the traumatic implantation of epidermal elements into the dermis with their subsequent cystic transformation. A case of an epidermal inclusion cyst of the cheek region is described in a 54-year-old man, whose feature was rather unusual, in that it presented as a fixed, indurated, inflamed, and sometimes, mimicking a parotid gland infection. The cyst was particularly persistent and recurred within a month of its medical treatment and had to be re-excised along with the adjacent parotid mass.

Recurrent cheek biting, a form of self-injurious behavior is a rare entity which presents mostly to dentists and dermatologists. We report a case of recurrent severe cheek biting in an adult male leading to mucosal ulceration. The stereotypic pattern of cheek biting and associated behavior bears striking resemblance to other impulse control disorders.

Histological measurements of dimensions of primary, regular secondary and irregular secondary dentine, pulp diameter and assessment of the levels of predentine, resting lines and enlarged areas of intertubular dentine were performed in apically infected mandibular and maxillary cheek teeth (CT). These examinations showed significantly reduced regular and irregular secondary dentine thickness in diseased as compared to control CT, with 21/26 infected maxillary CT and 15/18 infected mandibular CT having reduced regular secondary dentine (varying between 27.4% and 89.1% reduced secondary dentine

As an example of the use of quantitation in histological diagnosis the features of normal human cheek mucosa (NHCM) and non-ulcerative lichen planus of the cheek mucosa (LPCM) have been systematically studied and quantified in order to establish normal and pathological features which are constant. The technique enabled the quantitative verification of previously held concepts relating to NHCM and LPCM. A number of interesting features which have been given little attention in past literature were also noted. It is proposed that a reliable quantifiable range of characteristic histological featu

Basaloid neoplasms of the head and neck region pose a specific challenge both for clinicians and pathologists. It is a diverse group of neoplasms that include benign as well as malignant entities. These neoplasms can arise from various head and neck subsites such as skin, salivary gland, and sinonasal tract. Cytological diagnosis of these tumors is extremely difficult due to morphological overlap with other biphasic tumors and within the basaloid group itself. Here, we are presenting a case of basaloid neoplasm which turned out to be a basal cell adenocarcinoma of the left parotid gland on pos

Equine dental diseases are often underdiagnosed and their signs inadequately reported. Many horse owners have difficulties in recognizing pain-related behavioral signs and in associating them with dental pain. Our objective was to determine what type and degree of dental findings may cause behavioral signs associated with dental pain. In this cross-sectional study, dental examination was performed on 183 adult horses and cheek tooth findings were scored. Owners filled in an internet-based questionnaire including 35 questions concerning eating behavior, bit behavior, and general behavior of the

The traditional rhytidectomy addresses facial and neck aging as it relates to soft tissue laxity. The modern volumetric facelift provides optimal results by addressing not only skin laxity but also the loss of volume secondary to tissue atrophy and bony resorption. While multiple techniques including fat grafting, dermal fillers, and tissue resuspension are used to correct the tissue loss, alloplastic midface augmentation remains the most permanent method. In our practice we often address midface cheek hollowness or atrophy with the placement of submalar implants at the time of rhytidectomy. I

Hemangioma is the most common benign tumor of a vascular origin, and is characterized by the abnormal proliferation of blood vessels. Intramuscular hemangioma (IMH) usually involves the skeletal muscles of the trunk or limbs, but rarely occurs in the head and neck region. This case report presents a patient with IMH showing multiple phleboliths in the buccal cheek. A 13-year-old boy was referred for the evaluation and management of painful swelling of the left cheek that had gradually increased in size over a 6 year duration. The examination revealed a palpable firm mass. Reddish-blue buccal m

Meningioma is well known as common disease of the central nervous system, whereas primary extracranial meningioma is rare, representing 1% to 2% of all meningiomas. We have experienced a case of primary extracranial meningioma presenting as a right cheek mass. The tumor was completely excised via a right lateral rhinotomy incision. Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of primary extracranial meningioma.

