From Care to Coercion: Service User and Carer Experiences of Police-Involved Mental Health Crisis Responses.

Police and specialised police teams are frequently called to respond to mental health crises, often becoming de facto gatekeepers to care. Yet the perspectives of people in crisis and their carers remain underrepresented in the literature. The aim of this review is to explore the lived experiences of people, including carers, who encounter police or specialised police teams during a mental health crisis. A narrative review was conducted following Sukhera's five-step approach. Searches across CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, and Sociological Abstracts identified 33 qualitative studies from eight coun

Quantifying CAHOOTS: Measuring a mobile crisis response program's impact on police response through call diversion and prevention.

Mobile Crisis Response Programs (MCRPs) have emerged as alternatives to police for emergency mental and behavioral health calls, yet their effectiveness in diverting calls from police remains contested. CAHOOTS (Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets), the United States' longest-running MCRP, has been subject to widely varying ad hoc diversion rate estimates, from 3 to 20%. We use a systematic difference-in-differences design to estimate the causal effects of CAHOOTS on police call volume by introducing three estimators. The Substitution Diversion Rate (SDR) quantifies MCRP responses tha

Is Brief Admission Effective for Individuals With Lived Experience of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) When Experiencing Crisis? A Mixed Systematic Review.

Brief admission has been widely used to support individuals with lived experience of borderline personality disorder (BPD) who are experiencing crisis. This study updates a previous 2014 systematic review of the effectiveness of brief admission for individuals with BPD. Following PRISMA guidelines, four databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO and Cochrane library) were searched from 2011. Two independent reviewers screened titles and abstracts followed by full texts against predefined inclusion criteria. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Due to heterogenei

Critical incident stress debriefing (CISD): its role in the Armed Services--a personal opinion.

The controlled application of CISD in the Armed Services is of value. In a varied Army career covering service with both regular and specialist units, there are instances where in retrospect the opportunity to discuss an incident in a CISD environment or the receipt of a general health warning would have been welcomed and assisted the group (or the individual) concerned to return to operational effectiveness. Practical considerations aside a colleague and friend who has been closely involved with CISD in the Forces since its inception, cites a very good case for its defence. In the early 1990s

Just do something: An experimental investigation of brief interventions for reducing the negative impact of post-event processing in social anxiety disorder.

Post-Event Processing (PEP) is prevalent and problematic in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) but is typically not a direct target in evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for SAD. The primary aim of the current study was to examine the impact of several theoretically and empirically derived interventions for PEP in SAD, including concrete thinking, abstract thinking, and distraction in comparison to a control (i.e., do nothing) condition. Based on prior research, we hypothesized that the concrete and distract conditions would be associated with positive benefits, i

Rape Crisis Counseling: Trauma Contagion and Supervision.

This study of rape crisis counselors considers whether increased exposure to victims' trauma is associated with increased supervision-believed necessary to combat trauma contagion-and whether such supervision will reduce the negative impact of such exposure. One hundred six women counselors in seven of nine rape crisis centers in Israel completed anonymous questionnaires documenting their work and trauma exposure. Trauma exposure was defined by counselors' number of victim-contact hours per week and their assessment of the trauma severity they experienced. Supervision was measured by the numbe

Effectiveness of current policing-related mental health interventions: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There are three commonly used mental health interventions associated with policing: liaison and diversion, street triage and having specialist staff embedded in police contact control rooms. Crisis intervention teams (CITs), already used in the USA, are now attracting wider interest, including in the UK. Investment in these interventions is growing, so it is important to have evidence of their effectiveness. AIM: To conduct a systematic literature review to answer questions about effectiveness of police-mental health service models for responding to people with mental disorder and

Objectives. To assess the specificity of Medicaid policy guidance for mobile crisis teams across all 50 US states and the District of Columbia. Methods. We conducted a national policy mapping study (August-November 2024), reviewing publicly available Medicaid documents, including state plan amendments, waivers, provider manuals, and billing guidance. We extracted 53 policy features and grouped them into 15 domains. Domains included mobile crisis team-specific billing codes, age-inclusive eligibility, licensed provider requirements, and follow-up or documentation expectations, as well as define

Effectiveness of fixed landline crisis phone boxes in preventing suicides: Evidence from Australia and the United States.

AIMS: Fixed phone boxes enabling calls to a suicide crisis line have been established at a number of public sites where suicides occur. However, the evidence for the effectiveness of this intervention on suicide deaths is not well established. This study examined the effectiveness of fixed phone boxes by comparing suicide rates during the pre-intervention and post-intervention periods. METHODS: Using suicide mortality data from three sites in Australia and three sites in the United States, Poisson regression models were used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence interval

Care giving and receiving for people with complex emotional needs within a crisis resolution/home treatment setting: A qualitative evidence synthesis.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: The term 'complex emotional needs' (CEN) is used here to describe people with difficulties and needs that are often associated with the diagnostic label of 'personality disorder'. People with CEN might use out of hours services such as emergency departments and Crisis Resolution/Home Treatment (CRHT) teams more often when experiencing a mental health crisis. Very little is understood about the experiences of both those receiving, and those delivering care, for people with CEN within CRHT settings. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: There are differences

A randomized pilot trial of brief family-involved treatment for alcohol use disorder: Treatment engagement and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Involving family members in a patient's treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) leads to more positive outcomes, but evidence-based family-involved treatments have not been adopted widely in AUD treatment programs. Study aims the following: (a) modify an empirically supported 12-session AUD treatment, alcohol behavioral couple therapy (ABCT) to make it shorter and appropriate for any concerned family member and (b) conduct a small clinical trial to obtain feasibility data and effect size estimates of treatment efficacy. METHOD: ABCT content was adapted to three-sessions following

Phycological debriefing in acute traumatic events: Evidence synthesis.

Stressful life situations can generate chronic symptomatology, so it is of great concern to analyze preventive strategies. Psychological debriefing is an intervention for acute trauma, which verbalizes perceptions, thoughts, and emotions experienced during a recent traumatic event. The evidence surrounding its efficacy is controversial. This article discusses the efficacy of psychological debriefing based on systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines. In all, nine systematic reviews were included. Only one of them found that psychological debriefing effectively decreased psychological

Effectiveness of nurse-delivered screening and brief alcohol intervention in the workplace: A randomized controlled trial at five Japan-based companies.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol use is a leading cause of global morbidity and premature mortality. This study evaluated the effectiveness of two types of nurse-delivered interventions to reduce excessive alcohol consumption among screened participants using the alcohol use disorders identification test (AUDIT) in the workplace. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial involving AUDIT-positive employees of five Japan-based companies was conducted. A total of 351 participants were randomized into groups that received a patient information leaflet (PIL), 5 min of brief advice, or 15 min of brief ad

HealthCall: A randomized trial assessing a smartphone enhancement of brief interventions to reduce heavy drinking in HIV care.

INTRODUCTION: Heavy drinking among people living with HIV (PLWH) worsens their health outcomes and disrupts their HIV care. Although brief interventions to reduce heavy drinking in primary care are effective, more extensive intervention may be needed in PLWH with moderate-to-severe alcohol use disorder. Lengthy interventions are not feasible in most HIV primary care settings, and patients seldom follow referrals to outside treatment. Utilizing visual and video features of smartphone technology, we developed the "HealthCall" app to provide continued engagement after brief intervention, reduce d
