Voxel based analyses of diffusion tensor imaging in Fabry disease.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease (FD) is a lysosomal storage disorder associated with marked cerebrovascular disease. Conventional MRI shows an extensive load of white matter lesions (WMLs) which may already be present at an early stage in the disease. OBJECTIVE: Investigator independent and sensitive quantification of structural changes in the brain in clinically affected men and women with FD. METHODS: We performed a voxel based analysis of diffusion tensor images (DTI) in 25 patients with FD and 20 age matched normal controls. RESULTS: DTI revealed significant increases in cerebral white matter

Diffusion tensor imaging in infants with basal ganglia-thalamic lesions.

We performed diffusion tensor imaging in two infants with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. MRI revealed basal ganglia-thalamic lesions in both patients during the neonatal period. Patient 1 had severe neurological sequelae, whereas patient 2 achieved normal development. Conventional MRI at 12 months of age showed abnormal high-intensity areas in bilateral basal ganglia and thalami in patient 1, whereas no abnormal intensities were recognized in patient 2. Diffusion tensor tractography demonstrated poor depiction of white matter tracts above the level of centrum semiovale in patient 1.

Analysis of acute traumatic axonal injury using diffusion tensor imaging.

Traumatic axonal injury (TAI) contributes significantly to mortality and morbidity following traumatic brain injury (TBI), but is poorly characterized by conventional imaging techniques. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) may provide better detection as well as insights into the mechanisms of white matter injury. DTI data from 33 patients with moderate-to-severe TBI, acquired at a median of 32 h postinjury, were compared with data from 28 age-matched controls. The global burden of whole brain white matter injury (GB(WMI)) was quantified by measuring the proportion of voxels that lay below a critic

Semilobar holoprosencephaly seen with diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tracking.

A neonate with semilobar holoprosencephaly was studied with diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tracking. Fiber tracking showed that the frontooccipital fasciculi were in continuity across the ventral midline, interposed between fused caudate and dysplastic fornices. Tractography of the posterior limbs of the internal capsules showed fibers arching ventrally toward the expected location of the motor cortex; some fibers also coursed dorsally, presumably to the sensory cortex. There was a posterior commissural white matter bundle representing a callosal splenium. Diffusion tensor imaging and fibe

Diffusion tensor imaging after COVID-19 infection: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Most COVID-19 neuroimaging research focuses on clinically evident lesions occurring during the acute period after infection. Chronic effects on brain structure, especially at a microstructural level, are less well defined. Existing advanced neuroimaging studies report inconsistent differences in white matter integrity after COVID-19 infection. Our aim was to systematically evaluate the advanced neuroimaging literature with a specific focus on examining diffusion MRI (dMRI) abnormalities observable after the resolution of the acute phase of COVID-19 illness. METHODS: A search of th

An analysis of diffusion tensor imaging in classical trigeminal neuralgia.

BackgroundDiffusion tensor imaging (DTI) may demonstrate microstructural changes in diseased trigeminal nerves. Few prognostic indicators for long-term pain freedom after microvascular decompression (MVD) of the trigeminal nerve have been identified. The present study aimed to determine whether microstructural changes from DTI are present in the trigeminal nerve of patients with classical trigeminal neuralgia (cTN) due to arterial compression or deformation and whether they may be used to predict surgical success.MethodsPatients with a diagnosis of cTN due to arterial compression or deformatio

Pontine tegmental cap dysplasia: the role of diffusion tensor imaging.

Pontine tegmental cap dysplasia (PTCD) is a rare hindbrain malformation syndrome. Recurrent aspiration pneumonia is a major cause of death during a first year of life. We report the case of month-old child with an inability to suck milk since birth and multiple convulsions. PTCD was identified using tractography and MRI. This case report describes the imaging findings, the role of diffusion tensor imaging in PTCD and its differentiating features from Joubert syndrome and related disorders (JSRDs). The constellation of imaging features in PTCD includes a midbrain appearance resembling a molar t

Tensor-valued diffusion magnetic resonance imaging in a radiotherapy setting.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diagnostic information about cell density variations and microscopic tissue anisotropy can be gained from tensor-valued diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These properties of tissue microstructure have the potential to become novel imaging biomarkers for radiotherapy response. However, tensor-valued diffusion encoding is more demanding than conventional encoding, and its compatibility with MR scanners that are dedicated to radiotherapy has not been established. Thus, our aim was to investigate the feasibility of tensor-valued diffusion MRI with radiotherapy ded

Diffusion Tensor Imaging of the Knee to Predict Childhood Growth.

Background Accurate and precise methods to predict growth remain lacking. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) depicts the columnar structure of the physis and metaphyseal spongiosa and provides measures of tract volume and length that may help predict growth. Purpose To validate physeal DTI metrics as predictors of height velocity (1-year height gain from time of MRI examination) and total height gain (height gain from time of MRI examination until growth stops) and compare the prediction accuracy with bone age-based models. Materials and Methods Femoral DTI studies (b values = 0 and 600 sec/mm2; d

Diffusion tensor imaging: A biomarker of outcome in Krabbe's disease.

Krabbe's disease is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal disorder resulting from deficiency of β-galactocerebrosidase that affects primarily cerebral white matter and peripheral nerves. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is sensitive to changes in white matter myelination, but its assessment is based purely on qualitative, visual inspection, and it is subject to interobserver variability and open to reader bias. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an advanced MRI technique that provides quantitative information about the microscopic structural organization of the white matter and chan

Utility of diffusion tensor imaging parameters for diagnosis of hemimegalencephaly.

BACKGROUND: Hemimegalencephaly is a rare hamartomatous entity characterised by enlargement of all or part of the cerebral hemisphere ipsilaterally with cortical dysgenesis, large lateral ventricle and white matter hypertrophy with or without advanced myelination. Although conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful for detecting these diagnostic features, hemimegalencephaly is not always easily distinguished from other entities, especially when hemimegalencephaly shows blurring between the grey and white matter. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a functional MRI technique commonly

Diffusion tensor imaging in Alzheimer disease and mild cognitive impairment.

A wide range of imaging studies provides growing support for the potential role of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in evaluating microstructural white matter integrity in Alzheimer disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Our review aims to present DTI principles, post-processing and analysis frameworks and to report the results of particular studies. The distribution of AD-related white matter abnormalities is widely discussed in the light of deteriorated connectivity within certain tracts due to secondary white matter degeneration; primary alterations are also assumed to contribute t

Diffusion tensor imaging: a review for pediatric researchers and clinicians.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging technique that allows for the visualization and characterization of the white matter tracts of the brain in vivo. DTI does not assess white matter directly. Rather, it capitalizes on the fact that diffusion is isotropic (equal in all directions) in cerebral spinal fluid and cell bodies but anisotropic (greater in one direction than the other directions) in axons that comprise white matter. It provides quantitative information about the degree and direction of water diffusion within individual units of volume within the magnetic res
