Impaired facial emotion recognition in early-onset right mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Anteromedial temporal lobe regions, particularly the amygdala, participate in the recognition of emotions from facial expressions. The authors studied the ability of facial emotion recognition (ER) in subjects with symptomatic epilepsy, evaluating whether mesial temporal lobe damage is related to an impairment in the recognition of specific emotions and whether the onset of seizures in a critical period of life could prevent the development of ER. METHODS: Groups included patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with MRI evidence of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) (n = 33); pati

Chronicity factors of temporomandibular disorders: a critical review of the literature.

Facial pain often persists long after any identifiable organic pathology has healed. Moreover, in a subgroup of patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), no treatment is effective. Knowledge of factors associated with persistent pain in TMD could help identify personalized treatment approaches. Therefore, we conducted a critical review of the literature for the period from January 2000 to December 2013 to identify factors related to TMD development and persistence. The literature findings showed that chronic TMD is marked by psychological distress (somatization and depression, affective

Depletion of microglia in developing cortical circuits reveals its critical role in glutamatergic synapse development, functional connectivity, and critical period plasticity.

Microglia populate the early developing brain and mediate pruning of the central synapses. Yet, little is known on their functional significance in shaping the developing cortical circuits. We hypothesize that the developing cortical circuits require microglia for proper circuit maturation and connectivity, and as such, ablation of microglia during the cortical critical period may result in a long-lasting circuit abnormality. We administered PLX3397, a colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor inhibitor, to mice starting at postnatal day 14 and through P28, which depletes >75% of microglia in the v

Effect of intracortical vascular endothelial growth factor infusion and blockade during the critical period in the rat visual cortex.

VEGF is the major angiogenic and vascular permeability factor in health and disease. Vascular development depends on function, and in sensory areas is experience-dependent. Our aim was to investigate, qualitatively and quantitatively, the effects of intracortical infusion and neutralisation of VEGF during the first days of the critical visual period, when peak levels of endogenous VEGF secretion are reached. VEGF was intracortically delivered into middle cortical layers of P18 Long-Evans rats. Another cohort received anti-VEGF. Vehicle (PBS)-infused and non-operated animals were used as contro

Fearlessness, stimulation-seeking, and large body size at age 3 years as early predispositions to childhood aggression at age 11 years.

BACKGROUND: Previous cross-sectional research in Western societies has linked adolescent stimulation-seeking, fearlessness, and body size to antisocial behavior. However, it is unclear how early in life these factors exert their influence, and nothing is known about their specificity to aggressive behavior per se. This study tests the hypotheses that stimulation-seeking, fearlessness, and increased body size at age 3 years predict aggression at age 11 years. METHODS: Behavioral measures of stimulation-seeking and fearlessness, together with height and weight, were measured at age 3 years and

Epidemiology of suicide attempts and deaths: a population-based study in Fars, Iran (2011-16).

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a critical psychological issue worldwide with an increasing trend. This study investigated suicide comprehensively. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we reviewed data of 28 552 suicide attempts during 2011-16, in Southern Iran. To calculate age-standardized incidence rates, population statistics were derived from the Statistical Center of Iran and the National Organization for Civil Registration. We used the standard population of World Health Organization 2012 to adjust the suicide attempts and deaths rates by age. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 26.8

Characteristics of pain, psychological burden, substance use, and stigma after traumatic orthopedic injury.

BACKGROUND: The period following orthopedic trauma is a critical window for developing psychological burden, prolonged opioid use, and opioid-related stigma. Stigma refers to shame or perceived judgment related to opioid use, which may impair postoperative pain management and patient-provider trust. Although stigma is increasingly recognized as a recovery barrier, its relationship to pain, psychological factors, and opioid use duration remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To characterize patterns of psychological factors, substance use, concerning opioid use (opioid misuse), and stigma by op

Cerebral plasticity: Windows of opportunity in the developing brain.

BACKGROUND: Neuroplasticity refers to the inherently dynamic biological capacity of the central nervous system (CNS) to undergo maturation, change structurally and functionally in response to experience and to adapt following injury. This malleability is achieved by modulating subsets of genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms that influence the dynamics of synaptic connections and neural circuitry formation culminating in gain or loss of behavior or function. Neuroplasticity in the healthy developing brain exhibits a heterochronus cortex-specific developmental profile and is heightened dur

Development of reaching in infancy.

The development of reaching for stationary objects was studied longitudinally in 12 human infants: 5 from the time of reach onset to 5 months of age, 5 from 6 to 20 months of age, and 2 from reach onset to 20 months of age. We used linear mixed-effects statistical modeling and found a gradual slowing of reach speed and a more rapid decrease of movement jerk with increasing age. The elbow was essentially locked during early reaching, but was prominently used by 6 months. Differences between infants were distributed normally and no evidence of different types of reachers was found. The current w

Timing of the critical period for plasticity of ocular dominance columns in macaque striate cortex.

Visual deprivation induced by monocular eyelid suture, a laboratory model for congenital cataract, results in shrinkage of ocular dominance columns serving the closed eye. We performed monocular suture in macaques at ages 1, 3, 5, 7, and 12 weeks to define the critical period for plasticity of ocular dominance columns. After a minimum survival of 8 months, complete montages of [3H]proline-labeled columns were reconstructed from flat-mounts of striate cortex in both hemispheres. In any given monkey, visual deprivation induced the columns throughout striate cortex (V1) to retract the same distan

Clinical and psychosocial impact of limited mobility during the interstage period of two-stage revision arthroplasty for prosthetic joint infection: a state-of-the-art review.

BACKGROUND: Two-stage revision arthroplasty remains the gold-standard treatment in the United States for patients diagnosed with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the hip and knee. However, during treatment, patients have an extended interstage period between prosthesis removal and reimplantation which is frequently characterized by substantial reductions in mobility, prolonged rehabilitation, and a high incidence of medical and psychosocial complications. This review examines the physical, psychological, and social effects of immobility during the interstage period. METHODS: A comprehe

Breathing Exercises for Improving Cognitive Function in Patients with Stroke.

Patients with stroke may experience a certain degree of cognitive decline during the period of recovery, and a considerable number of such patients have been reported to show permanent cognitive damage. Therefore, the period of recovery and rehabilitation following stroke is critical for rapid cognitive functional improvements. As dysfunctional breathing has been reported as one of the factors affecting the quality of life post stroke, a number of studies have focused on the need for improving the breathing function in these patients. Numerous breathing exercises have been reported to enhance

Comparative analysis of hippocampal volume and stress levels between medical and non-medical undergraduate female students.

The neuroplasticity theoretical framework posits that alterations in synaptic connectivity and function within the brain serve as the foundational basis for learning and a broad spectrum of other cognitive outcomes. This framework emphasizes the role of synaptic plasticity as critical for the encoding and retrieval of information and for the adaptation of behavior in response to environmental stimuli. The Kessler psychological distress scale (K10) was administered to assess stress and anxiety levels in 20 medical and 20 non-medical female students during their exam period. Following the questi
