[Findings on dermatomycoses observed at the Dermatologic Clinic, University of Pavia. A third pathology caused by Trichophyton rubrum].

From 1974 to 1988 T. rubrum have been isolated in 304 cases (27.8% of dermatophytes) in the Department of Dermatology in Pavia and it is the second most frequent fungus after M. canis. Males are more frequently affected (61.1%) than females (38.9%). A single localization was found in 82.2% of the cases and two or more types of "Tineae" only in 17.8%. The age-group 31-40 is more frequently affected (29%). The most frequent dermatophytosis caused by T. rubrum was Tinea pedis (33.9%) while Tinea capitis resulted a very rare localization (2.1%). An increase of T. rubrum infections is noted particu

Clinical efficacy and tolerability of terbinafine (Lamisil)--a new topical and systemic fungicidal drug for treatment of dermatomycoses.

Terbinafine (Lamisil) is the newest compound within a class of antimycotic drugs called allylamines. It is active against a broad range of dermatophytes and yeasts and exerts its fungicidal action by inhibiting squalene epoxidation during sterol synthesis in fungal membranes. Effective therapy (complete cure or mycological cure with minimal signs and symptoms) has been observed in 70-90% of 1200 patients treated topically with 1% cream for tinea corporis/cruris, tinea pedis, cutaneous candidiasis and pityriasis versicolor. Cure in patients treated systemically (125 mg b.i.d. orally) has been d

A double-blind, randomized comparative trial: flutrimazole 1% solution versus bifonazole 1% solution once daily in dermatomycoses.

In a double-blind, randomized study the efficacy and tolerance of flutrimazole 1% solution were compared with bifonazole 1% solution, applied once daily for 4 weeks, in 40 patients with culturally proven dermatophytosis or cutaneous candidosis. Forty patients with mycologically proven pityriasis versicolor were treated with once-daily application for 1 week. The four groups of patients and distribution of target lesions were similar, although in the flutrimazole group more patients had cutaneous candidosis (n = 8 versus n = 1). The distribution of the sum of clinical scores was also similar in

Isoconazole nitrate: a unique broad-spectrum antimicrobial azole effective in the treatment of dermatomycoses, both as monotherapy and in combination with corticosteroids.

Fungal skin infections, or dermatomycoses, are associated with a broad range of pathogens. Involvement of gram-positive bacteria is often suspected in dermatomycoses. Inflammation plays an important role in dermatomycoses, displaying a close association between frequent inflammation and reduced skin-related quality of life. Isoconazole nitrate (ISN) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent with a highly effective antimycotic and gram-positive antibacterial activity, a rapid rate of absorption and low systemic exposure potential. ISN is effective against pathogens involved in dermatomycoses, wit

[Dermatomycosis--classification, etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment].

Dermatomycoses are common diseases in dermatological clinics. An epidemiological survey in Japan revealed that dermatophytosis was the most prevalent cutaneous fungal infection (89.1%), followed by candidiasis (8.4%) and the Malassezia infections(2.4%). Among dermatophytoses, tinea pedis was the most frequent, then in decreasing order, tinea unguium, tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea manuum, and tinea capitis including kerion. Among all dermatophyte infections, Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated. Among cutaneous candidiasis, intertrigo was the most frequent clinical form, f

Clinical evaluation of the DermatoPlex qPCR assay for the detection of dermatophyte fungi and Candida spp.

PURPOSE: Dermatomycoses represent the most frequent form of human fungal infection globally. The conventional diagnostic approach to identify dermatomycoses is based on direct microscopic examination (DME) and fungal culture. However, these procedures suffer from a number of significant limitations. We aim to evaluate the clinical performance of the novel DermatoPlex qPCR assay (SpeeDx) in comparison to conventional methods for the detection of dermatophyte fungi and Candida spp. in skin and nail material. METHODS: Between February and July 2024, 1320 samples from 1252 patients were collected

Epidemiology and fungal species distribution of superficial mycoses in Northeast Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: Dermatomycoses are superficial fungal infections which affect the skin, hair and nails of humans and animals. Male and female patients of all ages are affected by this condition. The main etiological agents of dermatomycoses are the dermatophytes fungi of the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton, while the main yeasts belong to the genera Candida, Malassezia and Trichosporon. The variation in the distribution of dermatomycoses worldwide justify the conduction of epidemiological studies in order to contribute for the better understanding of patterns of mycological cuta

Prevalence and determinants of vitamin D deficiency in Iranian children and adolescents: the CASPIAN-V study.

Inflammatory flare-up reactions of some dermatomycoses, particularly those caused by zoophilic fungi, are typical and potentially severe adverse effects following the intake of some oral antifungals. However, this condition has not previously been reported with the most frequently used antifungals in dermatology, namely fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine. In this report, we describe five patients, observed over a 10-year period, who presented with inflammatory exacerbations following oral antifungal therapy for dermatomycoses. We also review the literature on inflammatory reactions exa

Reactive oxygen species and the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of isoconazole nitrate.

Bacterial superinfections often occur in dermatomycoses, resulting in greatly inflamed or eczematous skin. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of isoconazole nitrate (ISN), a broad-spectrum antimicrobial imidazole, commonly used to treat dermatomycoses. Several gram-positive bacteria minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for ISN (ISN solution or ISN-containing creams: Travogen or corticosteroid-containing Travocort) and ampicillin were obtained using the broth-dilution method. Speed of onset of the bactericidal effect was determined with bacterial killing
