Garcin syndrome is characterized by an unilateral cranial nerves involvement without sensory or motor long-tract disturbances. It is usually caused by tumor infiltrating in the skull base with osteolytic changes on radiological study. We report a case of 64-year-old man with history of alcohol overintake, who admitted local hospital, because of right periorbital edema and facial swelling. He noted right ptosis 2 weeks prior to admission. Neurological examination revealed right multiple cranial nerves involvement including II, III, IV, V, and VI cranial nerves. MR imaging of the brain showed ma

The jugular foramen (JF) region is a complex area of the cranial base where venous structures such as the jugular bulb and the inferior petrosal sinuses are strictly related to the lower cranial nerves IX, X and XI. The most common tumours include glomus jugulare, schwannomas of the mixed cranial nerves (IX-XI) and meningiomas. Schwannomas involving the jugular foramen are rare neoplasms and in most of the cases are thought to originate from the X cranial nerve. We report a case of a schwannoma of the JF diagnosed at an early stage, allowing radiological and surgical evidence to support its or

(1) Background: Among the four paranasal sinuses, the frontal sinus is in the frontal bone. Recent research trends have been focusing on identifying sex based on the frontal sinus. Thus, this study aimed to provide reference data for the frontal sinus in Korean adults by comparing their sizes using a 3D program. Moreover, this study examined the correlation between the size of the frontal sinus and the length of cranial bone. (2) Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data were obtained from 60 (male 30, female 30) patients in their 20 s who visited the Department of Dankook University

INTRODUCTION: The nose is responsible for humidification, heating and cleaning of the inhaled air. The sneeze reflex leads to a shock-like cleaning of the nose in strong particle exposure. The aim of this study was the simulation of intranasal air flow of sneezing in a realistic computer model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the CT scan of a 40 year old man a three-dimensional computer model of the nasal cavity and the ethmoid sinuses was created. Flow simulations were performed for different inspiratory and expiratory velocities (± 2 m/s to ± 45 m/s) in order to simulate sneezing. RESULTS w

Pneumocephalus is occasionally encountered in horses but poorly described in the literature. The study aimed to describe historical, clinical and diagnostic imaging findings and outcome in horses to increase the awareness and recognition of the condition amongst equine practitioners, allowing appropriate management of these cases. Cases of pneumocephalus from 4 participating institutions were identified and case details extracted from the medical records. Five cases of pneumocephalus were identified. Head trauma with suspected or confirmed fractures of the sinuses was the underlying cause in 4

The frontal sinuses are cavities inside the frontal bone located at the junction between the face and the cranial vault and close to the brain. Despite a long history of study, understanding of their origin and variation through evolution is limited. This work compares most hominin species' holotypes and other key individuals with extant hominids. It provides a unique and valuable perspective of the variation in sinuses position, shape, and dimensions based on a simple and reproducible methodology. We also observed a covariation between the size and shape of the sinuses and the underlying fron

Specific anomalies of the skull in eight family members affected with Saethre-Chotzen syndrome were documented by cephalometric analysis of standardized skull radiographs. The most severe deviations included reduced length and abnormal position of the posterior cranial base, low position of the sella turcica, reduced mandibular ramus length, steep mandibular plane angle, and, in adults, reduced facial depth. A feature of the syndrome may be the absence or reduced size of cranial sinuses.

Anatomical variations of the frontal sinuses that may play a role in the correlation between frontal sinusitis and orbital complications are described. There were used 18 cadavers during routine educational cadaver dissections, one month after theirs withdrawal from the formol basin. The dissections of the cranial cavity and the orbits were performed so as to reveal the frontal sinuses. An unusual bilateral posterior extension of the frontal sinus mucosa was found in two of the cadavers. The projection of the mucosa was covering half of the orbital roof in a 60 year old male and one third of t

A 58 year old male with a history of prostate adenocarcinoma presented with diplopia, severe headaches, and eye pain, consistent with sinusitis. Imaging was concerning for invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) and an urgent ENT consultation was requested. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed revealing metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma to the sinuses and anterior cranial fossa. The distinctive imaging features in this case are very useful when considering the divergent management options of IFS and metastatic sinus disease. These entities are likely to be encountered more frequently as immunomodul

INTRODUCTION: Although encephalocele is a rare congenital abnormality, secondary encephalocele is extremely rare and can cause fatal complications. Here, we report a case of secondary encephalocele caused by frontal sinus wall defect due to chronic sinusitis, which was completely removed by cranialization with autologous bone graft. A 50-year-old man with a 10-year history of chronic sinusitis visited our hospital due to suddenly altered mentality characterized by stupor. Computerized tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enlarged left frontal sinus with sinusitis. The

