Review of the Adverse Effects Associated with Dermal Filler Treatments: Part I Nodules, Granuloma, and Migration.

The increase in the use of filler treatments within minimally invasive cosmetic surgery has correspondingly escalated the variety and frequency of associated side effects. Initially, unregulated procedures led to primary side effects such as infections, foreign body reactions, and granuloma formation. However, severe vascular complications like skin and tissue necrosis and blindness have emerged as recognized risks. Side effects from filler treatments can range from mild to life-threatening, including edema, pain, tenderness, numbness, bleeding, bruising, hematoma, redness, erythema, pigmentat

Improving Provider Competency to Enhance Safety in Dermal Filler Procedures: A QSEN and Benner-Guided Program.

Aesthetic nursing has rapidly expanded without standardized training to ensure provider competency, increasing the potential for adverse events (AEs). While most dermal filler AEs are minor, serious complications including vascular compromise, can occur. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce dermal filler AEs by implementing an evidence-based competency assessment program for aesthetic providers using the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) framework and Benner's Novice to Expert model. Our objective was to improve patient safety by decreasing dermal filler AEs through st

Chronic Facial Abscess Mimicking Cervicofacial Actinomyces From Dermal Filler Migration: Case Report.

Dermal fillers are commonly used for facial augmentation, but delayed complications such as granulomatous inflammation and filler migration can mimic chronic bacterial infections, such as cervicofacial actinomycosis, and lead to diagnostic misdirection. We present the case of a woman aged 56 years with a chronic, draining abscess on the right cheek that persisted for 3 years and was initially suspected to represent cervicofacial actinomycosis. Tissue cultures were negative, and histopathologic analysis following excisional biopsy revealed polymethyl methacrylate microspheres and hyaluronic aci

Hypersensitivity reaction to Hyaluronic Acid Dermal filler following novel Coronavirus infection - a case report.

The incidence of hypersensitivity reactions to hyaluronic acid dermal fillers is between 0.3 and 4.25%, mediated by T-lymphocytes. Flu-like illness can trigger immunogenic reactions at the site of filler placement. Cases of SARS-CoV-2 are significant and pose a possible risk of inducing hypersensitivity. This case report is of a delayed-type hypersensitivity after hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatment of the nose and subsequent infection with SARS-CoV-2. Risk factors for the development of such symptoms were identified as the presence of hyaluronic acid combined with flu-like illness and rep

A Systematic Review on the Effectiveness and Safety of Combining Biostimulators with Botulinum Toxin, Dermal Fillers, and Energy-Based Devices.

INTRODUCTION: Aesthetic medicine has evolved towards minimally invasive procedures, with biostimulators like Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA), and Polycaprolactone (PCL) gaining attention for their role in collagen induction, improving skin texture, elasticity, and volume. Combining these agents with other treatments-such as botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, and energy-based devices (e.g. laser and radiofrequency therapies)-is hypothesised to provide enhanced aesthetic outcomes. However, studies on the efficacy and safety of these combinations remain sparse and methodol
