Exposure to war-related trauma and post-migration discrimination are significant risk factors for mental health problems among refugees and migrants. Understanding the mechanisms linking these experiences to psychological outcomes is essential for informing targeted interventions in host countries. In the context of resettlement, this study examined whether perceptions of injustice and physiological stress regulation, measured through resting heart rate variability (HRV), mediated the relationship between trauma, perceived discrimination, and mental health problems. Data were collected from 98

Significant health disparities exist for transgender female (trans*female) youth. We assessed differences in mental health outcomes based on exposure to discrimination among transgender female youth in the San Francisco Bay Area aged 16-24 years. Youth were recruited using a combination of respondent driven sampling with online and social media methods. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios for the mental health outcomes, comparing levels of discrimination and levels of resiliency promoting protective factors among sexually active youth in the sample (N = 216). High tran

Sexual minority people report higher rates of discrimination than heterosexuals, and this discrimination may interfere with people's experiences of healthcare services. Drawing from the Generations dataset, a national probability dataset of 1244 sexual minority people, we explore how experiences of discrimination across contexts are associated with expectations of discrimination within health care via health care stereotype threat (HCST) and attribution of discrimination, and whether these patterns vary across cisgender sexual minority subgroups. Results suggest everyday discrimination is posi

BACKGROUND: Forcibly displaced people represent a highly resilient population, but research has predominantly focused on risk factors that render them more vulnerable to mental health difficulties, such as traumatic experiences and post-migration stress. While previous studies have reported potential protective factors such as resilience and religiosity, little is known about their actual impact on risk factors.
AIMS: This research examines the interplay between potential protective factors (resilience and religiosity), post-migration stress (post-migration living difficulties and perceived d

The paper examines Yashica Dutt's Coming Out as Dalit through the framework of Trauma theory, highlighting the emotional and psychological consequences of hiding one's Dalit identity in a rigidly hierarchical society. This study offers a thorough analysis of the psychological pain caused by caste-based discrimination and the lasting impacts of social marginalisation. It underscores how caste discrimination engenders internalised fear, humiliation, and identity disintegration, resulting in persistent psychological distress. This paper examines how Dutt's young teenager experiences of concealing

Background: Black transgender women experience high rates of intersectional discrimination contributing to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. While sleep typically buffers psychological distress among general populations, these relationships remain underexplored among Black transgender women, and existing protective sleep literature derives primarily from non-Hispanic White, cisgender, socioeconomically advantaged populations. Methods: This exploratory secondary cross-sectional analysis of 155 Black transgender women (aged 18+) examined whether sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Qual

This study investigated the potential for recreational gamblers to respond as if certain types of losing slot machine outcomes were actually closer to a win than others (termed the near-miss effect). Exposure to conditional discrimination training and testing disrupted this effect for 10 of the 16 participants. These 10 participants demonstrated high percentages of conditional discrimination testing performance, and the remaining 6 participants failed the discrimination tests. The implications for a verbally based behavioral explanation of gambling are presented.

The abuse of volatile solvents may be due to their ability to produce an intoxication similar to that produced by classical central nervous system depressants such as the barbiturates and ethanol. To evaluate this hypothesis, mice were trained to discriminate pentobarbital from saline injections in a two-lever operant task. Stimulus generalization was examined following 20-min inhalation exposures to toluene (300-5400 ppm). In 8 of 10 subjects, pentobarbital-lever responding occurred following toluene exposure indicating an overlap in the discriminative stimulus properties of toluene and pento

This study used network analysis to explore core features of meaning in life (MIL) among young and middle-aged people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and to examine its relationships with social support, psychological capital, and perceived discrimination. A total of 472 PLWHA completed the Chinese Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Social Support Rating Scale, Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Berger HIV Stigma Scale. Network analysis identified a mixed network with 20 nodes and 82 non-zero edges. "My life has a clear sense of purpose" showed the highest expected influence and emerge

OBJECTIVE: This study explored profiles of online risk-taking, exposure to online racial discrimination, and their associations with college adjustment and health risks among Black and Latine students.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A geographically diverse sample of 571 Black (54.1%) and Latine (45.9%) students (39.9% cisgender women; M = 20.38 SD = 1.57) self-reported on positive online risk-taking (anti-racism risk-taking and coping with racism), negative online risk-taking (antisocial behaviors and problematic internet use), online racial discrimination, three domains of college adjustment (ed

Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people have more risk of suffering from violence and situations of discrimination than heterosexual people. The current study compares LGB people with heterosexual people in protective factors, violence, health and well-being factors. The sample comprises 609 Spanish people between 14 and 25 years old. We established a cross-sectional design. A survey including questions about sociodemographic information and protective, violence and health and well-being factors was designed ad hoc for this study. The results show that the LGB group (n = 342) is more at risk of

Using 10-day daily diary data collected in 2019 from 10th grade students in southern U.S. (N = 161, 57% Latina/x/o, 21% Biracial, 10% Asian, 9% White, 4% Black; 55% female, Mage = 15.51), this study examined various forms of peer-based discrimination in adolescents' everyday lives. Results showed that personally experienced discrimination, peer racial teasing, and vicarious discrimination were frequent and impactful events. Results also provided strong evidence for the protective role of psychological resilience and some evidence for the protective-reactive roles of peer support and school cl

In the current study, we examined the precursors and consequences of discrimination for 876 Latino, African American, and Asian American adolescents (Mage = 16.9 years, SD = 0.43). The race/ethnic characteristics of schools and neighborhoods influenced adolescents' perceptions of the race/ethnic climates of these contexts. In turn, adolescents who viewed climates more negatively were more likely to perceive discriminatory treatment by school personnel, peers, and societal institutions. Discrimination from these 3 sources exerted differential influence on developmental outcomes: Greater discrim

Background: Exposure to racial and ethnic discrimination (RED) is positively associated with alcohol-related outcomes among Hispanics; however, links between RED and alcohol use are poorly understood, particularly when considering RED in social media. Objectives: Study aimed to (1) examine the direct and indirect associations between RED on social media and alcohol use severity (i.e., AUDIT total score) via coping drinking motives (a form of negative reinforcement in which an individual uses alcohol to alleviate/regulate negative emotions) among Hispanic emerging adult college students, and (2)

Mice have rarely been used for drug discrimination research. A procedure is described for training mice to discriminate sodium pentobarbital (PB) from vehicle and the pharmacological specificity of the PB stimulus was assessed by generalization testing with methohexital, ethanol, chlorpromazine and morphine. Mice were trained to discriminate PB from vehicle using a two-lever procedure with responding maintained under a fixed-ratio 20 schedule of milk presentation. Training was initiated with 10 mg/kg PB or saline given i.p. 20 min prior to the sessions, and stimulus control was assessed every

Both discrimination and sexual health disparities have significant negative health implications for Latina/o preadolescent youth, including negative mental health outcomes, STIs/HIV, unintended pregnancy, and ongoing poverty. Studying these links within this population, therefore, has significant public health relevance, both in terms of promoting sexual health in general as well as serving the specific needs of Latina/o youth. This study explored the relationship between perceived discrimination, peer influence and sexual behaviors among 438 Mexican American preadolescents in the Southwest Un

BACKGROUND: Previous research has linked discrimination to poorer health. Yet health risk behaviours such as heavy alcohol consumption are often targeted with stigmatising public health campaigns. The current study sought to establish the link between experiencing discrimination and health outcomes among heavy drinkers, with a focus on exploring the multiple social identity processes that might underpin this relationship.
METHODS: A survey was conducted with 282 people who self-reported consuming alcohol above recommended guidelines. We measured discrimination experienced as a drinker, compon