Chronic idiopathic hyperphosphatasia (CIH) is a rare generalised skeletal dysplasia in childhood. The clinical, radiographic and cerebral MR findings in a 5-year-old girl with the severe infantile form of CIH are reported. In spite of cranial enlargement, the intracranial space and the skull base were markedly reduced, the whole brain was compressed and a Chiari I malformation was present. Normal flow in the dural venous sinuses was documented. The patient showed no detectable cranial nerve involvement or hydrocephalus. Cranial MR in this patient enabled us to confirm that CIH involves the sku

BACKGROUND: Anterior skull base lesions could be reached by different approaches (subfrontal, pterional, interhemispheric, etc.). In selected cases, the frontal trans-sinusal approach is an effective alternative to conventional techniques.
METHODS: We present our technique to perform a frontal trans-sinusal approach in a patient affected by a large olfactory groove meningioma.
DISCUSSION-CONCLUSION: The frontal trans-sinusal approach allows to approach safely lesions of the median anterior cranial fossa. This approach provides lower brain retraction, easier access to olfactory grooves, and e

Sinonasal and temporal bone infections may extend to the skull, skull base, meninges, pericerebral spaces, brain parenchyma, dural sinuses, deep cerebral or cortical veins, intracranial arteries and cranial nerves either via contiguous or hematogeneous spread. The site of infection dictates the sites of potential complications: orbital with ethmoid sinusitis, cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis and oculomotor palsies with sphenoid sinusitis, transverse sinus thrombophlebitis with mastoiditis and superior sagittal sinus thrombophlebitis with frontal sinusitis. All may result in brain abscess. Cong

Of 60 cases of dural arteriovenous malformations (DAVM) explored and treated in the Vascular Neuroradiology Unit of the Hospital of Bicêtre between 1980 and 1986, 3 presented in an extrasinusal location: intraorbital, middle cerebral fossa and the region of the superior orbital fissure. We have not found any prior description of DAVMs in these regions in the literature. The classic concept that DAVMs arise in direct relationship with the dural sinuses is limited. We believe that these lesions may also develop in relationship with the venous drainage system of the sinuses and the venous drainag

After recalling the main anatomical characteristics of the frontal sinuses, the authors describe the frontal craniotomy surgical procedure and its variants. A bicoronal skin incision is performed. An inferior-based pericranial flap is created, with its limits situated away from the osteotomies. Osteotomies are performed with an oscillating saw. The inferior osteotomy is horizontal, tangentially following the supraorbital margin as far as the lateral limit of each sinus. The osteotomy is continued medially as far as the nasion, passing an average of 3mm above the floor of the medial part of the

We describe a case of hemitrophy in a 12-year-old child presenting with seizures, hemiplegia and mental retardation. Hemiatrophy of one cerebral hemisphere is not frequently encountered in clinical practice. When this develops early in life (during the first two years), certain cranial changes like ipsilateral hypertrophy of the skull and sinuses occur. Asymmetry of cerebral hemispheric growth with atrophy on one side, ipsilateral osseous hypertrophy and hyper-pneumatization of sinuses with contralateral paresis are features of Dyke Davidoff Masson Syndrome (DDMS). Probably vascular occlusion

Mucocoeles of the paranasal sinuses are relatively uncommon and rarely bilateral, the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses being most commonly affected. Rarely, fronto-ethmoidal mucocoeles expand and extend into the anterior cranial fossa producing mass effect. We report a 66-year-old woman, who presented with a 20-year history of recurrent bilateral progressive proptosis and supra orbital swellings with blindness in the left eye. Ultrasound scan of the left eye showed a large cystic mass in the orbit due to extension of ipsilateral frontal mucocoele. Computed tomographic brain scan showed large bila

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to investigate the dynamics of intracranial pressure (ICP) alterations and bilateral transverse-sigmoid sinus morphologies in patients with venous pulsatile tinnitus (PT).
METHODS: This retrospective study involved 27 patients with venous PT associated with sigmoid sinus wall anomalies. ICP and ICP metrics were measured by cerebrospinal fluid manometry and internal jugular vein compression tests. Correlation analysis was performed to determine the statistical correlation between ICP and the morphological metrics.
RESULTS: The mean ICP was 212.5 ± 47.3 mmH2

OBJECTIVE: Venous pulsatile tinnitus (PT) has received increasing attention recently. As analyses of psychophysical and neuropsychological dimensions of venous PT are lacking, this study aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the correlation among audiometric, hydroacoustic, and subjective outcomes in patients with PT.
METHODS: Fifty-five venous PT patients, with or without sigmoid sinus wall anomalies (SSWAs), were subdivided into SSWAs (n = 30) and non-SSWAs (n = 25) groups. Audiometric and hemodynamic evaluations were assessed. Questionnaires including the Tinnitus Handicap