Cheek mucosa cancer might surround Stensen meatus requiring preservation and relocation of the duct. Sialodochoplasty is necessary to avoid subsequent stricture, cheek swelling, and obstructive sequelae that could make following oncologic follow-up difficult. We report a simple successful technique of parotid duct cannulation and relocation in a 77-year-old woman who underwent cheek mucosa tumor resection for squamous cell carcinoma and free fasciocutaneous forearm reconstruction. Ability of milk clear saliva from the duct orifice after 6 weeks from surgery was assessed clinically, and no fist

The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). Eight embalmed cadavers were analyzed: one side of the face was macroscopically dissected; on the other side, full-thickness samples of the parotid, zygomatic, nasolabial fold and buccal regions were taken. In all specimens, a laminar connective tissue layer (SMAS) bounding two different fibroadipose connective layers was identified. The superficial fibroadipose layer presented vertically oriented fibrous septa, connecting the dermis with the superficial aspect of the SMAS. In the d

Na+ transport activity was measured in cheek cells from untreated hypertensive subjects and age-matched normotensive controls identified from a blood pressure screening program. Cheek cells were isolated by a simple mouth wash procedure and Na+ transport activity was measured as the proton-dependent uptake of 22Na+ using a rapid filtration assay. The rate of Na+ uptake was about 45% lower in hypertensive subjects and this difference persisted in a follow up study 2 years later involving those subjects who remained untreated for their hypertension. The proton independent Na+ uptake was also red

Fifty-one consecutive patients with clinical findings and history consistent with pityriasis rosea underwent a complete oral examination to search for any concomitant oral lesions. One case was omitted from the statistical analysis because the results of a rapid plasma reagin test were positive. Of the fifty remaining cases, eight patients (16 percent) were noted to have various oral lesions, all of which were asymptomatic. These findings suggest that the actual incidence of oral lesions in pityriasis rosea may be higher than previously reported. A complete oral examination in a patient presen

The term sialosis was introduced by Rauch (1956) and was associated with a symmetrical, painless, recurrent enlargement of the salivary glands. Included among the sialoses were non-inflammatory and inflammatory diseases of the salivary glands. A more recent definition still in use today was made by Seifert (1960) and includes disturbances in metabolism and secretion of the parotid gland. The term sialosis was also recommended by the World Health Organization (Thackray and Sobin, 1972) to replace the descriptive term "asymptomatic salivary enlargement." In addition to inflammatory diseases and

Solitary fibrous tumor (STF) is a mesenchymal tumor that mainly appears in the pleura. Its presence in the oral cavity is very uncommon, being the buccal mucosa the most frequent location. Imaging cannot distinguish this entity between other types of tumors, being histological and immunohistochemical studies essential for its diagnosis. Immunohistochemical stains typically show positive results for CD34, Bcl2, and CD99. Surgical removal with wide margins is the gold standard treatment, requiring a close follow up due to recurrence risk. We present a case report of a solitary fibrous tumor loca

A paranasal sinus mucocele is an epithelial-lined, mucus-containing sac that completely fills the sinus and forms an expandable cystic structure. It most commonly affects the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses, and rarely the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. Orbital displacement or external disfigurement resulting from the expansion of the frontal or ethmoid sinuses is common; however, facial asymmetry caused by maxillary bone remodeling is rare. We describe a case of large maxillary sinus mucocele that destroyed the maxillary sinus bony wall, resulting in notable left cheek swelling and disfigureme

BACKGROUND: Most head and neck melanomas occur on the face, with the cheek being the most frequently affected site. So far, small numbers of researches on cheek melanomas have yielded insufficient and controversial results. In this trial, we aimed to define the histopathological and clinical features specific to cheek melanomas and to compare them with other head and neck melanomas by using a large group of patients from a single tertiary center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 98 cheek melanomas and 183 other (noncheek) head and neck melanoma cases were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: T

BACKGROUND: Dental pulp inflammation is a very complex process due to its situation in low compliance (confined environment) surrounded by mineralized dentin. Mast cells are one of the mediators of inflammation. Immunohistochemical localization of mast cells by anti-tryptase antibodies in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections has been shown to be highly specific. The aim of the present study is to quantify the mast cells in inflamed and noninflamed human pulp tissue using immunohistochemical analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical localization of mast cells by anti-tryptase a
